Additional volunteers may signify their intention to help by signing one of the signup sheets Steve will have at rehearsals during September. According to Steve, there are jobs for about 20 to 25 more people to fill the staffing needs of the various functions. In addition, he will need 10 to 12 people to bring desserts to cap off what should be a topnotch event.

All articles, not accompanied by a byline, have been written by the editor and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the members nor of the officers of the chapter. Opposing points of view are welcome and encouraged.

MISSION STATEMENT The Nassau Mid-Island Chapter, in order to enhance the enjoyment of music in the barbershop style for our chapter members and our audiences, participates in both quartet and chorus singing as a means of experiencing the thrill of barbershop singing and helping others to do the same. Our aim is also to support the Barbershop Harmony Society and the Mid-Atlantic District in their efforts to perpetuate our art form, to warmly welcome other singers into our hobby, and to contribute to the cultural quality of our community through our charitable activities.

PRESIDENT GEORGE’S SPACESeptember Song

As I’ve often mentioned before, one of the things I find most enjoyable about this hobby is discovering how many like-minded men there are in our region who enjoy making music together. That is why I try to attend as many district events as I can and encourage our members to do so as well.

Much as I love being with all of you every week, I get a special kick

out of meeting members of other chapters, seeing how they do things, and maybe picking up a few pointers that might help us. For example, our bumper stickers, which have proven most worthwhile, grew out of an idea that both Bob Roth and I had heard discussed at a Leadership Training session. We brought it back, merged it with an existing proposal that Bob Heim had originally made, and found a very helpful recruiting tool.

As of this writing, ten of us will be going with our wives, or significant others, to Lancaster, PA, for the District Convention and contest on October 2 and 3. I can hardly wait!

Next month we don’t even have to travel to interact with barbershoppers that we don’t see every week. On October 20, our regular meeting will be devoted to an interchapter get-together. We don’t yet know how many men from how many chapters will be there, but we do know that Steve Brausa, our Program Vice President, has much to do to make it a success. He can’t do it alone. Please help him out by volunteering for one of his teams. Whether or not you’re needed, we ALL should think of ourselves as a HOSPITALITY team and do whatever we can to make our guests feel welcome.

The ad hoc chorus being organized by a member of the North Brookhaven Chapter, Richard Fuchs, to commemorate the Gettysburg Address in Washington, D.C., in November is another wonderful opportunity to share our love of singing with fellow songsters.

The big one, of course, is the Society’s International Convention. Due to time and travel constraints, I’ve never been to one, but next year it will be in Philadelphia! Why, that’s so close you could almost come home every night! I don’t imagine I’ll do that, but right now I definitely do plan to be there from June 28 to July 4, 2010. Maybe we could get a whole group together and go as a block. There’s plenty of time, so think about it!

Yours in harmony,

George

L.I. Harmonizers at work and at play this summerAT WORK AT PLAY

TAKING COMFORT IN THEIR SURROUNDINGS: Program Vice President Steve Brausa makes announcements at the summertime rehearsal home of the Long Island Harmonizers at the Calvary Protestant Church in Baldwin, where air-conditioned and acoustical comfort are provided during July and August.

IT HAD TO BE HUE: “Color us happy,” say (left to right) Wayne Lazar, Bess Bell, Gene Kammerer and Mary Jane Debar with hosts Hal and Lois Verity at their Patio Party that brought together Mid-Island chapter members, supportive wives and others for an afternoon of barbershop singing, good food and conviviality.

A LITTLE BIT OF PLAY AND WORK

POINTERS: Guest conductor Larry Bombeck (left) and Nassau Mid-Islandʼs Assistant Director Steve Stojowski recently “found the time” during a rehearsal break to chat about the winning ways of Larryʼs quartet, ʻRound Midnight. “Pointers” were, in fact, what the evening was all about. Bombeck offered a number of them concerning conducting techniques as well as their application in interpretation.

SEE WHAT CHIZʼS DAUGHTER SAW!

DAPPER DANS OF DISNEYLAND, too young to be the original quartet of the same name, regales the crowds in California, including Chizʼs daughter, Marsha, and grand daughter, Tory. What great taste they have in music!

Barbershop Education from The Note Dispenser, David Haase, Editor

The internet is a great place to learn more about our barbershop craft. Here are a couple of examples:Music Ed Ted’s Website www.musicedted.info

This site was developed by Ted Norton, a retired music professor and fellow barbershopper. He covers topics ranging from sight singing, singing better through register understanding (does that sound familiar?), vocal health, warm-ups, etc. Check it out, you may be surprised how much what he’s telling us is what we’re being told on Tuesday nights by Maurice.Editor’s Note: Ed lists the following nine website topics that I find inviting, to say the least:

Music Ed Tedʼs WebsitesMy E-Mail: [email protected]

1. Music Reading for Singers-Sight Singing

2. Inaccurate Singing - Children & Adults

3. Memorizing Music4. Singing Better Thru Register Understanding

5. Singing Better Thru Vowel & Consonant Understanding

6. Intonation - Singing In Tune

7. Understanding Chord Members8. Vocal Health, Warm-Ups & Singing Craft

9. Learning to Harmonize

Ted goes on to say, “Because I feel I have gained some insight into some topics that others rarely seem to have, I thought perhaps some would find these topics of value. I would appreciate any comments at all about what works and what doesnʼt work, and how I could make the presentations better.”

Owning the Stage www.owningthestage.comThis site is a blog, written by Tom Metzger of Realtime, with advice on Stage Presence. I’m new at this site, so all I can say is get on his homepage and start reading.

