Our summer issue featured a story about young adults fightingcancer, focusing on two incredible women from palm beach County, eileen Velez-Vega and Krista tuthill-Forde. I am very sorry to reportthe sad news that Krista’s difficult journey with melanoma ended onJuly 7, 2012.

I spoke with Krista about two weeks before her passing. At the time, she was still undergoing treatment. We spoke of many things – herdiscovery of the cancer whilepregnant, her struggles withthe disease, and the incrediblesupport she got from herfamily. She was so grateful toher loved ones for being therefor her and for giving her hope.that’s part of what was soamazing about her – she nevergave up hope. At the time, Ihad no idea that would be mylast time speaking to her. All Iknew was that after theconversation, I couldn’t get heror her words out of my mind. She inadvertently gave me some adviceon this strange, wonderful journey we are all on: to have gratitude forthe simple things in life and for the people we hold close to our hearts. And if we are faced with adversity, we should not give up hope.

We are grateful to Krista and her family for sharing her story with us.We know that out of this heartbreak, some good can come of it bytaking Krista’s advice and following her incredible example. Sheremains an inspiration to us all.

please read her story featured in our summer issue, available on ourwebsite.

You may already know thenumbers - cataracts affect morethan 22 million Americans aged40 and older, and by age 80,over half of all Americans havethem. but did you also know

that children can develop cataracts? Such wasthe case with Diana James, who was born with acataract in one eye.

"Diana was eleven when she really noticed hersight deteriorating," says Jason Gorscak, m.D.,Florida eye microsurgical Institute’s refractiveCataract Surgery, Glaucoma & ComprehensiveOphthalmology Specialist. "Congenital cataractsrun in the family, on her father’s side." Andaccording to Diana, "I wasn’t the only sibling to

have the condition. One of my sisters andher three children were born with cataracts, and a brother of mine had them as well."

When Diana came to see Dr. Gorscak shetold him she couldn’t see anything far awayand she could barely read the blackboard inschool. "I had to scrunch my eyes to see,and I wore my glasses even though I hatedthem." eventually Diana says she couldn’tsee the blackboard even with her glasses, and she was having difficulties witheverything from reading to working on thecomputer.

Dr. Gorscak removed Diana’s cataract as anoutpatient procedure at the Institute’s state-of-the-art boynton beach AmbulatoryCenter. the procedure itselfphacoemulsification – or phaco – is themost popular surgical procedure practicedtoday, due to its minimal invasiveness andquick post-op recovery time.

“Healing and rehabilitation are faster withthis procedure, and there is little, if any, discomfort,” adds Dr. Gorscak. “At Floridaeye we perform almost all of our cataractsurgeries, from young children throughmature adults, utilizing phaco.”

YCataract Surgical Treatments

And due to improving technology in thefield, today there are a variety of choices inreplacement lens. "the lens chosendepends upon the outcome each patient islooking for," says Dr. Gorscak. “In Diana’scase, she wanted to be able to work on her

computer, see the blackboard in class andto be able to enjoy her life to the fullest.” And the results? "I am so thrilled," saysDiana. "Dr. Gorscak said I’d most likely stillneed glasses but I don’t, and I can see somuch better than I ever did before.everything is so clear!"

For more information on cataract surgeryand available lens replacement options, visit www.fleyedocs.com or call (561) 737-5500 for an appointment.

Meet Dr. Khan Wellington’s Most Successful Cardiologist

By Saajida Shakeer | Photography by Robyn Barkley

On September 29, the 2012Heart Walk of the PalmBeaches and 5k Run willtake place at the MeyerAmphitheatre downtown.According to the AmericanHeart Association, one inevery three people hassome type of heart disease. It is the nation’s numberone killer, claiming morethan 800,000 lives a year.No one knows that statisticquite like Waqar Khan, MD,one of our region’s mostsuccessful doctors.

