Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby studied architecture together at The Royal College of Art in London and established BarberOsgerby in 1996. Later, in 2001, they also founded Universal Design Studio their architecture and interior design practice. Over the past ten years, Edward and Jay have worked across a wide range of disciplines to create everything from furniture, lighting, household products, restaurants, shops, drinks bottles and electronic products for companies based all around the world. Edward and Jay were awarded the Jerwood Prize for Applied Arts in 2004 and were made Royal Designers for Industry in 2007.

BarberOsgerby has since been developing collections for leading manufacturers including Flos, Vitra, Venini, Magis, Authentics, Swarovski and Established & Sons, as well as continuing their work in private and public commissions.

Both Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby lecture at numerous international events and design schools, including at Ecal, Switzerland and the Vitra Design Museum. Their work is held in museum permanent collections around the world including the Design Museum, London; the V&A Museum, London; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago and the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

In 2008, we were asked to produce a limited edition of tables for Established & Sons LIMITED gallery in London. The project was called Iris.

Iris

Page 16: Barber Osgerby Project Stories for the Design Museum

Our starting point is usually to make sketches and models of our work. For this project, however, the process started with colour studies...

Iris

Page 17: Barber Osgerby Project Stories for the Design Museum

We decided on which colours to use by laying out the colour chips in sequence

We then went on to produce drawings on the computer to lay out the components of the tables

Page 20: Barber Osgerby Project Stories for the Design Museum

Once we had decided on the design, individual, machined-aluminium sections were produced to make-up the tables.

Iris

Page 21: Barber Osgerby Project Stories for the Design Museum

The individual aluminium parts were then anodised to produce the different coloured sections of each table. This involves treating the metal then dying and sealing it - in much the same way as developing a photographic film with chemicals.

With the help of our sister studio, Universal Design Studio, we also work on architectural projects such as this one for high street fashion brand, H&M.

We also create material studies like these to show the different effects light will have on a building - in this case, the perforations in the pleated facade are backlit at night to create this effect...

We made our design flexible so that it can be adapted for each individual site around the world and used on buildings internally and externally.
