First of all I want to welcome everyone to The Hive for this evenings match and wish a warm welcome to everyone from Potters Bar Town.

We will look to put ourselves into the First Round with a good result and a good performance this evening.

Tonight we need to play better than we did Saturday, I thought we were okay, but as you know I expect better than that. We handled the ball well and a lot of teams are respecting the way we play by putting men behind the ball. We have to be better at breaking teams down and it is frustrating because we are putting a lot of work into this on the training ground. At 1-0 we gave the opposition a chance to get back into it and we were punished, we have to be ruthless when we create chances, which over recent game we have made plenty. We made enough chances on Saturday and their ‘keeper was man of the match so it obviously could have been a very different afternoon, however we only have ourselves to blame for the final result.

I am trying to make these boys believe that we are a good side and I will never turn away from the fact that I believe we are a good side. Football is made of fine lines and I think we are really close to being a successful side, we have so many good young players coming through here and Saturday is part of the learning process. I am still learning myself and I hope that tonight we will put things right. Let’s get ourselves into the next round before we face two tough away trips at Hartlepool and Harrogate to come over the next week.

It was a nasty injury for Alfie on Saturday, it looks like it isn’t a break but he is in a lot of pain with it. It is a real shame for him and I am gutted for him, the one plus is that it isn’t a break. I just wanted to apologise again that I didn’t come over to the fans at the end of the game, we were all very concerned after Alfie’s injury and so our first thought was to see him.

The spirit in the side is really good and I will say it again, we are really close to building something really good here. We will keep doing everything we can to bring success to this football club, so please stick with us and continue to back me and the boys.

Let’s get ourselves through and keep

building together as one.

Thanks as always for your continued

support!#LetsBeeTogether

Darren

First of all I want to welcome everyone to The Hive for tonight’s game, where our aim is to put things right following a disappointing result on Saturday.

I am gutted for Alfie with his injury, he has all of our support and we hope that he will come back as quickly as possible. Saturday has happened and we need to move on from it and focus on tonight’s game in front of our home fans, thanks for your support Saturday and let me give my apologies that we couldn’t deliver the result that we all wanted. Hopefully tonight we will put everything right with a positive result and performance.

We’re still in the hat, which is important and if we play like we know we can do, we have the chance to test ourselves against Football League opposition in the next round which would be brilliant for everyone at the club. We know Saturday wasn’t our best and we have been in a sticky patch at the moment, but we completely believe that we are not far away from producing results that we all

want, we have made chances in our last few games so we just need be more ruthless at both ends of the pitch.

I want to once again take the chance to thank you for your support this season, you pay your money and put the time into follow us home and away and myself and the rest of the boys really appreciate the effort you put in.

Let’s get the right result this evening and continue

to build as a team.

COME ON YOU BEES!

The foundations for the Mount Grace Old Scholars (Potters Bar) Football Association were laid in spring 1960.

The school’s first team were having a good season, but many of the boys were due to leave at Easter. It was then that Ken Barrett; the P.E. Master of Mount Grace School asked them and old ‘Scholars’ to support him in raising a team.

We were accepted into the Barnet & District League on 29th June 1960. Ken enlisted Bert Wright, the school’s Caretaker and Sven Hammarling and then Bill Venneear. Reserve, 3rd and 4th Teams were added in the following seasons.

In 1965The Barnet & District and Finchley & District Leagues merged to form the North London Combination. By 1967/68 we had won the Premier Division and the Reserves the Division 1 title and were admitted to Division 2 of the Herts County League.

In 1976Bill Venneear and Clive Cavalier stepped down and Peter Waller, then the 3rd

Team manager, was ‘persuaded’ to take over.

In 1978Many recommended the closure of the Club. But we continued and our three sides were relegated. But from the experience grew a desire never to repeat the mistakes again. Micky Holson became Manager and in 1981/82 we were in the Premier Division, as Division One Champions.

Clive Cavalier rejoined in 1979 and with Peter Waller planned the new Clubhouse and changing rooms. Construction started in July 1982 and in six months, with Frank Bentley’s considerable involvement and help from members, the clubhouse opened on the 9th January 1983.

In 1990/91we reached the FA Vase 3rd round, before we came back from a 24 point deficit to win the Herts Senior County League Premier Division and the Aubrey Cup.

We accepted promotion to the South Midlands League and changed our playing name to Potters Bar Town FC, to reflect the growing stature of the club PO

and promote the Town. Don Newman stood down as Chairman after 11 years.