Dr. Khan is double-board certified in cardiologyand interventional cardiology; his extensive

educational history, as well as his experience, gives nodoubt as to how he has obtained his success. He holds amaster’s degree in public Health from the University oftexas. He completed his residency in Internal medicine atUt medical School in 1992; by 1997, he had also completed3 fellowships: in cardiology, vascular medicine andperipheral vascular interventions, and interventionalcardiology.

He started practicing privately in texas; from may 1997 toApril 2011, Dr. Khan ran Cardiovascular Clinic of texas. It

won the “business of the Year” award by the Lone Star CollegeSystem in 2008 and was again nominated in 2009 by the texasChamber of Commerce. Starting in 2005, Dr. Khan has been named“top Doc” 7 years in a row by H magazine, in which rankings arebased on reviews from patients and colleagues. After 14 prosperousyears in Houston, Dr. Khan and his wife decided to move to Floridaand open Heart and Vascular Care of South Florida and the palmbeach Vein Center, both located in Wellington.

He explains what being double-board certified means to his practiceand his patients: “As a general cardiologist, I see a whole gamut ofcardiology problems, from chest pains to rhythm disorders to heartfailure. As an interventional cardiologist, I’m trained to do moreinvasive procedures, such as heart angioplasties and cleaning outblockages in the lower extremities, like the legs, as well as thecarotid artery in the neck.”

He is one of the few cardiologists in South Florida who is trained toperform the revolutionary carotid artery stenting procedure, in whicha stent (a metal-mesh tube) is inserted to expand the carotid artery, which then increases blood flow. this used to be a complicatedprocess, requiring general anesthesia to cut open a blocked artery;now, it is done through the groin while the patient is under mildsedation. because the new technique is much simpler, patientsrequire less recovery time and are usually able to go home the nextday.

Needless to say, Dr. Khan’s numerous accolades and affiliations, extensive training and experience have all earned him a top spotamong doctors in Florida and texas. So what was it that got Dr. Khanso interested in cardiology in the first place? He explains, “I like thisspecialty because I’m able to make a real difference. I’m able to treata patient and see immediate results. It’s a great feeling.”

Recipe for a Great Workout

I must admit that while my husband did not marry me for my culinaryskills, I am known for simple but effective “recipes” when it comes tofitness. I believe in sticking to the basics and I try to keep my life asuncomplicated as possible. that means staying far away from allthose crazy diets and gadgets that claim that you can lose weightfast. I truly can’t believe how many people are still trying to find thatquick fix to lose weight.

Getting healthy isn’t the easiest thing to do but the rewards that youwill receive from the time and energy you invest are truly priceless.Following is a “recipe” to use each and every day to assist you onyour journey to health and wellness:

INGreDIeNtS

1 pair of workout shoesComfortable workout clothes towelWater bottleYoga mat (preferred but not necessary) ipod (not necessary but definitely recommended)Good attitudeFacility or place to workout (home, park, fitness facility, etc.)30-60 minutes devoted entirely to exercising with no distractions(cell phones are off limits).

After putting on your workout clothes and comfortable gym shoes, find a place you feel comfortable exercising in. If at home, turn onthe music or watch an exercise DVD. Some cable packages offer fit-ness channels that can help you throughout your workout. If you be-long to a gym, use it to feed off of everyone else’s energy.

mix good attitude with water and begin to move. Add sweat and con-tinue to move for 30 – 60 minutes. Use towel to wipe sweat and singalong to music to help you through your last few sets or last few min-utes of your class or exercise DVD.

Finish with some stretches and add a loud yell or celebratory danceknowing you just kicked your own butt and did an awesome job.

repeat this at least three times a week and enjoy the rewards. Youwill begin to look and feel like a new person before you know it. passthis recipe on to your friends so they can also enjoy the sweet tasteof victory. bon appetité!

