There is talk of extend- ing the two year-term to a three-year term. By extending the duration of the mayoral stay to a three year-term, the city of Toronto will be saving millions of dollars spent for elections by one year, which means we will have two elections instead of three in a six-year period. We are looking at a savings of 33% spent for the budget allocated for elections. There are several other issues that require serious attention, including extending the train lines from Downsview to York University . As the population of the city grows, the need for transportation will grow correspondingly. Not to mention the effect on the environment as a result of so many trips made by Toronto city buses between Downsview and York University . Currently, the city of Toronto is swim- ming in $85 million in debt. Unless the federal or provincial governments step in to save us all, it will mean raising property taxes on the resi- dents of the city. This election should address the department the city of Toronto is immersed in and whoever has the best solution for that prob- lem should be given the chance to govern the city of Toronto . David Miller has scored a huge victory for the residents of Toronto when he exposed the corrupted comput- er deal made by the treasurer for his own personal gain, the hiring and promotion of sexual favors by one high official in the licensing department, as well as the killing of the bridge deal between the city of Toronto and the island airport. This election also includes voting for school board trustees for four school boards. The school boards are: The Toronto District School Board; Conseil scolaire du district Centre- Sud-Ouest; Toronto Catholic District School Board; and Conseil scolaire du district catholique Centre-Sud.

Torontonians Vote for a Mayor on November 13, 2006

Residents in the city of Toronto are voting for their mayor and council-lors on November 13, 2006. African Canadian communities have just as much responsibility to participate in this election for they too have a vested interest in these elections. For African Canadian communities, crime and the source of criminal activity should be the main issue to focus on. This year’s mayoral election ballot has 38 names to choose from, including the incumbent mayor David Miller. The city of Toronto residents are electing a mayor and 44 councillors for a two year-term. There is talk of extend-ing the two year-term to a three-year term. By extending the duration of the mayoral stay to a three year-term, the city of Toronto will be saving millions of dollars spent for elections by one year, which means we will have two elections instead of three in a six-year

period.

Currently, the city of Toronto is swim-ming in $85 million in debt. Unless the federal or provincial governments step in to save us all, it will mean raising property taxes on the resi-dents of the city. This election should address the department the city of Toronto is immersed in and whoever

has the best solution for that prob-lem should be given the chance to govern the city of Toronto . David Miller has scored a huge victory for the residents of Toronto when he exposed the corrupted comput-er deal made by the treasurer for his own personal gain, the hiring and promotion of sexual favors by one high official in the licensing department, as well as the killing of the bridge deal between the city of Toronto and the island airport.

This election also includes voting for school board trustees for four school boards. The school boards are:

termination of the youth peers to get some concrete answers about our community. Many of us are ready for dialogue. On the other hand, we only had 175 participants! We cannot even begin to summarize these responses as representative of the thousands of Eritreans in Toronto , Hamilton , and Ottawa . Since this was a pilot proj-ect, we were able to test the waters to see how Eritreans would respond to such a study conducted by their own community members. What the EYC youth observed was that there was such a willingness to share ex-periences and observations about the community from participants of all ages. Personally, as I analysed the data with the others, Tsehay Said, Kisanet Tezare, and the youth vol-unteers, I saw the depth of thought that went into the individual answers. Many people took this as an oppor-tunity for self-reflection, and that is exactly what we had hoped for with this project. What the research-ers agreed to do from the beginning was to put up a mirror and show the community what we are looking at some important issues. One of our major strengths is also reported in the study–88.7% of respondents said that the diaspora does play a role in peace-building. This means that we know it is up to us to build up the Eritrean di-aspora community to help our fellow Eritreans here in Canada–those of us struggling with job insecurity, pover-ty, health, racism, language barriers, housing, etc. At the same time, as we build capacity and strengthen our re-solve to participate we must continue

to work hard to develop Eritrea , as we have been doing since before our revolution.

An “Open” Conclusion–Future Goals of the EYC

I think we as youth in the diaspora are embarking on another, very dif-ferent revolution with some of the same goals in mind as the liberation struggle of our parents’ generation: social progress, economic stability and self-reliance, political clout, in-ternational recognition, and peace-ful coexistence. Our challenge is not another government or competing political parties. Our first challenge is to recognize ourselves as really being part of the diaspora in Canada , USA , Germany , Italy , Australia , Malta , South Africa , Libya , and the Su-dan . How are we doing as Eritreans? What can we do to help one another? What are our causes of conflict and lack of development? What are our strengths? The hardest part of this challenge is to look at a mirror and to see ourselves clearly. What parts of us are contributing to conflict and what parts of us transcend into peace-building, into sustaining mechanisms for social development, such as hon-est dialogue and information-sharing, mediation and acceptance? We must thank the Eritrean Students Asso-ciation (ESA) at York University for their leadership in starting this very challenging discussion a while back. The SPN project is one evolution of such discussion.

Overall, the consensus is that we need more - resources, capacity-building, and dialogue. I am happy to say that the Selam Peacebuilding Network donated $500.00 to the Eritrean Youth Coalition as a small start-up budget in order to move forward. What we have to our advantage is a diverse group of informed individuals with some solid knowledge of where the community stands right now–a clearer idea of the complex issues and a community willingness to be involved. I feel that we have been realistic in our assess-ment of the Eritrean community here in Toronto and we hope that the more experienced community members will guide us as youth. Many respon-dents said “it is up to the youth to lead us”– that the older generation is tired and busy. The youth are ready to take on this challenge but we do value your feedback and wisdom. There is little meaning to developing a youth coalition in our community without your sustained vision and support.

Please be advised that you are only choosing between a religious school board and a public school board. De-pending on the size of your ward, you will have a number of candidates to choose from.

It is important to come out and take part in this free and fair election. It is also advisable to speak with the

hopeful councillors and trustees who are running to represent your interest for the next two years. Make sure you elect the best person that you think can better represent your ideas and wishes. Do not elect people based on popularity, looks, or status. Elect them on the basis of their merit.

