Dick Whittington 6th – 8th and 11th – 15th December
Dick Whittington is one of the best known and best loved pantomimes. This version, suitable for all the family, follows the time-honoured story of Dick coming to London to make his fortune. Falsely accused of theft he prepares to return home to Gloucestershire, but the bells of London’s churches call him back. He proves his innocence and becomes Lord Mayor of London, makes his fortune and lives happily ever after. The story is based in truth. The real Richard Whittington, born around 1354, was the third son of a wealthy Gloucestershire family and came to London as a young man to become a mercer. He was four times Lord Mayor of London, a member of parliament and a sheriff of London. In his lifetime he financed a number of public projects, such as drainage systems in poor areas of medieval London, and a hospital ward for unmarried mothers. At the age of 42 he married Alice FitzWaryn, the daughter of another wealthy city merchant. Richard Whittington died in 1423. He bequeathed his fortune to form the Charity of Sir Richard Whittington which, nearly 600 years later, continues to assist people in need. Thame Players’ pantomime invariably sells out. Gin and Cheese Tasting Event – Saturday 21st December
On Saturday 21st December we are holding a gin and cheese tasting event at the theatre, hosted by The Deli at No. 5, one of Thame’s favourite speciality food and drinks retailers, who offer an extensive range of delicious deli items sourced from all over the UK. Joe and Hannah of Deli at No. 5 will be pairing three British artisan gins with three British artisan cheeses and inviting the audience to sample them during the evening, as well as talking about them on stage. The refurbishment and reconstruction of the Lower Hall area of the Centre has now been completed and we are all delighted with it. Peter Cullimore, our patron, declared it officially open on the 1st November and our chairman, Alan Turner, gave a speech thanking everybody in the community who had contributed towards the funding of the work. He gave a special thank you to Paul Morgan, the architect, who had not only donated his architectural services free, but had also taken on the role of project manager for the work without charge. He also gave special thanks to some of our major donors, without whom this project would still be on the wish list. Everyone who attended was very impressed with the finishing touches including the colourful pictures and the wonderful new lighting system in the two halls, and the special lighting funded by the War Memorial Trust in the new sensory room for clients who need some time out. The loft space has now been made available for use as a depository which will enable storage of items, such as fans, and old documents to be kept there out of the way. This will enable the halls to be relatively clutter-free. Now the work is complete the younger clients have moved back and the Robinson Hall will be restored to its former size with the removal of the two temporary rooms which helped to house the younger clients. We are hoping to replace the upstairs carpet in the New Year as it has become rather faded and stained. Our wonderful Jinglers Choir stole the show at the ‘Sing it Out’ Charity Concert supporting the Military Wives Choir and stars from the West End at Chalfont St Peter. They also sang at the Risborough Baptist Church and for the Parkinson’s Group in the Community Centre recently and will hopefully be entertaining Tesco customers for a while when we have our Christmas collection there on Friday the 6th December. Some of our elderly clients were taken to Haddenham Garden Centre for a look around and a cup of tea. Three others were taken to RAF Halton recently. Others will be taken to the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury in December for the pantomime. Our younger clients finished their bowling season by trying out Ten Pin bowling and having a meal out. The Princes Centre is hosting the Older People’s Christmas Lunch on Friday 13th December. Anyone in Risborough who lives alone and is 75 or over can attend this free event which is being organised by the Princes Risborough Area Partnership. We would like to gratefully acknowledge a recent donation from the Ammco Charitable Trust who are contributing towards the upgrading of the kitchen at our Bourne End Centre. We also wish to acknowledge the continuing support from a number of local people for which we are very thankful. All donations received from our local residents are specifically used to enhance the experience of the Princes Risborough Centre clients or to help with the refurbishment projects here.
