Alsatian costumeWhile the black headdress remains symbolic of a certain image of Alsace, the traditional costume is, in fact, very varied (white sun-shaped headdresses in Meistratzheim, headdresses with a small bow worn well above the fore-head in Hunspach and Seebach etc.). In a number of villages, red skirts are for Catholic costumes and green for Protestants (and more rarely blue or violet). Whereas the headdress is always black for a young Protestant girl, it can be plain red, embroidered with flowers or tartan for a Young Catholic girl. Generally speaking, the costume depends on the woman’s status, religious festivals and geographical location.

Flower-decked towns and villages«Ah, what a beautiful garden» is what Louis XIV cried out when he saw Alsace spread before him from the Saverne Pass. And Alsace with its colourful towns and villages really is a sight to see! Northern Alsace ranks top in France for the number of villages and towns registered for their floral displays. The style of half-timbered houses varies according to whether they are found on the plain or in the mountains and what the buildings are used for (breeding, farming or wine-growing). The criss-cross pattern of the beams have symbolic shapes. A diamond shape symbolises fertility, a St. Andrew’s cross is for protection and multiplying (sometimes the diamond and cross are superimposed), slanted posts evoke the silhouette of a man and therefore virility. Inscriptions of Sun wheels and starry tulips with five or six branches protect the house from lightning, fire, witches and other evils. On the half-timbering and facades you can find sculpted figures and painted motifs. The steeply sloping roof (to evacuate snow) is made up of «Biberschwanz», roof tiles shaped like beaver tails. Inside, only the main room, the Stube, was heated as was the kitchen… Some experts claim that rather than being symbolic, each part of the halftimbering has above all a specific role to play in supporting the overall frame.

Many traditions stem from trying to find the meaning of life or protections rituals. Christian festivals are still important events in village life throughout the region. PAST AND PRESENT TRADITIONS ALL YEAR ROUNDThe Christmas cyclebegins with Advent, four Sundays before Christmas Day. The Advent crown with its candles symbolises the coming of the light. The candles are lit one by one every Sunday. During this period, all sorts of Christmas biscuits are made («Wihnachtsbredle»). The Christmas tree tradition is really a part of Alsace with the first one ever mentioned being in 1521 in Sélestat! Originally, it was decorated with red apples, wafers, paper roses, biscuits and candles. As to offering presents, the Protestant movement in Strasbourg transferred the event from St Nicholas’ Day to Christmas Eve in 1570.

Carnivalmarks the coming of Spring and the temporary reversal of the social order. Flaming disk throwers («Schieweschlawe»), a very old ritual game, still exists in some villages (Offwiller, Wintzenheim/Kochersberg)..

Easter to WhitsunEaster traditions were initially references to acts of purification with spring cleaning («Oschterputz»), and a dish of green vegetables and herbs served on Maundy Thursday («Gründunnerschda»). Nature being renewed and coming back to life is associated with Easter Sunday. The cake in the shape of an Easter lamb symbolises the Risen Christ. The Easter rabbit and his eggs are a celebration of the springtime and fertility. On 1st May, it was traditional to plant decorated green shrubs («Maïe») as a promise of love and esteem, and to celebrate the May Queens, young girls who were the messengers of Spring. Whitsun was a time for rituals linked with the vitality of Nature, personified by the Whitsun valets, hirsute figures made out of straw and green plants.

Saint-Jean bonfiresAt the beginning of Summer, Saint-Jean bonfires, relics of Summer solstice festivals, still burn and light up the skies in Alsace.

«Messtis»(from Messtag = day of the Mass) or Kilbe, are fete-days for the patron saints and annual fairs usually held in theSummer. Traditionally, they are held from Whitsun to the Autumn. Among other customs, a greasy pole is erected with sausages, hams, pretzels, bunches of vegetables and sweetmeats hanging from it. The young village lads compete against each other to try and grab them. These messtis are now giving way to another type of festival (flower-decorated cavalcades) and all sorts of other summer events.

Autumn and winterAfter the grain harvests, October is the month of grape-picking. In the old days, as Winter crept in, the eveninggatherings would begin. Several families would gather round the ceramic stove («Kachelofe») and various tasks carried out – repairing tools, spinning hemp, cracking walnuts and beechnuts… with all the generations together, telling anecdotes and recounting legends. Saint Martin’s Day marked the end of the economic year. A procession with lanterns is still part of the customs today in the Rhineland. In Alsace, beets – not pumpkins - were carved out and lit. It is said that the light paved the way for St. Nicholas’ donkey..

RHINE ROUTE+ - 140 kmThe mythical River Rhine is a magnet for many who come just to contemplate the flowing currents. It enters Alsace just downstream of Basel and leaves the region at Lauterbourg. In the 8th and 9th centu-ries, boatmen were already sailing down the Rhine to the North Sea to sell wine to the English, Danes and Swedes. In former times, the Rhine flooded the plain, but

at the end of the 19th century, extensive works were undertaken to regulate the course of the river.

BEYOND THE FOREST TO THE NORTHERN VOSGES+ - 170 kmBeyond the forest of Haguenau lies a region bordered to the East by the Rhine and to the West by the Regional Nature Park of the Northern Vosges. It is a land of hills, dales and forests, the main tourist attraction being the picturesque villages and potters’ villages, spas, castles and the Maginot Line.

FROM THE VOSGESMOUNTAINS TO THERIED PLAIN+ - 260 kmThe middle Vosges culminate at an altitude of between 900 and 1,100 metres. Easy to

access, the excellent road network means you can reach the mountain meadows and wooded heights via the mountain passes or visit the deep valleys. 1939-1945 NATzWILLER

– Concentration camp at Natzweiler- Struthof (Camp de concentration de Natzweiler-Struthof). This is the only camp on French soil run by the Nazis and it quickly became a death camp through hard labour. 4 buildings still remain today (out of 17 originally built) with the crema-torium, cells and the museum. Religious heritageAlsace is a land of great spirituality and has been for centuries past. Romanesque art was practised extensively over a long period of time and is characterised by some remarkable monastic churches. Enhanced by the growth of the towns, the apotheosis of Gothic art is found in Strasbourg Cathedral. After the Thirty Years’ War, superb edifices were built such as Ebersmunster, in flamboyant Baroque style. In a number of villages, there are two churches, reflecting the presence of both Catholic and Protestant communities. Furthermore, the density of rural synagogues still present today demonstrate how extensive the Jewish community has been since the Middle Ages. The Concordat regime specific to Alsace and Moselle has contributed to these three faiths being so firmly rooted here. The French Law of 1905 introducing the separation of the Church and the State does not in fact concern the region, which was annexed to Germany at the time. Today, Alsace remains the most multidenominational region of France.

Alsace, the land of organsNorthern Alsace has some 740 organs, including many in Protestant churches. Top-quality organs, in particular those built by the Silbermann family in the 18th century (Saint Thomas in Strasbourg, Bouxwiller, Gries, …).and Stiehr-Mockers in the 19th century (Roppenheim, Bischwiller, Barr, ...), are for the most part listed and restored. The beautiful sonority always resounds during the Sunday service and others. Furthermore the art of organ building is still well represented today with many renowned organ builders. Countless organ concerts demonstrate the vitality of this regional heritage.
