Year 3 have spent time working with the square metre. In groups we created a square metre using paper. We then moved through the school and measured various area to find out how many square metres were in certain areas.

After that we came back into the classroom and estimated how many people can stand on a square metre. We were able to fit 16 people on a square metre.

We then talked about how many people we could fit on the square metre if it was cut in half and taped down so it was 2m x 5m. The guess was more, and we were right. We fitted 18 people.

We then thought about how many people may fit onto the square metre, if it was cut in half again and re-taped to be 4m x .25m. We guessed more, but we ran out of time….

What a great term we have had, with Term 1 certainly setting the foundation for a successful 2019. From our strong participation at the Swimming Carnival to our wonderful Learning Showcase at the Primary it has been a truly wonderful term. Barra the Bull has certainly been a welcome addition as the school mascot with the school embracing the Positive Behaviour for Learning mantra of being Safe, Respectful, Learners. The “Milkshakes with the Principal” at the Primary and the Sausage Sizzles at the Secondary have been a highlight and a reward for our Safe, Respectful Learners. (Although I may need to do some extra exercise in the holidays.)

We had a visit from Health Harold last week. It was a great opportunity for our students to learn about healthy habits and their bodies. All the students were well behaved even if Healthy Harold was a little naughty with his carrots as Miss Shortt’s class found out. I know Barra the Bull enjoyed his visit and learnt a lot when he went with the Year 3 class.

Our Positive Behaviour for Learning focus for the start of next term will be Ready to Learn. Being Ready to Learn is key to everything that we do at school. It is the simple things that all add up to making us Ready to Learn. Some top tips are:

Get a goodnights sleep

Have a good breakfast

Have everything organised for school. (uniform, crunch and sip, recess, lunch, pencil case, books, etc)

Enter school with a positive mindset

Be on time

Turn off distractions

Listen actively

Try to do everything

Ask questions

Be prepared to get things wrong

Due to the ongoing drought the school will not be issuing invoices for school fees this year. The school will endeavour to subsidise school excursions to make them as affordable as possible. If any family needs assistance please contact me directly.

The Easter Hat Parade will be on Thursday 11 April at 12:50pm. Barra the Bull and I have already started work on our hats. All parents are welcome to come and see the wonderful creations the students have made at school.

Year 3 and Aboriginal SheltersWe have been studying the history of Australia, from the early explorers, to Captain Cook and our Indigenous people.

For Creative Arts t was decided that we would make Aboriginal shelters in our garden so we could get an idea of the living conditions of our first inhabitants.

From only a few pictures as a guide, some sticks and a small amount of string the groups went off and worked together.

There were a variety of designs, none that would withstand wind or any type of downpour, but they very creative nevertheless!

Narrabri Fish FarmTwenty-one students enjoyed an informative and interesting field day at the Narrabri Fish Farm.

Students were able to closely observe murray cod, silver and golden perch, catfish, native carp and yabbies. Students learnt a lot about raising and farming native fish and yabbies.

Fish and yabbies were purchased for our school Aquaponics project. The highlights of the day included catching fish and learning how to identify male and female yabbies and of course the barbecue lunch.
