Barekamavan Village Information

•Located in Tavush Marz – very close to the Azeri border•App. 110 km north of Dilijan•Total population 400 •Total number of students 33 (in 1976, there were 330 students)•Weather is hot in summer and cool in winter which is ideal for agriculture• Land is fertile and using a greenhouse can result in low cost crop. •The villagers have no access to their agricultural lands as they are under the Azeri sniper fire •Old people live on pensions while the youth have no stable income•Many have already emigrated

Project Purpose

- Sustain the presence of the Barekamavan villagers whose village has a high strategic importance for the Armenian Nation

- Raise the morals of our Armed Forces on the border by ensuring the presence of a strong village protecting their back.

- Execute a project which is initially funded by a donation but then refunds itself to target most of the population and even encourage those who have emigrated to return back.

- Provide the villagers with “the net to fish rather then providing them the fish”

- Involve the Diaspora and the Armenian citizens in supporting this strategic village.

- A young and dedicated head of village who wants to work for his village and fully supporting the project.- Dedicated villagers who believe in their land and realize their strategic location- A dedicated expert who will fully get involve at a very low cost- Dedicated project team (manager/coordinators) who are committed to turn this into a successful project on a volunteer basis

Project Details

Since access to the agricultural lands is dangerous due to azeri sniper fire, the project focuses on the individual lands next to the houses of the villagers.The project aims to:

Provide fruitful trees to all villagers (2 for each family) to be planted in their gardens : these are expected to give fruits in 2 years

Provide 100 m2 green houses to the biggest 4 families which are expected to generate an income in 3 months. Some percentage of the income will be used to buy more greenhouses to other families.

Provide professional training to villagers on greenhouse building, farming, crop calculation and sales.

Provide IT related training to youngsters (to be delivered by Macadamian a leading IT Company)

The greenhouses will be planted with tomato and cucumberThe professional training will include: Tomato and Cucumber biological education Greenhouse land preparation Fertilization methods and selection of chemicalsSeedlingIrrigation methods (drip system to save water)Crop protection against known diseasesCrop harvestGreenhouse financials (income/expense)

Project Details: Trees

- On average, 2 trees will be provided to each household in the village-The villagers will be in charge of taking care of the tree (protection and irrigation)- One tree will be fruitful and the other olive (as olive can provide high income in the future)- The villagers will be trained on the plantation and taking care of the tree- This work will be monitored by the project team during the duration of the project.-Some of the trees will be provided for free by ATP (Armenian Tree Project) – one of the leading organizations in Armenia which implements large scale environmental projects.

Project Details: IT Training

-During the course of the project, IT related training will be provided to the youngsters of the village (PC/Internet awareness, GIS awareness, blogging, village website, etc..)- The location of the training will be the school where PCs and Internet connection is available- The trainees will receive corresponding certificates- Young kids from nearby villages will be invited to attend. - The approximate number of those benefiting: 30- The training will be delivered by IT managers from Macadamian – one of the leading IT companies in Armenia with headquarters in Canada. - The training sessions and training material will be delivered on volunteer basis courtesy of Macadamian - Armenia.

- Each household receiving a greenhouse will sign an agreement to pay back 25% of the income of the greenhouse each season to the project team over 2 years.Expected Income from each greenhouse: 360,000 Drams (for 2 seasons)-The paid amounts will be collected to finance more greenhouses to the rest of the families. - Once all families own their greenhouse, the project can be optionally extended to offer the same conditions (greenhouse + 2 trees) to those migrants if they decided to come back permenantly. - During the same period, the owners will be trained on how to save money (25-30% of their income) on building their own 2nd greenhouse to diversify the crop and increase their income. - At the end of the project, all greenhouses will be owned by the villagers thus creating a motivation for them to work hard.