Barbershop Radio:

Pandora Radio www.pandora.comOne of the best internet radio sites on the web, in

my opinion. Log in and type in the music you want to hear. If you type “barbershop”, it will come back with a selection of songs. Pick one of a group you like, and Pandora will build you a personalized playlist of songs for that group or other groups that are similar in style. You can save your selection and the next time you log in, Pandora will bring up your preferred songs automatically.

YouBarbershop www.youbarbershop.comThis is a subscription fee site, but you can listen

to a PodCast (radio show) for free by clicking on the YouCast link at the top of the home page. There you can download the latest and archived podcast shows, featuring Mike and Brian from Metropolis , interviewing many of the big names in barbershop. They also provide a bit of news of what’s going on in the Society as well as exclusive behind-the-scenes interviews at International. It’s interesting listening and helps you to keep up with what’s going on in our hobby. Just make sure when you download that you open the file with your player (i.e., Windows Media Player) and not save the file to your computer. They are usually 36 to 70 megabytes in size.

Well, that should be enough to get you started and keep you plenty occupied. If you run into a website or something interesting about our hobby online, let me know about it. Happy surfing!

The Editor’s Follow-up to the foregoing article from The Note Dispenser

Out of curiosity, I downloaded Music Ed Ted’s websi te and found the subject mat ter very interesting. In particular, I examined Item #4 - “ S i n g i n g B e t t e r T h r o u g h R e g i s t e r Understanding.” (See next page.) I found the article to be suitable for both the professional singer as well as for a barbershopping hobbyist. Bulletin editors are always on the lookout for material that is both interest ing and relevant to barbershop enthusiasts.

Accordingly, I am making plans to serialize Ted Norton’s articles for as long you, our readers, respond favorably.

MEMBERSHIP! MEMBERSHIP! MEMBERSHIP! This Is An Emergency! A Call to Arms!

This headline banner is RED for a reason. The Barbershop Harmony Society has addressed the problem of its declining membership in seemingly over a hundred ways over the past four or five years--to little or no avail. Today (August 26) 487 chapter secretaries received an appeal from Executive Secretary Ed Watson, excerpts of which follow: Dear Chapter Secretary,

I am writing you today to both introduce the Societyʼs new Director of Education, and also to begin a dialogue with you concerning declining membership in the Society and what the Society President, the Society Board of Directors, the Membership Growth Task Force, the Membership Committee, and the Society staff all recognize as our number one Aim--membership growth. Note the word, dialogue; your input is welcomed.Columns in the Harmonizer, articles on the Harmonet, in LiveWire, and elsewhere continue to stress this most important of facts: it is at the chapter level that the Society stands or falls. In the coming months, you will see many new innovations from the Society and your district leadership, but all of it depends on the chapterʼs ability to use them. We can help, but only YOU can prevent membership loss. Hereʼs a simple first step: a review of your chapterʼs roster in Aptify. As secretary, you have the ability at your fingertips to see who is a member in good standing, who is coming up on renewal, and who is overdue, how much they owe, and how long theyʼve been in arrears. Simply review that roster and pick up the phone, checking on the member and why heʼs lapsing. Often thatʼs all it takes. We will soon be restructuring and distributing a chapter reporting tool to allow you as chapter secretary to brag a bit on your chapter ʼs accomplishments and let us know how you are doing. We as a Society rise or fall by our chapters; we must be able to see the basic condition of our chapters, their needs and their desires. To lead this effort, and may other education and training efforts, the Society has hired a new Director of Education, Paul Weitlisbach (Witless-Bach). It is my pleasure to pass the keyboard to him to say a

few words to you about the way forward. Remember, as always, this is a dialogue, and until we get the chapter reporting up and running, you m a y a l w a y s c o n t a c t m e v i a [email protected] and I will respond. Now hereʼs Paul.

Hi, guys,I canʼt tell you how thrilled I am to be a part of the staff that has the privilege to serve the greatest bunch of guys in the world. As Education Director, I promise to do everything in my power to provide you with the tools you need to be the best custodians you can be of our most precious resource--our PEOPLE! Iʼm sure you know we face a tough challenge in the area of recruiting and retention these days. You can really help if youʼll simply take a little time and use one of the on-line tools available to everybody.Hereʼs the issue: A lot of guys are letting their memberships expire. Hereʼs how you can help. Simply remind the guy that is conking up on renewal. Do it in person, give him a call--whatever suits you.

1) Go into EBIZ/CHAPTER MANAGEMENT and you will see a little GREEN message in the 3rd column from the right, when guys are coming up for renewal.

2) When a member actually expires, that little message turns RED.

Itʼs as simple as that! A little personal follow up will go a long way when your members are getting ready for membership renewal.CHEERS!Paul Weitlisbach ([email protected])(615) 673-4148

WHATʼS COOKING - NO. 5

BARBERSHOP HOMINY(from the Massaros)

Go to a diner in the South and, more than likely,

youʼll find hominy (corn soaked to remove the germ and hard shell from the kernels) often served as a cereal (read that hominy grits). Hereʼs a twist from Joe and Nancy Massaro--tasty hominy muffins:

Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1 cup (drained) canned hominy, 2 tablespoons melted butter (and a little more for greasing the muffin pans), 2 eggs (beaten), and finally 1 cup of milk, preferably whole cream style.

Preparation: First, heat the oven to 350 degrees and grease a 10-muffin pan before setting it aside. Then sift the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt in a large bowl before setting it aside as well. Stir the hominy, butter and milk in a medium bowl, then whisk in the eggs. Stir the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients until combined. Fill the muffin pans 3/4 full with batter and place in the oven. Bake until golden and a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean (about 25 minutes for standard muffins). Before removing the muffins cool the pan on a rack.

Then, wait for those around you to sing praises bound to come.