An unprecedented turn of events is taking place in Canada . Stephen Harper is calling for a by-election for November 27, 2006 in the middle of a Liberal party leadership race. The national Liberal party convention is to be held between November 27 and December 3. Cynical analysts are already calling it political oppor-tunism–the dirtiest political trick yet coming from Harper and his Conser-vative think-tank buddies. Canadians are not fond of electing a political leader whose aim is to frustrate the public by forcing them out into the cold twice for many Canadians and three times for Londoners in such a short period of time. Such despicable tactics will be met with either resis-tance by further reducing the ever decreasing voter turnout in Canada . This political tactic is designed with that idea or it might backfire, driv-ing Canadians to retaliate against the party and its leader who is playing such a dirty political game. It is obvi-ous that Harper and his buddies are designing this political trick to frus-trate Canadians just to stay in power at the expense of Liberal supporters who will feel the fatigue by staying

at home instead of going out to vote. Everyone knows that it was Harper who forced the election about ten months ago, hoping to score a huge victory but met with resistance from the public. And it is expected that he will encounter similar resistance, compromising the already shaky mi-nority government he is leading.

Harper knows that all Canadians are frustrated by the incompetence and poor judgment of the Conserva-tive think-tank ideology which tried to gain popularity by immersing the country in a war that only benefited a few rich friends. Canadians do not like to come out two or three times in a span of a couple of weeks to vote for a leader, but if properly informed, the tide might turn against Harper and his Conservative party. Londoners are going to elect their mayor on No-vember 13. The battle is so fierce that people are going to invest their ener-gies into that election and won’t wish to think about a federal election. One of the men running for the London mayoral position is a renowned fed-eral Liberal MP who is vacating his federal seat. By the time Londoners finish electing their mayor they may

need months before they are ready to go for another election. However, the main reason for Harper’s calling this election is to rain on the parade of the national Liberal party conven-tion which will take place between November 27 and December 3. That makes it difficult for the people of London to go to the election centre three times, but all the Liberal party grass roots who are anticipating a spirited leadership convention. So much for Harper’s ethics–someone who has been advocating for ethical government. The truth is that like his friend, George Bush, Harper enjoys paying lip-service to an ideal but al-ways does the opposite.

By the time people go and vote for the national by-election, the federal Liberal party will not have a leader to go head-to-head with Harper. This election can be considered as one de-signed to frustrate the Canadian pub-lic and shows that Harper is willing to spend taxpayers’ money irrespon-sibly. There will be no formidable opponent to beat and results are de-signed to prove that Canadians prefer Harper’s policies over those of his op-ponents. One of the most formidable parties would have been the Liberal party. However Harper is well aware that people are so frustrated with him that he doesn’t wish to risk eviction over nothing else besides pure policy. Unfortunately, that is not going to happen by calling for a national by-election in the middle of a formidable opponents’ convention. Even if he wins, his victory will not prove any-thing other than that his despicable political tactics helped him win at the expense of the valuable time of the Canadian electorate.

By J. Haile The time has come when every Liberal party member needs to stand up and take part in the upcoming race to elect a fed-eral party leader who will take us to the next Liberal majority government. The most important element for us here is not just to elect any leader, but we owe it to ourselves to make an informed decision to vote for the right person to defeat Ste-phen Harper. The current federal Liberal leadership race will determine how our country will rank among the G-7 coun-tries as well as other developed nations. Believe it or not, this race will also deter-mine the next ten-to-twelve year policy design and wealth distribution among all Canadians, not to mention healthcare ser-vices, national childcare, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and every oth-er issue of importance to all Canadians. For those of you who are not Liberal par-ty members yet, this article should serve as a signal for future participation. If my commentary convinces even one person to endorse the Liberal party, then I will feel that I have done my job. You should all know that this election is considered to be the most interesting leadership race as there is a lot at stake for all of us Cana-dian immigrants who have come to this beautiful country in search of peace and the good life. At the beginning of the year eleven can-didates registered their names for the federal Liberal leadership race. Only eight candidates remain. Three of the candidates who withdrew from the lead-ership bid have given their total support to the man they think has the experience and leadership qualities to represent the federal Liberal party and break through all ‘government-gridlock’, leading a fair and accountable government as well as represent Canada internationally. That man is none other than the right Hon. Bob Rae. To quote Dr. Carolyn Bennett (former federal Liberal Health Minis-ter) upon withdrawing from the leader-ship race, “Mr. Rae has the experience to lead our party, bring us all together, and do the most important thing - stop Stephen Harper’s Republican agenda.” She further explained that, “…dealing with poverty, violence, the environment, affordable housing, equity, early child-hood development, and education will be essential to reducing the demand on our cherished health care system. Bob is a truly great Canadian. He understands this country and all the complexities that define it. As an experienced statesperson, he is the best person to articulate an ef-fective and independent foreign policy for Canada and play a positive role in the world.” The second person to withdraw from the leadership race was Mr. Bevi-lacqua who had been secretary of state for International Financial Institutions during the previous federal Liberal gov-ernment. He said, “I decided that the best way to continue to have the biggest im-pact on the nation’s fiscal and economic affairs was to support Bob Rae’s cam-paign and work with him to advance our economic vision for the country. Bob and I share common objectives and concerns and I believe he is best able to help make our shared goals a reality for our party and for Canada .” Dr. Hedy Fry, the third person to withdraw from the race, said, “I have watched him (Bob Rae) closely over the last few months. I am now con-vinced that he (Bob Rae) has the expe-rience; a deep understanding of who we are as Canadians; and the political skills to win a Liberal majority in the next elec-tion, whenever it is called.” Indeed, she is right. Bob is the leader to win a majority for the next federal Liberal party which will be called sometime soon. By now all readers should know clearly whom I would like you to support. Sur-prisingly, one of the leading persons in this leadership race, Dr. Michael Ignati-eff, is an inexperienced politician who has been living outside of Canada for the past 27 years; he only returned to Toronto in 2005. And his position on the Iraq war is no different from Harper’s. As you can see, Harper who is leading the federal Conservatives is following the wrong course of action. Both these men believe that Canada should have joined the Iraq

