Thames Foreshore – Walk and Talk

Walk - Friday 16th December at 11amStarting at The Founders Arms Public House

Join Dr Fiona Haughey to find out about the history of Bankside’s fascinating foreshore

Talk - Friday 20th January at 6pmAt The Community Space, 18 Great Guildford Street, SE1.

Fiona will explain further about the history of the foreshore, and therewill be a chance to discuss ways to protect the river for future generations.

Why the Thames Foreshore is important? The foreshore of the Thames at Bankside has evidence of 10,000 years of human presence in what isnow central London. It is very rich in the material culture of prehistoric people as well the historicphases of the past two millennia. The Thames is a very fragile resource and all of this is under threatfrom both natural and human causes.

The results of flooding in the Upper Thames valley, the building of the many bridges and piers, thenarrowing of the river by embanking and quays, and the damage inflicted by the wash from vessels andextraneous digging on the foreshore all take a continuous toll. The latest ‘threat’ is from the proposedRiver Park from Blackfriars to the Tower. Having worked in the area since 1995, and being a founder ofthe Bankside STEWards, Dr Fiona Haughey is seeking the help of local residents and businesses whowant to know more about this amazing resource, are interested in learning more about what it contains, and keen to be involved in helping preserve it for future generations to join her at two events she ishosting.

Both events, the walk on the December 16th, or the talk and discussion on January 20th, are greatopportunities to learn more about the foreshore - where history is literally beneath your feet!

Bankside STEWards is a network of local residents and business contacts committed to caring for andpromoting the past, present and future of the archaeology and environment of the Thames foreshorebetween Blackfriars and London Bridges at Bankside.
