Rotary Day a Big Success!

We had clear skies for a busy Rotary weekend in D7190! Our Saratoga Springs club hosted their annual Home Show at the City Center. Big crowds and lots of friendly Rotary faces were seen visiting with show vendors and watching the cooking demonstrations! Nice touch to include the Saratoga Springs police department that offered kids a free ‘identification card’! The Saratoga club took advantage of our PR grant and had some of the new ‘pull up’ signs at their Rotary Information table, drawing the attention of folks at the show!

Later that day, Rotarians ventured further north to Glens Falls where we celebrated 110 years of Rotary at the Adirondack Flames Hockey Game! Our Glens Falls club hosted this annual event and we showcased Rotary to the community! Rotary was prominently featured as fans entered the arena with a big ShelterBox display, Rotary information table, and Rotary hosting the 50/50 raffle! The standing room only crowd raised $420 that benefits our Rotary Foundation and specifically will provide grant money for our clubs as well as immunizations for kids as part of PolioPlus!

Sharing the impact of an ‘event’ – telling stories about the fun & camaraderie of being a Rotarian, these are the moments to share with your friends and colleagues that may consider joining Rotary. Thank you for all that you do as a Rotarian! DG David

This year our Presidents-Elect (PETS) training started with the Rotary Learning Institute which was Phase I of a 4 Phase district program coupled with the multi-district PETS. The remaining portions of the program are outlined below. It is important for presidents-elect to attend these sessions to ensure that they are prepared for their responsibilities as president. One of the desired outcomes of this training is that PE's will, at the Multi-District PETS, input their club goals for the coming year. 2015 Shenendehowa Rotary Scholarship

Shenendehowa Rotary is accepting applications now for a $500 Scholarship that is awarded annually to a graduating senior in the Shenendehowa School District community. The scholarship will be awarded to the applicant who is judged to display the best combination of dedication to school, community, work and plans for the future.

Students currently attending Shenendehowa High School should contact the guidance office for an application and submission deadlines. The application form and deadline for those applicants not attending Shenendehowa HS can be found at www.shenrotary.org.

family-friendly event. Spouses are encouraged to attend, participate in activities and enjoy all that the Schoharie Valley has to offer.

Friday is planned as a day of service. We will be coordinating work groups based on interests and abilities, with something for everyone. Lunch is being served courtesy of the generous sponsorship Curtis Lumber. You won’t want to miss the special and festive Friday Night in Middleburgh with open air live music, samples, tastes, eats, sweets and treats, farmer’s market, exhibits, specials, tours and more. This promises to be a very fun night.

Gift of Life Arrival

Our current Gift of Life Child, seven month old

Anahi ,came to us from Honduras. She had surgery to repair a congenital heart defect February 25, 2015. She was accompanied by her mother Delmy (Yolandy) and translator Karla. Surgery was successfully done at Albany Medical Hospital. They will be here until the end of March.

When released from the hospital, Anahi and mom will stay with a host family (John and Susan Richter) in Albany. The Gift of Life Program is working in concert with Samaritan’s Purse. There will be time for Rotarians and Samaritan’s Purse Volunteers to show the family some of the highlights of New York State and give them a taste of local cuisine, shopping and sights. They will return to Honduras the end of March.

The Rotary Club of Delmar Gives the Un-Donated!

The Delmar Rotary Club contacted folks at local charities during the holiday season and asked, what goods are you NOT getting from donations. The Capital City Rescue Mission responded loudly and clearly that they hardly ever receive, and always are in need of, personal hygiene items. The Mission can not distribute opened or used, or even gently used, toothbrushes, underwear, etc. Those items have to be new.

The Delmar Club sprang into action and launched a drive to collect the Un-Donated!

In January, the Club delivered enough toiletries and personal items to fill three refrigerator boxes. While collecting the Un-Donated folks gave us coats, blankets, and warm weather gear which was delivered to the Rescue Mission.

We are proud of our accomplishment so far but THE NEED IS STILL THERE. The rescue mission is still in need:

District 7190 Sends Vocational Training Team to Bangladesh

In 2012, after the successful completion of a

matching grant project between Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake , Granville and District 7190 with R.C. Dhaka West of Bangladesh to cover 550 cataract operations, Captain Shafi of R.C. Dhaka West joined then Foundation Chair Anne Cargile and DG Dan Stec and representatives from Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake and Granville to explore if other projects in Bangladesh might be feasible. Out of such discussion came two ideas; equipment for an additional operating room in an ENT hospital in Dhaka and a medical mission (or “VTT” in Rotary parlance). The ENT equipment project was completed in June 2013, while the VTT project took another eighteen months to organize as a district sponsored project under Rotary’s “Future Visions” mode of operation. Such VTT was planned to teach internationally recognized practices for the care of the mother and newborn at Kumudini Hospital, sixty miles outside the capital Dhaka. (Kumudini Hospital was visited in 2011 by Rey Whetten of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake and Steve Williams of Granville during their visit to Bangladesh as guests of R.C. Dhaka West related to the above mentioned cataract removal project).

The international community has set “Millennium Development Goals” to reduce under 5 year old mortality by 2/3, and to reduce maternal mortality by 75% by 2015. In order to accomplish this, the World Health Organization and others have developed specific training courses for midwives and other health providers in developing nations to learn how to resuscitate a newborn who is not breathing, how to stabilize a newborn’s temperature and recognize signs of serious infections, and to prevent and treat maternal hemorrhage after birth.

These courses, called “Helping Babies Breathe” (HBB), “Essential Care for Every Baby” (ECEB) and “Helping Mothers Survive—Bleeding after Birth (HMS BAB) use ingeniously designed manikins and simple

but effective teaching tools. Each learner leaves the course with new skills, and with the equipment they will need to use in the field, which is designed to be sterilized simply by boiling, and can be used repeatedly. They also receive heavily illustrated booklets and posters to use to reinforce the learning.

District 7190 and Granville, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, Glens Falls and Lake George Rotary Clubs, coordinated by the Granville Club, with the support of the Rotary Club of Dhaka West, Bangladesh, for in-country coordination, sent a Two Member VTT to Bangladesh to teach these courses to instructors in the midwifery school at Kumudini Hospital in Mirzapur, Tangail. Dr. Kathleen Braico of Queensbury, NY, leader of the Team taught HBB and ECEB, and Nurse Umma Amina of Vallejo, CA taught HMS BAB. They arrived at the hospital on January 6th and, over a period of eight days, trained the instructors at Kumudini how to use the manikins, and how to teach the course material to their students. This “train the trainer” approach guarantees that there will remain a cadre of trained instructors who can continue to share this life saving information with all their students. In addition, Rotary had purchased and donated the manikins and teaching materials from China to Kumudini for use in future teaching. In this way, Rotary will continue to save lives of women and children in a country that is half a world away for many years to come.

It is gratifying that at the end of the course both the hospital and the two team members have expressed satisfaction with the training given. Furthermore, there being two additional medical issues for newborns and their mothers for which training will become available (Essential Care for the Small Baby and Helping Mothers Survive Hypertension in Pregnancy and Preeclampsia) both the hospital and the team members have stated their interest for such topics to be covered by a future VTT

As shown below, at the conclusion of the training program, a Closing Ceremony for teachers and trainers alike was held at the Hospital premises.