war. If the war in Iraq was to last another two years, and Mr. Ignatieff was leading the federal Liberal party, not only would we lose the opportunity to have a majori-ty federal Liberal government, but Cana-dian troops would be sent to Iraq to take part in this unjust war. The scariest thing of all is that even after discovering the wrongness of this war, Mr. Ignatieff be-lieves that Canada would have done the right thing by taking part in it. So that is one reason why we need to make an in-formed decision when elect-ing a leader who will take us to victory–someone who is sober, highly informed, and politically sound–someone who will completely evict Harper and his Conserva-tive stooges from 24 Sus-sex Drive and the saddle of government. We need to replace them all with the best that Canada has to of-fer. As all of the three politi-cians who have dropped out of the leadership bid have said, that person can only be Bob Rae. As soon as Harper and his Conservative party were elected in January 2006, they extended the peace keeping mission to Afghan-istan for another two years. This was done without con-sulting the public or giving other party politicians the chance to ask important questions in the House of Commons, thus violating basic democratic principles. To top it off, like George Bush, he thumbed his nose at the Canadian media by preventing them from taking pictures of fallen servicemen and women returning from Afghanistan . Mr. Ignatieff comes from Harvard where he held a teaching position for years, and to please George Bush, he too is seeking to immerse Canada into the hotbed cre-ated by the very people who refused to admit their mistakes in Iraq . As the cur-rent situation in Iraq and even Afghani-stan continues to deteriorate, the people who voted for Mr. Bush are resenting him more and more for having misled them into participating in a wrong war. That is why all Liberal sympathizers (both declared and undeclared) who are considering extending their support to Mr. Ignatieff need to stop and think thor-oughly before resenting him later just as the Americans now resent George Bush. Whoever is elected as the next leader of the Liberal party will go head to head with Stephen Harper for the federal election. It is no hidden secret that Canadians are frustrated with Harper’s government and if elections were held today, there would no doubt be a majority Liberal victory. However, having Mr. Ignatieff as Liberal party leader would mean scrambling to compete for a minority government or for a strong opposition since his views are closer to Harper’s when it comes to the issue of Iraq . The recent interview with TVO has proven that Mr. Ignati-eff display flip-flop characteristics; he makes decision too quickly and reverses them later. This article is not intended to present Mr. Ignatieff in a bad light but to ensure that we have a majority govern-ment in the next election. We should all welcome him into the Liberal party. After all a man with such remarkable academic credentials would have an important role to play in the Liberal party. He is known to be a good human rights defender and his presence would enrich the party and bring many more people who supported him during the Liberal super weekend lit-mus-test vote held throughout the coun-try between Sept 29 and Oct 1. Canada ’s policy has always been peace-keeping not peace-making since 1957 when former Liberal Canadian Prime Minister, The Right Hon. Lester B. Pear-son initiated peacekeeping. He stipulated that all peacekeeping mandates are to be sanctioned by the United Nations. That was his brainchild. Unfortunately, the current Canadian government led by the Conservatives is attempting to destroy that neutral stand Canada has enjoyed for

half a century. In the process of maintain-ing peace and serenity between warring nations, Canada has lost a few persons who have fallen victim to unfortunate cir-cumstances in decades of service around the world. Since 2002, Canada has lost 42 of its finest young men and women on a peacekeeping mission to Afghanistan while another 168 have been wounded in battle. This is not the end either. Some

military officials on the ground pre-dict many more casualties will come as the Taliban insurgents grow fiercer and bolder. Any person with common sense can see that the longer Canadian soldiers stay in Afghanistan , the more casualties Canada will suffer. Electing Bob Rae will mean allowing a debate on the presence of Canadian troops in Afghanistan and giving other party members a chance to ask important questions. It is also important to consider other fac-tors. The current Republican administra-tion in the United States has been the guiding light of Harper and his Conser-vative party, essentially surrendering the sovereignty of Canada ’s foreign policy. It seems that if we wish to know what Harper will do next week, all we have to do is listen to the news of what George Bush is doing this week. Fortunately, there is going to be a term by-election in the United States sometime early No-vember. Many expect the current situa-tion to favor the opposition party. The next American government and all its functions will undoubtedly be influenced by Democratic Party policy. Canada is a sovereign state with a sovereign political system and the United States is Canada ’s main economic partner. Some would put Canada ’s trade with the United States as high as 85% of its Gross National Product. But by electing a person whose political philosophy is relatively close to that of the American government would help. Bob Rae’s political philosophy is quite similar to those who are going to have decision-making power in the Unit-ed States . Therefore electing Bob Rae is not only important but essential for all Canadians. No one can defend Canadi-ans’ interest better than Bob Rae can; he will strengthen the existing bridge with the United States . The other important issue facing Canada will be that of border crossing with the United States . Cana-dians trade two billion dollars daily with the U.S. This issue requires a high-cali-ber, intelligent, and experienced politi-cian and, again, Bob Rae is our best bet. Bob Rae is the politician most respected by all minorities and mainstream Canadi-an society. Even though all the other can-didates are just as superb Liberals, Bob Rae is the best candidate who can bind the wounded party created by differences between the center-right and center-left. He does not believe in war; he believes in solving differences through consulta-

tion and dialogue. Most importantly, he is a friend of minority Canadians who are hardworking, yet get nowhere due to social barriers. Under his leadership hardworking minority Canadians will be better positioned to achieve greater eco-nomic freedom as well as the right to pur-sue bigger dreams. Bob Rae was the first leader in the history of Ontario to include an African-Canadian in his cabinet in the