We installed the Floodlight system in 1993, the Youth section was reformed in 1993/94 and FA Cup football came in 1995/96. At the end of that season, Peter Waller stepped down as Secretary, after twenty years, to become Chairman.

To be drawn out of the hat with a home game against Everton was beyond everyone’s wildest dreams. The tie was switched to Goodison Park and, against a team packed with internationals, the sides were separated only by a solitary Kevin Sheedy goal. Over 34,000 people remained in the ground to give the players a rapturous standing ovation.

In 1996/97the South Midlands Premier Division title was won, but we knew there was too much work to do to apply to the Isthmian League.

The following season, 1997/98, the club reached the quarter final of the FA Vase, going down 2-0 to Kidsgrove Athletic, only conceding in the second period of extra time. We were Runners-up in the league, but won the Challenge Trophy and the South Midlands Floodlight Cup. The Reserves went one better, winning Reserve Division One.

In 1998Peter Waller and Eddie Harvey, secured a new 21-year lease on the ground, whilst on the site the old school was demolished, replaced by a new Ladbrooke School, Care Home, new car park and Watkins Rise. Sadly,

we lost Bill Venneear in November 2000, a victim of cancer. The 150 Seater Main Stand was added in May 2001.

For Season 2001/02Steve Smart became Manager and by 2002/03, with Paul Surridge, we achieved 3rd place in the league and won the Herts Charity Shield. The Potters Bar Charity Cup followed in 2003/04, but 2004/05 was the most successful of his 3 year reign, winning four trophies; the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division and the Premier Division Cup, Herts Charity Shield and Potters Bar Charity Cup. The club went on to take the title by sixteen points, remaining unbeaten in the final 19 league matches, including sixteen victories.

Off the pitch, in 6 weeks Club members and Players carried out major improvements and we passed the FA Ground grading and earned promotion to the Southern League Division 1 East for season 2005/06.

Steve Smart stepped down; Kevin Lucas was appointed, and then replaced by Andy Milne. Though we were bottom for six months, we would not give up. Andy Leese agreed to join us in February 2006 and with new players our fortunes changed and we survived relegation, finishing 16th. The club was devastated that season by the death of Ken Woodward, who had spearheaded the ground improvements.

For 2006/07we were moved to the Ryman League Division 1 North. We enjoyed a most successful FA Cup run, losing away by 3-2 to full-time Woking, of the Conference National, in the 4th qualifying round, after wins against Waltham Abbey, Wealdstone, Maldon Town and Margate by 2-1 away. But we won the Herts FA Charity Cup, for the first time, but lost Kevin Wilmot, as Secretary. Andy Leese left in May 2007 and we appointed Steve Browne, though he resigned in December 2008.

In the summer of 2007, a spectators covered area was added and a turnstile block. All four turnstiles have a unique history, as they were all in use at the old Wembley Stadium, until it closed in 2000. Adam Lee was appointed in 2008 and for 5 years served the Club with great distinction and commitment, always improving our league position and reached the Herts Senior Cup Final in 2012/13 for the only time.

O P P O S I T I O N

In May 2010To celebrate our 50th year, many former players returned, including 9 who had played in the very first match in September 1960! Bert Wright, one of our ‘founders’, received the FA 50 years service Award. To commemorate the occasion, the Club reverted to Maroon shirts, the same colours that we wore in June 1960. In January 2012, Bert Wright died at the age of 93, having given the club 52 years of service. In his honour, we renamed the Main stand after him.

For 2013/14 We were back in the Southern League. In late 2013, Adam Lee stepped down, succeeded by Jack Friend, then in early 2015, by Steve Ringrose. Our Free Season Ticket Offer was launched for 2014/15 and made the national press. Sadly we lost Eddie Harvey.

In 2015/16 We reached the semi-final of the League Cup, and then in 2016/17 we made the 4th qualifying round of the F.A. Cup for the second time, including a replay win at Bath City on penalties (our best result against a team from a higher level).

In Summer 2017 The Clubroom was totally refurbished and in August 2018, after raising £100,000 ourselves and 3 years work by John Gibbs, our new Changing Room complex was opened.

For 2017/18 We were back in the Isthmian League Division 1 North. In September 2017, Peter Waller, celebrated 50 years of service to the Club and received an FA Award. Steve Ringrose ‘promoted’ James Duncan to Head Coach and several experienced players arrived.