Fertility and Acupuncture

hile attending the Doctor of Acupuncture andOriental medicine program for “Women’s Health”,we had a senior acupuncturist tell us that all fertilitytreatments can be summed up easily. She said,

“the womb in Chinese medicine is called the Zigong (baby’s palace).“You simply need to keep it warm, happy and well nourished, and ababy will want to come and grow there.” You may be surprised toknow that some foods, life style choices, stress and poor nutrition canoften lead to problems conceiving, especially after everything else hasbeen ruled out.

Getting Ready for PregnancyAfter a couple knows they’re pregnant, they want to prepare a child’sroom. It is even more important, before you start trying, to prepareyour womb.

Using acupuncture and herbs solo is the least invasive, and effective.Using acupuncture along with western tests, such as hormone levels, egg viability, sperm counts, and ultra sound can decrease frustrationand target the treatments more effectively. Acupuncture and herbscan be used to strengthen the general constitution to allow the body toready for fertilization, natural or otherwise.

Factors to Watch for You and Your Spouse: • too much or too Little exercise • too much Stress• Overworking• Long Hours of Work• Late Nights at Work• poor eating• eating Inconsistently• too many processed Foods• Intoxicants

Watch What You EatChinese medicine talks about having a cold uterus. It equates to alack of blood nutrition and literal warmth within the body in westernphysiology. Warming foods are much better for you; however, a dietcatered to your own constitution works the best. the easiest rule is toavoid processed food as much as possible. You are building bloodand energy reserves for yourself and your baby. Discontinue the useof caffeine, nicotine and alcohol as these additives restrict blood flow.this is the best time to think about dieting and the best time to takeyour prenatal vitamins. You are preparing a room that a baby wants tocome and grow in for nine months.

Get your Spouse in ShapeYou need a healthy Dad for many reasons. Have his sperm counttested. Acupuncture and herbs can help, but it may take time. Stress, poor diet, medications, and intoxicants can all limit your partner’sfertility. the sperm used in conception are produced a couple monthsbefore and therefore the male needs to also be cultivating a healthylifestyle. You might add in praying or mediating together to add aspiritual component to your other lifestyle changes.

Get Your Body in Shapemoving your body keeps the blood flowing but don’t overdo it. begentle to yourself. A healthy body wants to conceive!

Having a Healthy Pregnancy:Follow your doctor’s instructions and timeline for check-ups. Seekacupuncture to try to avoid medications for morning sickness, headaches, colds, back pain and labor preparation. Start prenatalyoga and deep breathing training early.

One Last Thoughteach positive step for your health can increase your odds inconceiving, leads to an easier labor and delivery, and increases thehealth of your baby. Keep your “baby’s palace” warm, happy andnourished and you may see great results.

For those of you whotuned in to the games, you might have noticedsome interesting taping“artwork” on some ofthe athletes. thetechnical name for it iskinesio taping. theword “kinesio” is shortfor the term kinesiology(the study of movement).trainers commonly tapefootball players beforethey go out on the field toprevent or protect a body partfrom injury. their tape is quiterigid and usually limits theplayer’s range of motion. the kinesio tape has much greaterelasticity and adhesive qualities that has led to many different uses.this tape must be felt in person to realize how different it is fromany other. It has been likened to another layer of skin on the body, which is what makes this so different from wearing a brace.

I have been using this tape for the last 20 years and enjoy watchingthe before and after reaction from clients when it is first applied. thephoto here shows one of the most popular uses of kinesio tape. Some clients have one or both kneecaps (patella) that do not trackproperly during leg movements. typically, a muscle tightness orweakness on one side of the patella causes it. this can lead toclicking, grinding and, if not taken care of, arthritis. While physicaltherapy can eliminate this problem, the kinesio tape can greatlyspeed up the recovery and prevent it from recurring.

You may have seen this tape on other body parts. On the lowerback it can be applied to prevent the spine from leaving the safepostural position. this would allow you to stay active but avoid thepain and spasm from improper movements. On the shoulder, it canbe applied with the purpose of avoiding a dislocation or subluxationof the joint. It can be applied to the foot to support the arch from apainful collapse during running or walking. Some techniques can betaught to clients, while others need to be professionally applied. thetaping techniques can be adjusted in tension, placement and orderof application to allow the most pain-free function for eachindividual. It is truly an asset to the medical field and will onlybecome more effective and popular when handled by well-trainedprofessionals. please visit wellness-experience.com for moreinformation.