government he led from 1990 to 1995. Under the difficult economic cloud over North America (some would say the worst economic times since the great depression of the 1930s), Bob Rae was able to guide the most populous prov-ince in Canada and passed many bills involving minorities for the first time, scoring a victory to improve their liveli-hood. His model of treating minorities with respect was rejected by his suc-cessor, the notorious Mike Harris who is apparently the quar-terback of Harper’s government. The current federal Conservative party continues to em-brace Mike Harris’ style of government that can only be ex-plained as racist at

best and dangerous to all Canadians. Instead of finding the root causes of this nightmarish drama and de-sign a policy to heal it, Harper is adding more fuel to the fire by passing a bill for more prison terms for gun related offens-es. The inconsistency of his policy is fun-ny at times and confusing at others. He wants to abolish the gun registry which is supposed to help reduce gun related crimes. His policy towards the gun prob-lem in Canada , but most importantly in urban Ontario , can be compared to pre-scribing a band aid solution to a cancer patient. Not even a child would contem-plate such a response to such a complex, dangerous problem. Even though Harper is well aware that it was Mike Harris’ policy which was intended to destroy the safety net created by Rae’s government for lost kids, he has deliberately imple-mented dangerous policies which have led to the loss of children involved in un-productive activities as well as innocent bystanders. As we step into the twenty-first cen-tury, globalization is not only a reality but something we should all embrace. Unfortunately, the current definition of a democratic nation continues to resist accommodating that change which is necessary to all. While election is only one factor of a democratic process, there are many issues that have yet to be in-cluded, such as economic freedom for people who live in such a wealthy nation like Canada . Canada is one of the most envied countries even among economi-cally great nations (G-7), and yet we can visibly identify inconsistencies in eco-nomic achievement amongst Canadians which seem to be directly related to the color of our skin. The hierarchy goes as follows: the lighter the tone of our skin, the higher are our chances of achieving greater economic freedom. But humans with more melanin gene carriers who are just as driven towards success remain at the lower economic scale of Canadian so-ciety. Some might be tempted to explain this scenario through a quick and readily available idea at their finger tips. How-ever, as a melanin-rich Canadian who used to share similar readily available responses, I have now come to my senses by learning facts the hard way. Instead of dwelling about the problems, let me ex-press my idea as to how things could be improved. I feel confident enough to let loose my guard and live in my country comfortably. In a country that exchang-es more than a trillion dollars in Gross

Domestic Product (GDP) yearly, as a competitive citizen of this great nation I feel I should have a part to play in it. But due to the very factor mentioned earlier I have been limited to struggling to exist with resentment towards my country. The political arena here is such that it is un-willingly to provide solutions by opening up opportunities so that carriers of mela-nin rich gene humans can feel at home and we don’t have to look elsewhere for greener pastures. In its October 18 edition, the Globe and Mail published its most recent poll in national politics on the topic of whether ‘Rae would do better against Harper.’ The poll indicated that former Ontario Pre-mier Bob Rae would be the best potential prime minister the Liberals could choose to take on Stephen Harper. When Mr. Rae is figured into a race against Mr. Harper, the NDP’s Jack Layton and the Bloc Québécois’ Gilles Duceppe, 26% say Mr. Rae would be the best prime minister of the four. Mr. Layton was picked by 15% and Mr. Duceppe by 6%. By comparison, the front-running Michael Ignatieff was chosen by 23% in a battle against Mr. Harper, who was picked by 37% in such a contest. Of the other two main candi-dates, Stéphane Dion and Gerard Ken-nedy, 21% would pick Mr. Dion over the others and 17% would opt for Mr. Ken-nedy. Criticisms that Mr. Rae would do worse in Ontario than his counterparts appear to be at least somewhat checked by the poll, which shows that 29% of On-tarians believe Mr. Rae would be the best prime minister, well higher than the 23% who picked Mr. Ignatieff and the 20% and 21%, respectively, who picked Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Dion. The writer of this report believes that by accommodating the new twenty-first century definition of a democratic nation, that is, the unconditional inclusion of all Canadians to enjoy life without resent-ment, we may stand a chance to reverse the status-quo so that we can share in the economic benefits Canada has achieved thus far. All politicians should aspire to pursue the new definition and get en-dorsement from minorities first and fore-most before they go after mainstream Ca-nadian society. I believe the Liberal party should go ahead and embrace this politi-cal frame of thinking, and party political strategists should think about it and make it a platform base to follow for every as-piring Liberal politician. This should be a common understanding of all Liberal politicians, be they provincial or federal who have the ambition to represent Ca-nadian society in the House of Commons as well as internationally. In this day and age, broadening representation should be a priority as a symbol of a free and demo-cratic society. The status-quo is short of total and unconditional inclusion of all segments of Canadian society. If a politi-cian is to spend my taxes on my behalf, then I too should benefit from wherever the funds are to be allocated. Canada can-not be considered a full-fledged demo-cratic nation as it stands. We are only exploiting what partially democratic na-tions can afford. The Liberal party should encourage the electorate to endorse, first and foremost, the one who gathers the most minority voices Bob Rae cast his bid for the Liberal lead-ership last and yet went to gather support from all minority communities first, while the other candidates who started early on ignored minorities altogether as if we do not matter. I believe Mr. Rae is the closest to achieving the representation of minori-ties. His main message has been to reach out to all minorities such as aboriginal peoples, women’s groups, minorities, and student groups. The other candidates running for the Liberal party leadership focused their energies on wooing main-stream Canadian society while ignoring minority groups. Electing the other can-didates to represent all Canadians is not only wrong but it will crack open the val-ues of the Liberal party in the long run, depriving it of the new era definition of what democracy ought to accommodate in the twenty-first century in a multicul-tural society like Canada .