We started with another successful run in the FA Cup, losing to National South Play Off Finalists Hampton & Richmond Borough, whilst in the FA Trophy we fell to Southern League Premier Division Champions, Hereford, both after replays. We then targeted the Play offs, being 8th in January. However, in our remaining 22 fixtures, we won 15 and drew 5 and came through to take 2nd spot

and promotion, with a win on the final day. As a result we proudly started 2018/19 in the Premier Division.

Season 2018/19 was to present two challenges: One: Make the necessary ground improvements to reach the next level ground grading requirements - Grade ‘C’ - which meant the addition of two new stands - one a 100 seater and the other a 100 standing - this was achieved on time - thanks to the hard work of club members and supporters and fund raising and grants. Two: Establish ourselves at step three of the Non-League football pyramid - this we did - finishing 16th in the league table in the Bostik Premier League - this despite James Duncan and his management team leaving in October - but we again promoted from within with Lee O’Leary stepping up to player/manager and being joined by Scott Cousins as joint manager.

Our home crowds continued to improved - averaging 210 a game with a record league attendance of 504 when we played Enfield Town.

It was another season of significant progress.

A pacy winger who spent 11 years at the West Ham Academy reaching U23 level.

Following a short spell at Redbridge he went on to play for Crawley Town U23s for a season. Last season saw him start at Staines Town picking up a number of goals before moving to Beaconsfield Town after impressing against them for Staines.

THE BEES WERE FORCED INTO A REPLAY AS A LAST MINUTE EQUALISER SECURED A DRAW FOR POTTERS BAR TOWN. JOSH

MAKING A STRING OF FINE STOPS.

HOW IT HAPPENEDThe Bees controlled possession from the off and played a patient style of football as they looked to stamp their authority on the cup tie.

On the 16th minute Josh Walker fired Darren Currie’s men ahead as he turned well in the box, before firing into the bottom corner. The goal stemmed from good work by Cheye Alexander as he beat

his and whipped in a dangerous cross.

Seven minutes later Walker was involved again as he looked to squeeze a shot in at the near post but Scholars ‘keeper R’avan Constable did well to turn our striker’s effort around the post.

Jack Taylor nearly caught out Constable with a looping free kick which looked like it was on his way in, but the ‘keeper did just enough to tip it over.

From the resulting corner Pavey headed on goal but his effort was dramatically headed off the line by a Scholars defender. Our number nine ever so close to opening his account in an amber shirt.

At the other end Gogo sent a timid strike which was comfortable for Scott Loach in between the sticks for the Bees.

Four minutes into the second half and the Bees were awarded a penalty as Walker was fouled in the area. Pavey stepped up and saw his penalty well saved by Constable.

Loach had to be alert as the ball broke through towards goal, but our stopper was off his line quickly to smother at the feet of Andy Lomas.

Second half substitute Ephron Mason-Clark saw a curling effort sail over the bar as the Bees looked to wrap the tie up in the closing stages.

Elliott Johnson did well to tee up Jack Taylor, but the Irishman saw his shot comfortably saved by Constable. Taylor tried his luck again five minutes later as he curled towards the top corner, but the Scholars keeper did brilliantly to deny him once again. He then stopped Mason-Clark’s effort at his near post.

Into added time and it was the Scholars stopper in inspired form again as he made a superb reflex stop from Alexander’s powerful strike from the corner of the box. On another day the scoreline could have been much more comfortable for the Bees.

The hosts levelled with all but the last kick of the game as Andy Lomas scrambled the ball over the line.

This came on the same day as Haringey Borough manager Tom Loizou took his players off the pitch in their FA Cup fourth qualifying round tie against Yeovil Town, after reports of racism, causing the game to be abandoned. “I am of the view that we had no choice. We could not carry on and play football yesterday” said club chairman Aki Achillea on Sunday. “It is soul-destroying because of the effort we’ve put in to encourage so many people from our area, from so many cultures, to come and watch what we have on offer” he added. “If you look at the make-up of our team, we have six or seven Greek Cypriots, I’m Greek Cypriot, the manager is. We have a multitude of West Indians, Africans, Portuguese. We have virtually every nationality as part of the playing squad, and to see them have to be subjected to that, it is soul-destroying”. Goalkeeper Valery Douglas Pajetat was allegedly spat at, as well as being hit by an object thrown by the Yeovil Town fans. Defender Coby Rowe was said to have also been abused racially.

