  • PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3

This weekend we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord and then, the holy season of Christmas comes to an end. The Baptism of the Lord might seem an odd feast. Since the Catholic Church teaches that the Sacrament of Baptism is necessary for the remission of sins, particular-ly Original Sin, why was Christ baptized? After all, He was born without Original Sin, and He lived His entire life without sinning. Therefore, He had no need of the sacrament, as we do. In submitting Himself humbly to the baptism of St. John the Baptist, however, Christ provided the example for the rest of us. If even He should be baptized, though He had no need of it, how much more should the rest of us be thankful for this sacrament, which frees us from the dark-ness of sin and incorporates us into the Church, the life of Christ on earth! His Baptism, there-fore, was necessary--not for Him, but for us. Many of the Fathers of the Church, as well as the medieval Scholastics, saw Christ's Baptism as the institution of the sacrament. His Flesh blessed the water, and the descent of the Holy Spirit (in the form of a dove) and the voice of God the Father announcing that this was His Son, in Whom He was well pleased, marked the beginning of Christ's public ministry. Also this Sunday’s celebration, of the baptism of Jesus, is a good opportunity to give thanks to God for the gift of our own baptism, and also thank our parents who brought us in the church to received this unmerited gift. How many of us know the day of our baptism. Many of us remember more others especial celebrations such as graduation, weddings, birthday, etc. our baptism day is also an important event, be-cause it is a new birth, actually it is the most important day to remember, because that day we became a child of God. Sign of Peace & Holy Communion: Several parishioners have come to us concerning the "“Sign of Peace" and the reception of "Holy Communion from the Cup" during this cold and flu season. Concerning the exchange of some form of the sign of peace in the communion rite, it is worth noting that the General Introduction of the Roman Missal, GIRM does not mandate a particular manner for how this is to be done. If one does not wish to shake hands at this time, then a suitable gesture, such as a nod of the head or a verbal exchange of peace, would be gracious and fitting. If a person knows that they have the cold or flu and attend the celebration, for the good of others, it would be better not to shake hands, but rather choose another suitable gesture. Regarding the reception of the Precious Blood of the Lord I will sus-pend until Holy Thursday. The “General Instruction of the Roman Missal” (no. 282) and the “Distribution and Recep-tion of Holy Communion under Both Kinds for the Dioceses of the United States of America” (nos. 15-16) reiterate the faith of the Catholic Church that Christ, whole and entire, is received even under only one species. Parishioners are not bound by any obligation to attend Mass on Sunday if they are sick or have been exposed to the flu. They should return to church only when they are well. Fr. Mariano Varela, IVE

The Catholic Communities of the Greater Mankato Area. Recently we the pastors of Mankato and North Mankato have discussed the growing number of Masses that we celebrate (not only on the weekends), but most especially during the week. Some of us expressed concerns that we were celebrating as many as 2 and 3 Masses daily (The Catholic church teaching is that a priest offers, if at all possible, only one Mass each day to keep the Mass spirit-ually vibrant for the priest as well) along with the decline in priestly numbers, an aging clergy, heavy workloads, irregular sched-ules, we discussed as priests how we might become more efficient in offering fewer Masses, becoming more pastoral to the living centers that we are serving. The new proposal will be to have a Mass offered four times a month by the same priest. • Fr. Tim Biren (St. Joseph’s) will cover all of the liturgies for Hillcrest care facility on Wednesday at 9:30 A.M. • Fr. John Kunz (St. John’s) will be covering all of the liturgy at Laurel’s Peak care facilities on Thursday at 3:00 P.M • Fr. Paul van de Crommert (Holy Rosary) will be covering all of the liturgies at Pathstone care facility on Wednesday at

10:15 A.M • Fr. Mariano Varela, IVE (Ss Peter and Paul) will be covering all of the liturgies at Oaklawn care facility on Tuesday at 3:30

P.M In addition, the pastor of Mankato will also be taking on the work of offering a Mass once a month at the following assisted living facilities. • Fr. Tim Biren (St. Joseph’s) Will be offering Mass once a month at Oak Terrace care facility on the second Tuesday at 9:30

A.M • Fr. John Kunz (St. John’s) will be offering Mass once a month at Keystone care facility on the first Wednesday of the

month at 10:00 A.M • Fr. Paul van de Crommert (Holy Rosary) will be offering Mass once a month at Monarch Meadows on the fourth Friday of

the month at 10:15 A.M • Fr. Mariano Varela, IVE will be offering Mass once a month at Primrose on the second Tuesday at 9:30 A.M