With the constant struggle to sur-vive–from paying our bills on time to trying to graduating on time–we rarely allow ourselves to be inspired. When I say we, I mean young Eritreans who are trying to create our own identity in the midst of our parents’ sto-ries and our own ambitions. To blaze our own trails, we some-times need share the flames. We need those who’ve taken the path less traveled to show us the way and tell us their stories. Know-ing someone who looks like us and with a similar background but who was able to succeed is enough to convince that the stars are attainable. As high school students start making that ‘what’s next’ deci-sion, an Awards show unlike others before it, is set to feature young people, indicating that they are more than just their means. The Aroni Awards will be held on December 10 at the Atlantis Entertainment Complex, featuring some of Canada ’s most talented live performers. This is an event that promises to bring young people in touch with cor-porate contacts, possibly giving first generation immigrants with the keys to open doors that were slammed shut onur parents. Who was Aron? The award was named after a young Eritrean man, who had a tremendous impact on so many in his short life. Aron Haile, affec-tionately called Aroni, was born in Asmara in 1973 and immi-grated to Canada in 1987. While working as a software developer

at BMO, he spent his spare time working with Xclusive Entertain-ment in the hopes of one day tak-ing over the award gala responsi-bilities. As described by Mesfun Haile, who is currently spear-heading this initiative, “Aron embodied the idea of mentor-ship…he was accessible and tol-erant”. While traveling in Eritrea in 2003, Aron was laid to rest after the bus he was on collided with another vehicle. In honor of his life and work, the awards are meant to ‘honor individuals who exemplify through their work what Aron epitomized during his short life’. Four grants will be given away that night, reppresenting financial aid to students who lack strong academic achievement, but show a deep commitment to commu-nity service, a positive outlook, and continue to persevere de-spite socio-economic hardships. The candidates will be students in their final year of high school and committed to pursuing higher education. An independent com-mittee comprised of community leaders will determine the final recipients of the 2006 Aroni Im-age Awards. A strong area of concern for the organizing committee right now is getting Eritrean youths nominat-ed. The organizers can’t nominate anyone; the candidates are chosen by an independent committee so a real push needs to be done in our community to nominate young kids who have the heart and drive to succeed but may not have the means to reach it. While speaking with Mesfun, he noted that “there is no perfect story; success comes

they’ll get to enjoy an evening where they can meet and network with possible employers or at least future colleagues who can help steer them in the right direc-tion. All it takes is the right role model, that one phone number or being at the right place to open up so many options. And that is what we need, those of us who work so hard to surpass the dreams our parents have for us and to push the limits set by a society sometimes so determined to see us fall. The evening promises to be “a quality event that can help pro-mote and open up our commu-nity” with a solid global turnout from young professionals to established corporate contacts. Those in a position to help can assist through event sponsor-ship, table sponsorship, silent auctions, an “around the world in many plates’ culinary tour and an arts gallery. All profits will go to the AroniAwards, ensuring that this event continues for years to come. Please visit the website, www.aro-niawards.com, call 416-985-5185, or email [email protected]. The gala will be held on Sunday December 10, 2006 at Atlantis Pavillions, 955 Lakeshore Blvd from 4:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m.

By this time, some of you might have heard about the Selam Peacebuilding Network (SPN). The Selam Peace-building Network is, as of now, a group of five individuals who took on a project by the University for Peace (UPEACE) from August 2006-October 2006 entitled, “The Role of the Eritrean Diaspora in Peacebuild-ing and Development: Challenges and Opportunities.” Since we have just finished with the final report of the project and have presented the findings at the UPEACE High Level Expert Forum, entitled “ Capacity Building for Peace and Development: Roles of Diaspora” on 19-20 October 2006, this is a good time for me to share my reflections with you regard-ing the project.

Let me explain my own role. I was invited to participate in the project as a Researcher and Youth Coordinator with the SPN team by Tsehay Said, Kisanet Tezare, Daniel Baheta and Amanuel Melles. My involvement

in Toronto and have thus been the life-blood of this project! The EYC has legitimized the fact that such a study analyzing Community Involve-ment, Conflict and Peacebuilding is necessary and worthwhile in our community. The EYC was central to brainstorming the research questions for the survey (these were not created by the “research team.” It was all of us as youth who came up with them). In total we had 175 participants in two months:

52 – Key Informant Interviews

· 57 – Online Surveys

· 10 – Personal Reflections

· 8 (x 7 individuals) – Focus groups

In planning the outreach, we identi-fied eight to ten different sectors of the Eritrean diaspora here in Toronto , Hamilton , and Ottawa so that our sample would be as representative as possible. We were considerate of age, class, gender, linguistics (the survey was translated to Arabic), religious, regional, residential, educational dif-ferences when choosing our sample. For reporting demographics of the study, we classified our age groups as 16-34; 35- 54; and 55+ as well as incorporating their marital status and birthplace. The focus groups included people from all of these age groups as

despite obstacles. But these obstacles can be lessened if the older genera-tion like us, shares our stories”. Not only will these young kids have an opportunity to gain a winning start, but

in all aspects of research and proj-ect coordination have provided me with a good understanding about the overall organization of the project, community perceptions of our work, researcher and youth perceptions, and the reception of our work by people unrelated to the project. In this arti-cle, I will identify the risks we have taken in conducting this study and then I will describe some of our mod-est gains.

Timeline, Logistics, and Getting the Community Involved

We had five very busy people (ei-ther working full-time or in school) who had the goal of executing this project within eight weeks. Since it was a “participatory” research proj-ect, we had to really work hard at facilitating meaningful community involvement. We had just formed the Eritrean Youth Coalition (EYC)– a newly formed action-based coalition encompassing youth from different existing Eritrean youth groups in To-ronto –and we thought that this would be an excellent first project for us to do. EYC members, Arsema Berhane, Fnan Desta, Abreheit Gebretsadik, Dahab Hagos, Mereb Hagos, Sara Said, Sammy Sebhatu, Aman Sium, Yafet Tewelde, and Shewhat Zeru represent various political and reli-gious aspects of the Eritrean diaspora

well as “women-only” focus groups in order to more clearly articulate what gender-based differences may exist with respect to community in-volvement, conflict, and peacebuild-ing in our community.