Championship side Bristol City have said that they are looking into reports that some of their fans may have used racist language during their game against Luton Town at the weekend. The fixture took place at Kenilworth Road, and was won 3-0 by the hosts. Steve Lansdown, the owner of the Robins, said that he was “shocked and disappointed” when he heard that abuse had come from the away end of the ground. Bristol City is a “family club which celebrates diversity”, he said in a statement. “I can assure our genuine supporters and Luton Town, who have been very helpful, that we are fully investigating these reports. We will deal harshly with anyone found behaving in a racist manner and they will be banned from Ashton Gate and from purchasing tickets at future away matches”.

What’s the Buzz?

W H A T ’ S T H E B U Z Z

Former Wales international Steve Morison has this week announced his retirement from playing. The 36 year old started out his career at Northampton Town, before playing for the likes of Bishop’s Stortford, Stevenage, Millwall, Norwich City and Leeds United. After a return to Millwall in 2013, he had signed a one year contract at Shrewsbury Town over the summer, but has now departed the club. The former Premier League forward had scored 248 goals in the 655 first team games that he played. He also made several England C and Wales caps. “I’ve spent an amazing two decades as a professional footballer,” he said. “I have so many wonderful memories. But I feel the time is right to move on to the next stage of my career - and I couldn’t be more excited”. He has now rejoined Northampton as an academy coach.

AFC Wimbledon manager Wally Downes has been suspended from football activity for four weeks

following admitting that he had breached FA betting rules. The 58 year old reportedly placed five bets on various football games between November 2013 and January 2014, as well as three more between March and July of this year. FA rules state that anyone employed by a football club is banned from gambling on matches, as it is seen that they can have an influence on the game to affect its outcome. Since being charged last month Downes has also been fined £3,000, and has been suspended by AFC Wimbledon. The 28 day suspension will be from all football related activity, including coaching, and will end on 14th November.

With the preliminary round having taken place last week, the draw for the first qualifying round of the FA Trophy has been made, and there are several of our local sides in action. Wingate and Finchley will host Hayes and Yeading United, Hendon are away at Whitehawk, and Cheshunt are at home to East Thurrock United. Ware are travelling to Leatherhead, our opponents tonight Potters Bar are going to Heybridge Swifts, and Enfield Town have been drawn away to Bishop’s Stortford. Uxbridge

will entertain Bognor Regis Town, Harrow Borough have an away tie at Suffolk’s AFC Sudbury, and Haringey Borough will face Horsham. Ties are set to be played this weekend.

Also taking place last week is draw for the FA Vase second round proper, with yet more of our local sides taking part. Colney Heath are going to be at home to Stowmarket Town, whilst Walthamstow will entertain AFC Uckfield Town, based in East Sussex, and FC Broxbourne Borough face an away trip to Leighton Town. Other notable ties in the round include Bishop Auckland against West Auckland Town, Northwich Victoria vs Wythenshawe Town, Worcester City’s home game against Dunkirk, and Consett’s visit to Irlam. All of the ties are due to be played on the weekend of 2nd November.

Last week saw Isthmian League Premier side Leatherhead get a new chairman and a new look board of directors. Now former chairman Richard Bligh stepped down from his role at the Surrey side a week ago, and has now been replaced with Daniel Hodges, who was a director before being made chairman. Bligh had voluntarily stepped down from the job, with his reason being personal, said a club statement, however he will continue on at the club as a director and as membership secretary. John Dean, a local businessman who has previous footballing experience at Crystal Palace, has also joined the board at Fetcham Grove.

With the fourth round stage having taken place earlier in the month, the draw for the Scottish Challenge Cup quarter final has been made, and it involves both of the National League sides that entered the competition. This is the second season that English sides have entered Scotland’s third cup competition, with Boreham Wood and Sutton United taking part last season, alongside clubs from Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales. Wrexham are through to the last eight after a home win against St Mirren U21, having defeated Ayr United at home in the previous round. Having beaten Kelty Hearts away in the last round, Solihull Moors face Rangers U21 at home in round four, with that tie the only fixture left to be played (due to be played next Tuesday). The quarter final draw has thrown out an interesting draw, with Wrexham travelling away to the winner of that tie, potentially giving an all English tie.

