El proyecto trata una renovación total de un bar del centro,de tres niveles, con nuevos dueños y una rica historia. Las con-diciones espaciales del bar refuerzan los deseos y permitenuna variedad de uso. Hay tres plantas en el área del pequeñoedificio, y cada una podría fácilmente ser tematizada. El nivelmás bajo, el subterráneo, es el lugar para la música y el baile.En el medio, la planta presenta una doble vida: es un bar muyconcurrido durante las noches, pero también es un tranquilocafé durante las mañanas. Por último, el espacio de la galeríasuperior es el lugar para reuniones más íntimas o reunionesde grupos. La temática y la combinación de colores de losinteriores se inspiró directamente en la película: una paráfrasisabsolutamente deliberada. En la parte inferior aparece un pavi-mento de cuadros blancos y negros, luces frías y paredesnegras con secuencias de la icónica película sobre ella. En laparte central el techo aparece cuarteado, roto, y a través de ély por medio de luces prácticamente infinitas podemos obser-var demasiados acontecimientos. El color rojo es el dominan-te. El mostrador de la barra es naranja, plata, negro y rojo, mar-cando otra cita de la película. El baño se presenta totalmentenegro y finito. En la planta superior, la pared plateada se conec-ta visualmente al nivel central a través del corte en el forjadoblanco y negro. Aquí los lavabos son rojos e infinitos.Beethoven da la bienvenida a los invitados en la parte superiorde la escalera.

A total renewal of a three-level downtown bar with newowners and a rich history. The barÊs spatial conditions supportthe desires, and allow a variety of use. There are three floorson the small building area, and each could easily be themati-zed. The lowest, underground level is the place for loud musicand dancing. In the middle, the ground floor lives a double-life:a crowded bar at night, but an easy café in the mornings.Finally, the upper gallery space is the place for intimate mee-tings or group gatherings. The theme and the color-scheme ofthe interiors were directly inspired by the film – a deliberateparaphrase. Underground: black and white checkered floor,cold lights and black walls with the filmÂs iconic scripts onthem. In the center: the ceiling is broken through – truly andby the means of the infinite-lamps virtually too. The red coloris dominating. The bar-counter is orange, silver, black and redchecked – another quotation from the film. The toilet is fullyblack and finite. Above: the silvery wall connects visually to thecentral level through the cut on the black and white floor.Here the toilets are red and infinite. Beethoven welcomes theguests at the top of the stairs.

En un esfuerzo por contrarrestar la esterilidad de los acaba-dos baratos y antisépticos del edificio, Johnsen SchmalingArchitects han diseñado un espacio interior con un alto nivelde texturas, complejidad visual y dramatismo. Una pared delamas de madera con un textura profunda, se hace eco de laondulación enigmática de las pesadas cortinas de escenario,conduce desde el vestíbulo del edificio hasta el área del barantes de que envuelva el sobrecargado entrepiso, donde setransforma en una pantalla de asientos íntimos en el nivelsuperior. Las rítmicas modulaciones de los listones de madera,reforzados por una serie de delgadas columnas de aceroestructural que afirman la planta intermedia, constituyen eltelón de fondo para una cinta continua de paneles de plásticocelular retro iluminados, fabricados a medida y que permane-cen estirados a través del espacio vacío entre las dos plantas.Elevándose desde la barra del nivel principal, la cinta se ejecutasobre los asientos del salón antes de ajustarse hacia abajo nue-vamente para formar un pequeño escenario en el que tocanlas bandas nocturnas. Espacialmente, la cinta de luz normalizala geometría sesgada del local y reúne a los elementos progra-máticos de ambos niveles. Igualmente, consolida y oculta labarra de toda la infraestructura técnica, evitando la mecánicadel desorden que tan a menudo compromete la pureza de losespacios comerciales.

CON VISTAS AL R¸O MILWAUKEE, ESTE BAR SE ENCUEN-TRA EN UN PEQUEÑO ESPACIO TALLADO EN UNEXCEPCIONAL DESARROLLO COMERCIAL EN ELBORDE SUR DE LA CIUDAD.

In an effort to counteract the sterility of the buildingÊs cheap,antiseptic finishes, we designed an interior space with a highlevel of tactility, visual complexity, and drama. A deeply textu-red wood slat wall, echoing the enigmatic undulation of heavystage curtains, leads from the building lobby into the bar areabefore it wraps overhead and cradles the mezzanine, where ittransforms into a screen for intimate upper level seating. Therhythmic modulations of the wood slats, reinforced by a seriesof thin structural steel columns supporting the mezzanine,forms the backdrop for a continuous ribbon of back-lit, cus-tom-fabricated cellular plastic panels weaving through thetwo-story space. Rising up from the main level bar, the ribbonruns above the main lounge seating before wrapping downagain to form a small stage for nightly bands. Spatially, the lightribbon normalizes the skewed geometry of the room and tiestogether the programmatic elements on both levels. In addi-tion, it consolidates and veils the barÊs entire technical infras-tructure, avoiding the mechanical clutter that so often com-promises the purity of commercial spaces.

OVERLOOKING THE MILWAUKEE RIVER, THIS BAR ISLOCATED IN A SMALL SPACE CARVED OUT OF ANUNEXCEPTIONAL COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT ONTHE SOUTHERN EDGE OF DOWNTOWN.

Atmospherically, the ribbonÊs deep red color washes the entirespace with a sensuous incandescence, creating an ambiance forunapologetic aesthetic indulgence. At night, the DowntownBar emits its mysterious glow through a series of large customsliding doors into MilwaukeeÊs somber nights, subtly markingthe resurgence of this downtown neighborhood.

En la atmósfera del local, el color rojo intenso de la cinta limpiatodo el espacio con una sensual incandescencia, creando unambiente de perfecta indulgencia estética.