In terms of getting the community involved, we encountered differ-ent perceptions of the project. Some of these were very encouraging and supportive and others warned us to proceed with caution because to sum-marize, “Eritreans are not ready to be researched”. What I can say with confidence is that we were very sen-sitive to the different views coming from political and religious groups in our community. This is a good thing because according to the sur-vey responses, participants identified politics/personality differences as the number one reason we have conflict in our community. Furthermore, we asked the question: “How does the community deal with conflict?” and the number one response was that we “Don’t know how to deal with it.” The second highest response was that we “Avoid” dealing with it.

Some Modest GainsI think the gains made through this project were modest but important. I feel hopeful about the interest this project generated as well as the de-

(from left to right) Helen, Tsehay, Kisanet, Daniel and Shewhat

It is not unusual to feel sad or de-pressed from time to time. Sadness is a normal reaction to loss, life’s strug-gles, or injured self-esteem. Some-times, however, these feelings are so continually intense that they interfere with one’s ability to think, work, eat, sleep, enjoy being with others, or care for one’s self. When someone expe-riences a debilitating depression and feels unable to do anything about it, other people need to pay attention, even if the depressed person does not reach out for help. Depression has many different faces. You probably know people with sto-ries similar to these:• Sam lost his job due to downsizing. At first, he distributed his résumés and did a lot of job-hunt-ing, but now he sits in front of the TV all day, drinking beer. He yells a lot at his wife and kids. • Lenora used to be an active senior citizen until her husband died. Then her medical condition became worse. Now she is a virtual shut-in who keeps her curtains closed and only goes out for doctors’ appoint-ments. • Lucy is a single working mom with young children. Her fam-ily lives in another province. The only people she knows even slightly are her colleagues at work. She isn’t sleeping well. She is so tired she can barely move and it’s getting harder for her to focus on her job or kids. • John works at home. He has no social contact or diversion. He works all the time, but recently he has become so tense that he finds it dif-ficult to concentrate on his work. Depression is an internal “stress state.” To an outsider, the symptoms seem to represent a form of either agi-tation or withdrawal. But inside, each depressed person experiences the condition differently. The severity of symptoms varies with the individual and over time. Some people exhibit a few of the following symptoms. Oth-ers may have many: • Persistent sad, anxious or “empty” mood • Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism • Feelings of guilt, worth-lessness, helplessness • Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex • Decreased energy, fatigue • Difficulty concentrating, remembering and making decisions • Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping • Appetite and/or weight loss or overeating and weight gain • Restlessness, irritability • Persistent physical symp-toms that do not respond to treat-ment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain • Thoughts of death or sui-cide, suicide attempts (Source: National Institute of Mental Health)The symptoms of depression create a

buffer between others and us, thereby diminishing both the quantity and quality of social interaction. Depres-sion isolates us, disables us, and can contribute to deteriorating physical and emotional health. Suicidal thoughts are the most seri-ous symptom of depression and must always be taken seriously. If you or someone you know is demonstrating any of the following warning signs, seek professional help right away: • thoughts or talk of death or suicide; • thoughts or talk of self-harm or harm to others; • giving away prized posses-

sions or a sudden lifting of depressed mood (this is often an indication that a decision to commit suicide has been reached). Grace Cherian is a Toronto-based freelance writer and editor who spe-cializes in mental health issues. Her website address is www.graceche-rian.com.

Signs & Symptoms of Depression

ing, in helping me translate the non-Unicode letters to Unicode format so that it can be easily read by using common software such as Microsoft Word and portable document format (PDF) which makes publishing the book a lot easier. The next challenge was to find a publisher/distributor. Due to the limited target audience, it was difficult to find a publisher so I decided to self-publish the book and promote it myself within the Eritre-an community. I would like to thank Meftih in helping me to promote the book. The motivation for preparing the book was to make sure that the book, which was started by my father 25 years ago, would be published and become available to Tigrinya speak-ers worldwide. He had already col-lected over 4,000 proverbs and writ-ten them by hand. One of his wishes before he passed away was to see the book in print. I thought that was mo-tivation enough to continue the work and bring it into publication. The lack of such a comprehensive book which summarizes our forefathers’ culture was evident two or three decades ago and as more and more Eritreans migrate out of Eritrea, they will not have direct access to their heritage and this book will help them in some way to reconnect to their roots. Meftih: What advice do you have for our young brothers and sisters? Dr. Ermias: The advice I would like give is not to take anything for grant-ed. It is probably easier for first gen-eration immigrants not to take things for granted as they can remember

the conditions and facilities or lack of them that motivated them to im-migrate in search of a better standard of life. We need to instil this drive and motivation in our children who are born abroad and help them to understand that they are very privi-leged to have access to good edu-cation, free medical attention, and job opportunities. We have to seize these opportunities and become suc-cessful in life. A few of us plan or dream to go back ‘home’ one day so we live our lives here as if we are about to go back at any minute. A re-cent study showed that only two in ten emigrated out of Canada and the majority do so within the first year of arrival. So if you have been here for more than a year and have chil-dren, the chances of your going back ‘home’ are almost non-existent. We therefore need to live like a resident and citizen and have a long-term plan (such as housing and pension) in our host countries. Meftih: Is there anything else you would like to add? Dr. Ermias: I would like to thank Meftih for this opportunity and I wish our brothers and sisters a suc-cessful life. I am fortunate enough to have lived in Africa, Europe, and North America and visited a host of other countries. I have yet to find a country better than Canada with its social justice system, racial har-mony, standard of living, etc. We are among the lucky few to have had the opportunity to be here and contribute significantly to the advancement of our society.

Thank you!

The chances of getting seriously ill in your lifetime are quite high. Did you know that one in four Canadians will be diagnosed with a critical illness by age 65?1

Imagine if you become sick and find yourself in one of the following situa-tions:

needing to take a year off work to recover from cancer, stroke, or heart attack; needing to travel outside the country to access alternative health care; your spouse needs to take time off work for an extended period to take care of your child, who has a condition like cystic fibrosis or juvenile diabetes; or needing financial assistance for the rest of your life because you are disabled. You may believe that the federal and provincial governments will take care of you in any or all of these situations. The reality is that the Canada Health Act and group insurance plans don’t cover these expenses.

