Barrie has over 51 km of recreational trails,
39 km of signed bike routes and 5.6 km of
on-road bike lanes.
The Nine Mile Portage trail runs between
Barrie’s Memorial Square and historic Fort
Willow in the Township of Springwater. Its
history dates back to early aboriginals and
was used later on by the British military
during the War of 1812, and early settlers.
For cyclists, Barrie has a network of on-road
routes, roadways with laneways and multi-
use trails displayed on the City’s online map.
Approximately 20 km of Trans Canada Trail
passes through Barrie, connecting us to
the Town of Innisfil to the south and the
Township of Springwater to the northwest.
Bicycle laneways are available on Mapleview
Drive east of Yonge Street, on Veteran’s Drive
between Salem Road and Harvie Road, and
on Ferndale Drive South between Tiffin Street
and Summerset Drive.
Every September we celebrate the Nine Mile
Portage Heritage Festival where people can
walk a part or the entire trail to Fort Willow
in the Township of Springwater. The event
includes snacks, shuttle services and historic
reenactments.
Even dogs have their own trail in Barrie. The
Dog Off Leash Recreation Area (DOLRA) is
located in Sunnidale Park.
The largest trails within the Barrie trail
network are the North Shore Trail, the Ardagh
Bluffs Walking Trails and the Trans Canada Trail
that passes through the City.
The 3.5 kilometre waterfront trail follows the
shoreline of Kempenfelt Bay from Minet’s
Point Road to Heritage Park and is open year
round.
Southshore
Community Centre, St.
Vincent Park, Heritage
Park, Centennial
Park - and all the
Recreation Centres
have accessible
washrooms.
The City of
Barrie has
an Adopt-a-Park and Adopt-a-Trail program
as a community service for volunteers to
assist in keeping our parks and trails safe from
vandalism and free of garbage. To become
involved, register online through the City’s
web page or call the Engineering Department
at (705) 739-4207 during regular business
hours.
Barrie releases a new map in mid-June to be
made available at various City buildings, the
Barrie Library and Tourism Office. A map can also
be viewed at www.barrie.ca under the Parks and
Trails of the Community section.
Barrie’s Trails to Adventure
The new and improved City Page
rebranded as “This Week in Barrie” is
sporting a fresher look, doubling into
a two page spread and located in the
prized centre portion of the Barrie
Examiner. In addition to editorial based
articles and important community news,
readers will now find event listings, public
service announcements, employment
opportunities, and bid and tender
opportunities.
The changes result mainly from efforts
to communicate exciting events, issues
and information that accompany our
growing community in addition to fulfilling
the 2010 plan of expanding the City’s
communications and outreach to residents
consistent with Council’s strategic Priority
of ‘ensuring proactive communications
with the public and increased opportunities
for citizen engagement.’
“We know from the Citizen Survey
conducted in late 2008 and early 2009
that residents look for city information in
the dedicated page in the Examiner each
week… having more information in one
spot makes things easier for the reader, “
says Barrie’s Director of Communications
and Intergovernmental Affairs Rebecca
James-Reid.
The City will also communicate information
seven days a week on Rock and Kool FM
radio spots, the A-channel 6 pm news and
on Rogers TV.
“These new initiatives have provided the
corporation with significant cost savings
by allowing us to bulk buy, saving the
corporation money while increasing our
opportunities to communicate with the
residents of Barrie.”