Volunteering for your Health

By Sue GallupDirector of Volunteer Services, Hospice of Palm Beach County

becoming a volunteer gives people the chance to do somethingsignificant and to make a difference in the lives of others. Once theybegin, many realize that they get much more from their service thanthey could ever give. that has been the experience of Hospice ofpalm beach County volunteer Lori Weiss who recently told me, “Inmy short time volunteering with Hospice, my patient’s wonderfulstories and life lessons have taught me to slow down and take thetime to enjoy every day of my life.”

the rewards for volunteers go far beyond feeling good and helpingothers - volunteering actually has health benefits. A growing body ofresearch over the past twenty years indicates that volunteeringprovides health benefits in addition to social benefits. “this researchhas established a strong relationship between volunteering andhealth: those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greaterfunctional ability, and lower rates of depression later in life than thosewho do not volunteer.” *

According to the U.S. bureau of Labor Statistics, about 64.3 millionpeople volunteered through or for an organization at least oncebetween September 2010 and September 2011. While Americans aretraditionally generous with their time and energy, the reasons forvolunteering are often quite personal. “I became a patient-visitingvolunteer for Hospice of palm beach County because Hospice madea big difference to my family when my father and father-in-law passedlast year,” Lori Weiss added. Knowing how much the two menappreciated regular visits from friends, family and volunteers, Loriwas prompted to learn about the organization’s various opportunities.“All I wanted was to make people feel valued, respected andimportant as they deal with their daily struggles. I hadn’t imaginedhow much I would benefit as well,” Lori explained. “It brought me anew friendship, renewed meaning and appreciation for my life. that’sa lot!”

If you are looking for a meaningful volunteer experience, Hospice ofpalm beach County has volunteer opportunities with our patients andfamilies, in our resale shops and offices, and at our special events. For more information, please call 561.227.5138 or visit hpbc.com.

The DefenseAgainst Statins

CoQ10:For many of us, high cholesterol seems like a lurking figure in theshadows. It’s a problem we know may exist, but until it jumps out andgives us a scare, most feel like avoidance is best. Although diet andexercise (as well as other lifestyle changes) are the best line ofdefense against this offender, some patients require treatment withstatin drugs. For those who are unfamiliar with that term, I amreferring to drugs such as Lipitor (atorvastatin), Zocor (simvastatin),Crestor (rosuvastatin), pravachol (pravastatin), or mevacor(lovastatin). For those on a red yeast rice supplement, you’reincluded in this patient category as well. Although not considered anFDA regulated prescription drug, red yeast rice contains anundetermined amount of naturally-occurring lovastatin.

While statins accomplish the task of lowering levels of blood LDL(bad cholesterol) they do take a toll on the body. It is well known thatstatins, including the components of red yeast rice, cause depletionof the body’s Coenzyme Q10 levels. CoQ10 is naturally made by thebody. It is an essential component of cardiovascular health. Inaddition, it is believed that reduction of CoQ10 levels in musclesplays a role in myopathy, a significant side effect of statin drugs.Supplementation with CoQ10 may alleviate the symptoms ofmyopathy associated with statin use. more importantly, it will serve toprevent cardiovascular problems that may occur as a result of CoQ10depletion.

Our bodies are our vessels in this life. As with any other vessel, wemust take care of ourselves to the best of our capability. As much aspossible, we should incorporate lifestyle choices that aid us in ourquest. Only when absolutely necessary should medical interventionbe used. And in these situations, we may need supplementation toovercome undesirable effects that such medical interventions maybring forth.

please come in to my Community pharmacy or visit: FreeDeLIVerYpHArmACY.COm for your CoQ10 and all yournutraceutical needs.
