Base Oil
Base Oil is the name given to lubrication grade oils produced from refined crude oil (mineral base oil) by first distilling then refining, de-waxing, hydro-finishing and then blending.Base stocks thus obtained are called Solvent Neutral Base Oils.

Base Oil GroupsThree groups are refined from petroleum crude oil.Group I
• Group I base oils are less than 90 percent saturates, greater than 0.03 percent sulfur and with a viscosity-index range of 80 to 120. Group 1 base oils are the least refined of all the groups. Group I base oils are solvent-refined, which is a simpler refining process. They are usually a mix of different hydrocarbon chains with little uniformity. Grades: SN 150, SN500.Group II
• Group II base oils are defined as being more than 90 percent saturates, less than 0.03 percent sulfur and have viscosity index of 80 to 120. They are often manufactured through hydro-cracking which is a complex process.Group III
• Group III base oils are greater than 90 percent saturates, less than 0.03 percent sulfur and have a viscosity index above 120 which means that this group has longer intermolecular chain and are stable as compared to Group 1.
Base Oil Groups
• Despite significant production advances in Group II and III, Group I production continues to form the backbone of global base oil output.

Base Oil Demand
• World lubricant demand is increasing 1.6-2.3 percent per year.
• Advances will be the strongest in the developing Asian countries due to ongoing rapid industrialization as well as rising car ownership rates, majority in Asia region, particularly China and India.