You may also believe that a bank will lend you money. But is that realistic? If you don’t have collateral to back up the loan and adequate income to prove you can make the loan payments, then the chances of receiving a loan are slim.

Many Canadians say they’d use their RRSPs to pay for these expenses. Con-sider these cost estimates associated with a critical illness2:

Wheelchair Manual $450 - 6,000 Home care Bed $800 - 3,000 Private nursing Per hour $25 - 50 Home renovations Ramp $300 - 1,000 Van conversion Wheelchair access $13,000 - 20,000

As you can see, expenses could severely decrease or even wipe out your RRSP savings, especially when you consider how quickly private nursing care adds up over a year.

More and more Canadians are buying critical illness insurance to protect their finances. If your child, your spouse, or you are insured under this kind of poli-cy and suffer a covered critical illness, such as cancer, a heart attack, a stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), cystic fibrosis (CF), Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and many other conditions, you would receive a lump sum payment depending on the plan you choose. The payout can be between $10,000 and $2 million.

Another benefit usually available with critical illness insurance is the return of premium benefit. This benefit provides for the return of a portion or the entire premium paid, under certain terms, even if a critical illness benefit is not pay-able. For example, if the person insured under the policy doesn’t survive the qualifying period for the covered illness, you as owner could still receive a portion of or all the premiums. Also, if you pay premiums for 25 years and the insured person doesn’t suffer a covered critical illness, then you may receive every dollar you paid.

Who will pay if I get sick?

The Canadian public may turn the tables and punish him for calling another national election before the year is up and spending valuable tax-payers’ money. Not to mention forc-ing people out twice to elect politi-cians in the cold and three times in the case of Londoners over a very short period of time. This will trans-late into reduced interest in politics. People do not like politicians who play games. Harper could well wait for at least two months before calling this by-election to make it a full year before Canadians go to another elec-tion to choose a national leader. The last federal election was forced by

the very person whose aspiration at the time was to be in power. It didn’t even matter to him if it was a minor-ity government. He was going to get out of that forced election on January 23, 2006. Now before the ink is dry from the last election, Harper is pre-pared to frustrate the Canadian public and satisfy his political ego by calling a national election and squander $275 million of taxpayers’ money. This money which will be spent unneces-sarily could be used for the gun reg-istry which Harper fiercely criticizes as being too expensive. But no, he would rather squander over a quarter of a billion dollars instead of allocat-ing the funds in such a way that they can best benefit Canadians.

Meftih’s WordEditorial

mara Chamber of Commerce so I moved to Asmara . I grew up in As-mara , mostly around Comboni Col-lege and ‘Neishto Gegiret’. I attend-ed Comboni College private school up to Grade 12 and moved on to the University of Asmara (U of A) to study biology and chemistry. After I graduated from the U of A, I was retained as faculty member and later awarded a scholarship to study plant physiology at the University of Read-ing (U of R) in the United Kingdom . My graduation from U of R coin-cided with Eritrean independence so I decided to go back to Eritrea and re-join the U of A which was just about to start its first academic year in the newly independent country. Two years later, a third of the uni-versity faculty were, in my opinion, unfairly dismissed so I offered my resignation to the president of the U of A and returned to the U.K. to continue my education. In the U.K. I applied to many organizations for funding (about 200 letters) and was finally awarded a scholarship by the Society for the Protection of Science and Learning and the Africa Edu-cational Trust. During my studies, I also worked for an insurance broker and the British Broadcasting Corpo-ration (BBC) which allowed me to fund my education. Towards the end of my Ph.D., I was retained by the U of R to work on mathematical mod-els of biological systems. In 2003, I was offered an adjunct professor-ship position at the University of Guelph, Ontario, which I accepted. Recently, I was encouraged to apply for a distinguished Canada Research Chair position at the University of Manitoba (the U of M) in Winnipeg . The U of M has offered me an As-sociate Professorship position as Canada Research Chair in Modeling Sustainable Agricultural Systems and I will start my new position in April 2007 after it is approved by the federal government. The Canada Research Chair program was estab-lished by the federal government in 2000 to help Canadian universities attract and retain excellent faculty who are considered to become world leaders in their fields and receive $100,000 a year in research funding for ten years. Meftih: You made us proud by get-ting a Young Scientists Award in Au-gust. Can you explain to me about the award and how you managed to win? Dr. Ermias: Thank you for your kind words. This award which is spon-sored by Pfizer Animal Health Can-ada recognizes the achievements of members of the research community in Canada and overseas who have demonstrated excellence in any area of animal science. Nominations are sent to the Canadian Society of Ani-mal Scientists and a committee se-lects winners based on contributions to animal science and publication records of nominees. It is indeed a pleasure to win such a distinguished award and it is also good that my peers have acknowledged my work in such a way. Meftih: How will this award influ-ence your life? What does this award mean to you? Dr. Ermias: In research as in many other areas, networking is vital. In most developed countries research funds are awarded by governmen-tal or non-governmental agencies where the reputation of a scientist’s achievements is important. After this award, I believe that my work will gain a wider audience which means

