ESL PROVISIONAL UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS PROGRAMAcademically qualified students who do not have a sufficient TOEFL or IELTS score for undergraduate admission can apply through Baruch’s ESL Pipeline Program that helps them develop the English writing, reading, listening and speaking, grammar, and vocabulary needed to succeed in the under-graduate degree program. It also teaches U.S. cultural skills to ease the transition into New York City living. After meeting ESL Pipeline Program requirements, students matriculate as undergraduates at Baruch.
TOOLS FOR CLEAR SPEECHTools for Clear Speech is an academic support program dedicated to improving the oral communi-cation skills of English language learners (ELLs) and non-native English speakers at Baruch College. Professional speech consultants guide participants toward clearer, more effective communication by helping them to improve pronunciation, intelligibility, and pragmatic abilities. It includes: • One-to-one pronunciation tutorials 30 or 60 minutes in duration. • Pronunciation workshops that teach the basics of connected speech (Clear Speech 101), understanding American culture and pragmatics (Clarity and Confidence), and speaking intelligibly in a professional setting (Intelligibility in the Interview)• Conversation hours of no more than eight students that are moderated by an English tutor. • Oral communication video assessment that scores, and builds a portfolio of, students’ communicative challenges and progress during their time at Baruch.
CONVERSATION PARTNERSAs the name suggests, Conversation Partners matches native and non-native speakers of English for informal conversations. These unstructured interactions build ELL students’ confidence in conver-sational English, and they give native speakers experience in communicating across language barriers. Both partners also gain cultural awareness, a sense of community, and the potential for friendships and networks across cultural lines.
SPECIAL PROGRAMSBaruch College offers numerous resources to help English language learners succeed as students and New Yorkers.
The Division of Continuing and Professional Studies (CAPS) offers more than 150 courses across the professional spectrum that can be taken independently or as part of nearly 50 professional certificate programs in areas like accounting, digital marketing, real estate, international trade, professional communication, and project management. CAPS also offers longer-term F-1 visa eligible programs, such as the Contemporary American Business Practices certificate which spans one year, and various tracks in English language training (academic, business, and general) that range from one semester to up to two years. Test preparation courses for the TESOL, GMAT, GRE and other standardized exams are available in part-time, intensive, and customized formats of instruction. Courses are taught by Baruch professors, top researchers, and renowned industry professionals.
To support the career advancement of working professionals around the world, CAPS partners with globally recognized industry organizations such as the Society of Human Resources Management in individual or corporate programs.
In addition, CAPS excels in the creation of customized programs that meet the training and educa-tional needs of corporate, non-profit, and government employers. Our learning and development professionals work with management and their teams to design business-centered, goal-driven courses in an array of areas. Programs are held on Baruch’s campus, at business locations around New York, or at clients’ workplaces anywhere in the world. Often, international businesses choose to combine two course tracks—such as English language training and finance—into one intensive program to help employees improve both communication abilities and specialized professional skills.
Baruch College’s Division of Continuing and Professional Studies provides a combination of academic excellence and professional expertise to advance academic, career, or organizational goals.
Numerous flexible global programs are available for international students and organizations.
