Baroid Surface Solutions™ Baroid V-133 and Baroid V-71 Cuttings Dryers The Baroid V-133 Cuttings Dryer has been proven to provide a dramatic reduction in drill solids waste discharge and to help maximize the recovery of synthetic-, oil-, or ester-based drilling fluids. The unit has also been proven to help operators meet environmental compliance requirements such as the EPA requirements for discharge in the Gulf of Mexico and also reduce the volumes of drilling waste that has to be transported from a drilling location for disposal. The high-capacity V-133 Cuttings Dryer is a screen-type centrifuge that can be adapted to auger or other feed styles, including Halliburton’s SupaVac™ system. The dryer is designed for the continuous feed and efficient throughput necessary for drilling operations. Convenient access to normal wear parts helps simplify maintenance and minimize unit downtime. The V-71 dryer is very similar in design to the V-133 dryer but has a smaller footprint, a lower profile and a lower power requirement. This unit will process less material than the V-133 unit but can be used in situations where high drilling rates are not expected or the rig constraints will not allow installation of the larger V-133 unit. Setting Up Cuttings Dryer Operations Successful dryer operations are not as simple as installing and running the cuttings drying equipment. The fluids recovered by the dryer usually contain high levels of low gravity solids that can cause significant problems if returned directly to the drilling fluid system. Additional processing, usually with high speed centrifuges, is often required and this has to be included when planning the installation of a dryer package. This can create complex equipment packages as shown in the diagram at the right. Understanding the entire system required, working with existing rig space and equipment and closely monitoring the performance of the cuttings dryer are part of the Baroid Surface Solutions™ service. Baroid can offer the full suite of equipment, the necessary fluids service and knowledge and the environmental compliance monitoring service that are all necessary to help ensure a successful, cost-effective and compliant operation. The Baroid V-133 Cuttings Dryer has been proven to provide a dramatic reduction in drill solids waste discharge and to help maximize the recovery of synthetic-,oil-, or ester-based drilling fluids. The unit has also beenproven to help operators meet environmental compliancerequirements such as the EPA requirements for discharge inthe Gulf of Mexico and also reduce the volumes of drillingwaste that has to be transported from a drilling location for disposal.

The high-capacity V-133 Cuttings Dryer is a screen-typecentrifuge that can be adapted to auger or other feed styles, including Halliburton’s SupaVac™ system. The dryer isdesigned for the continuous feed and efficient throughputnecessary for drilling operations. Convenient access to normal wear parts helps simplify maintenance and minimize unit downtime.

The V-71 dryer is very similar in design to the V-133 dryerbut has a smaller footprint, a lower profile and a lowerpower requirement. This unit will process less material thanthe V-133 unit but can be used in situations where highdrilling rates are not expected or the rig constraints will notallow installation of the larger V-133 unit.

Setting Up Cuttings Dryer Operations

Successful dryer operations are not as simple as installingand running the cuttings drying equipment. The fluidsrecovered by the dryer usually contain high levels of lowgravity solids that can cause significant problems if returneddirectly to the drilling fluid system. Additional processing, usually with high speed centrifuges, is often required andthis has to be included when planning the installation of adryer package. This can create complex equipment packagesas shown in the diagram at the right.

Understanding the entire system required, working withexisting rig space and equipment and closely monitoring the performance of the cuttings dryer are part of the Baroid Surface Solutions™ service. Baroid can offer the full suite of equipment, the necessary fluids service andknowledge and the environmental compliance monitoringservice that are all necessary to help ensure a successful,cost-effective and compliant operation.

Baroid has successfully used cuttings dryersoffshore to reduce retention on cuttings(ROC) to a low enough level that cuttingscan be directly discharged overboard.Baroid also used dryers in offshore zerodischarge operations to reduce the amountof waste that had to be transported back toshore and disposed of. This technique hasalso been applied in land operations inNorth and Latin America.

Performance Runs

The Baroid V-133 Cuttings Dryer has been used on offshore and land operationsand results show that oil on cuttings can be reduced by 65% - 75% by weight. The data at right is from an offshore well and shows typical oil on cuttingsvalues after treatment with the V-133dryer. The average for this 39 day projectwas 3.61% by weight oil on cuttings after processing.