that it will be better used and better known within the scientific commu-nity. This will make my search for research funds a lot easier because most of the committee members would have been exposed to the work I am doing and also feel secure that the funding will be used appro-priately with tangible outcomes. Personally, the award means a lot to me because of all the hard work in-volved in writing a grant, conducting research, mentoring students, and publishing scientific papers which has been acknowledged by people who know what it takes to move ahead in the business. It is a stamp of approval for a job well done. The award will serve as an encourage-ment for future work. Meftih: What challenges do you face at work? How do you overcome them? Dr. Ermias: As an academic, the chal-lenges are to keep oneself above wa-ter because there are so many things that come at you and need your at-tention. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the amount of work and lose fo-cus. My whiteboard is my saviour. I overcome the pressures by forward planning and organizing my students and research associates. Every morn-ing I prioritize what needs to be done for that day, week, or month and get on with it. I also make sure that those who work with me are on course to meet deadlines. Meftih: What inspired you to study agriculture? Dr. Ermias: I know it is not logical for a ‘city boy’ to end up studying agriculture. Even people who grew up on the farm can’t wait to get out and do something else. For me it started with a fascination with bio-logical systems and my final year project at the University of Asmara was to find a type of barley that could resist drought and not be attacked by disease. It was interesting to see dif-ferent varieties of barley responding differently to varying environmental conditions. It had very practical ap-plications and I wanted to continue in that field. That led to working in plant physiology for my M.Sc. Dur-ing that time I also liked the use of mathematics in biology so I took that as my main subject to do a doctoral degree. Meftih: You developed mathemati-cal models for pest management and dairy cow and poultry nutrition while you were doing your Ph.D. Can you explain to me the contribu-tion of your findings in the field of animal science? Dr. Ermias: Animal nutrition and especially ruminant (dairy cow) nu-trition is a very complex subject. As most people know, cows have four stomachs and there are hundreds of microbial organisms that work together with the cow with mutual benefits that change grass (which you and I can’t do anything with) to products such as milk and meat. Un-fortunately, that process also yields products that are harmful to our en-vironment such as greenhouse gases. The challenge is to find a good bal-ance between productivity and pol-lution. While part of this involves testing new feeds, it would be a bit much to test a thousand different feeds–even for someone used to that sort of work. Luckily, advanced mathematical modeling allows us to predict what will happen when dif-

ferent feeds are fed to different ani-mals. My most practical contribution is changing the way farmers use feed in the United Kingdom. While work-ing in England , I was part of a con-sortium that was responsible for de-veloping a new method of feeding animals to meet the requirements to produce milk without harming the environment. That work has been approved by the Ministry of Agricul-ture and now every farmer in Eng-land uses the guidelines that came out of that work. I am now working with the Ontario Ministry of Agri-culture and Rural Affairs to develop similar guideline for swine farmers. Meftih: You have published thee books, eleven book chapters, and fifty papers in refereed journals. You also serve as a reviewer for ten in-ternational scientific journals. You seem to be doing an outstanding amount of work. How do you man-age to accomplish this great success? What’s your secret? Dr. Ermias: There is no secret except organization and planning. As I indi-cated before, one needs to plan ahead and manage time effectively. I also interact with a lot of my colleagues especially in the U.K. , the Nether-lands , and the U.S. and collaborate in writing books, book chapters, and scientific papers. So it is a matter of forward planning and collaboration with colleagues. Meftih: Can you tell me about the three books you have already pub-lished? Dr. Ermias: The first book that was published was Using Science to Meet Consumers’ Needs in Dairy and it was based on an international conference held in the U.K. to ad-dress the problem of environmental pollution coming from animals. The book was published by Nottingham University Press and contains 218 pages. The second book is called Modelling Approaches in Nutrient Digestion and Utilization in Farm Animal. The book was based on an international conference held in the Netherlands to address the use of mathematics in predicting responses in animals and the different methods available to scientists to achieve their goals of predicting nutrient respons-es. The book was published by CABI International ( Oxford ) and has 415 pages. And the third book was Math-ematical Modelling in Animal Nutri-tion. This book summarizes the vari-ous mathematical approaches used by scientists worldwide as it applies to current animal nutrition problems. The book will come out soon and CABI International ( Oxford ) is the publisher. Meftih: What were your main chal-lenges in publishing Traditional and Modern Tigrinya Proverbs? What motivated you to prepare this book? Dr. Ermias: The main challenge in publishing the book of proverbs was to find appropriate software to input the more than 5,000 proverbs in-cluded in the book. In the late 1990s geez script did not have Unicode (international standard) so it was a challenge to get it into a computer. The next challenge was to translate the letters into a Unicode format and I thank Efrem Habtesellasie, a Toronto-based computer expert and pioneer of computerized geez writ-

Last month, the University of Peace , which was estab-lished by the United Nations (UN), held a conference aimed at peace building. The core objective of the con-ference was to explore and stimulate a dialogue on how immigrants could play a crucial role in peacebuilding and development by using the capacity of a diaspora as a cornerstone. Selam Peacebuilding Network of Eritrea , Yong diplomat of Ethiopia , Afghan, Colombia , and Jamaica presented the results of their news research.

History shows that a diaspora is easily affected with conflicts arise in its homeland. It creates division and animosity in its host country simply through the repro-duction of the violent conflict created in the homeland. Instead of playing a significant role in alleviating the crisis, it becomes part of the problem. Some escalate the conflict by siding with one and condemning the other. As a consequence, the crisis isn’t immediately resolved. Very few benefit from the polarized relationship of the community while most people become victimized.

A diaspora never rescues itself from being victimized either. Its progress is hindered. It doesn’t integrate well into the society it lives in and it doesn’t march with the economics and politics of the host country. The wheel of life of most of the diaspora is seized by ill-minded people who don’t appreciate peace. The majority be-comes powerless and does not act effectively here or there. In brief, most of the diaspora hasn’t played a sig-nificant role so far.

This conference seemed to provide a direction for the diaspora. It created a wonderful forum for debate and discussion based on the research of five new studies of visible minority immigrants. It confirmed that the only solution for any misunderstanding arising back home or in the disapora can be achieved through the active in-volvement of each individual. As the diaspora attains a better economy, political structure, education, and facil-ities in the host country, it can become more effective.

Therefore, we will need to support Selam Peacebuilding Network that represented the Eritrean disapora. They are the engine of positive moves in building peace in our community. Showing enthusiastic support of their initiative is one step toward peacebuilding. So, let’s share our challenges and ideas with them. Let’s echo peace repeatedly. Let’s work for it relentlessly. Then peace will be our tattoo and development will be our daily agenda.