It has been announced this week that a new club from the Isle of Man will enter the English football pyramid from next season, with their proposals having been accepted. The new club, called FC Isle of Man, has recently been officially affiliated to the IoMFA (Isle of Man FA), with the club aiming to start in step 6, most likely in one of the two North West Counties Football League Division 1 divisions. In the past 15 years, that league has seen the likes of Fleetwood Town, FC United of Manchester and AFC Fylde all be crowned champions, before going on to play higher up the pyramid, with Fleetwood reaching the heights of League 1. The division is also a likely candidate to accept in Bury, or their new phoenix club, so a potential tie between the two clubs next year is likely to be on the cards.

To: Barnet Football Club

Address : The Hive London, HA8 6AG

From: Carla Devine

Me and a friend I had convinced to be a Bee for the day set off for our local derby getting the 10:58 train from Kings Cross for the early kick off. We arrived at Potters Bar by 11:15 perfectly timed with my parents who had driven down from Leeds. They picked us up and we parked just opposite the football ground at the cricket club. We made our way into the away end being inside an hour prior to kick off. The ground was quite small and randomly had one tiny sheltered bit of terracing in the middle of the away end. We had some food and watched the teams warm up before the game was underway.

Quite quickly it became clear the game wasn’t going to be a pretty one, with the ball spending most of the opening 5 minutes in the air rather than being played on the ground. However, we were doing well to try and play how we wanted with early chances from Walker and Taylor. On 16 minutes, this paid off when Josh Walker got his 4th goal in as many games, putting us one ahead when he was able to calmly put away a lovely cross from Cheye Alexander. On 23 minutes, we were close to getting another but Walker’s initial shot was saved and the follow up from Adams was just over the bar. Pavey was the next player to come close on 34 minutes when his header was cleared off the line. Just before half time, Callum Reynolds made a very impressive goal line clearance himself to stop the hosts from equalising, taking us into half time 1-0 up. The day was colder than I had anticipated so a hot chocolate went down a treat before the teams came back out with all to play for. Just 4 minutes into the second half, things were looking up for us when we were awarded a penalty. However, Pavey was so unlucky to have his penalty saved. We carried on attacking and had chances from Taylor and Mason-Clark but nothing was going in. On 96 minutes, the game took a horrible turn when Alfie Pavey was involved in a nasty tackle, being stretchered off after lengthy treatment. To make matters worse, on 100 minutes Potters Bar got a last minute goal that came off Sweeney as he tried to block it. The ref blew for full time taking our 1-1 draw to a replay.

We walked back to the car and had a nice short drive to Barnet. My parents dropped me and my friend at the tube station giving us the day to watch the rest of the afternoon’s games in Central London. It was a gutting afternoon all round but I hope we can put things right in Tuesday night’s game and I wish Alfie Pavey a speedy recovery.

-First half goals from Bonnie Horwood and Merrick Will set us on our way before Lauren Pickett capped off a memorable afternoon with a third in the second half.

Sarah Quantrill was called into action in the fourth minute as she tipped over Harley Bennett’s long range drive as the hosts started on the front foot.

Up the other end the Bees had a golden chance to go ahead as Pickett teed up Will who’s effort was somehow saved by Thomas. The follow up from Pickett was then held by the ‘keeper, the Bees very much holding their own against full time opposition.

Quantrill made a fine stop after 22 minutes as she turned round a prodded near post effort that was destined for the bottom corner, our number one showing why she’s one of the most highly rated ‘keepers in the division.

The Bees took the lead on 25 minutes as Horwood beautifully struck a free-kick into the top corner from 20 yards out. It was a superb way for our number eight to open her account for the club.

For a good period of 10 or so minutes the hosts looked to respond as they put countless balls into the box, but the Bees stood firm and defended resolutely to keep their lead.

It was two just before the break as Merrick Will rose highest from Meg Alexander’s corner to power a header into the back of the net. It was no less than Lee Burch’s side deserved after a superb first half showing.

After the break the hosts really put the Bees under pressure as they controlled possession for large parts. However it took till 62nd minute for a clear cut chance as Kemmpi broke into the area to fire a shot that Quantrill was equal to.

Despite the pressure it was the Bees who netted a third, as they won the ball high up the pitch before Pickett saw her strike deflect past Thomas to extend her sides advantage.

Burch’s side had more chances through Horwood and Pickett who both saw efforts fly wide of the post, up the other end we restricted our London rivals to half chances at most.
