About Carousel Theatre for Young People Carousel Theatre for Young People is in its 38th season of creating and producing theatre specifically

for young people. Each season approximately 40 000 young people and their families benefit from

CTYP’s programming. In continuation with its partnership with VOCALEYE, CTYP will once again

offer special audio-described performances and a special touch tour to blind and low-vision patrons.

The company has received 12 Jessie Awards and 60 nominations in the Theatre for Young Audiences

category in the past five seasons. Carousel Theatre plays a unique role in the ecology of

our community, and is the only theatre company in BC that produces a fully

professional season of mainstage programming especially for young people.

About CTYP’s Seussical TM CTYP’s production of SeussicalTM swept the 2008 Jessie Awards winning 3 awards in the

Theatre for Young Audience’s category, including Outstanding Production.

“An affectionate tribute to one of the world’s most beloved purveyors of nonsense, Seussical is full of

colour, rhyme, and magic.” (Kathleen Oliver, The Georgia Straight)

“Kids will love the colorful fun and parents can be happy that the zaniness is mixed with nice

messages.” (Peter Birnie, The Vancouver Sun)

“...Carousel Theatre’s Carole Higgins stages a highly polished professional production wrapped up

like a shiny Christmas gift.” (Jerry Wasserman, Vancouverplays.com)

Director’s Notes: Carole Higgins Welcome to the return of our beloved Seussical. Our charming little musical has captured the hearts

of thousands of young people and families, so much so that audiences have clamored for its return.

The stories of Dr. Seuss are some of the most heart-warming, profound books ever written. The word

play, delightful rhymes and boundless imagination of these stories have put smiles on our faces and

songs in our hearts.

In the midst of all the fun that is Seussical is a simple, sweet story in which an elephant, a boy, a bird,

some monkeys, a kangaroo, a zebra and a host of animals come together to live in harmony and to

protect a little universe.

We live in a complicated, busy world with complicated problems. Dr. Seuss reminds us to slow

down, see those around us, to reach out and offer a hand to those in need. It is a message we can all

take to heart and come together to help make our world a gentler, happier place because… ‘a person’s a person no matter how small’.

Synopsis SEUSSICAL™ brings together an assortment of colorful characters and fantastical stories from

thirteen Dr Seuss books into one lively production that’s sure to have everyone laughing out loud.

The Cat is the Hat, one of Dr Seuss’s most well loved and mischievous characters, can be seen

throughout the play as he narrates the story and encourages Jojo, a small inquisitive child in

Whoville, to embark on a whirlwind of wild adventures.

The play begins in the Jungle of Nool where Horton the Elephant accidentally stumbles upon an entire

world of tiny beings living on a speck of dust. These beings, the Whos, beg Horton for help as they

are unable to control where their speck ends up and so are always at the mercy of chance. Horton

agrees to help the Whos and places their speck on a clover that he carefully guards voicing his

resolve with, “A person’s a person no matter how small.” Unfortunately none of Horton’s fellow jungle

animals can hear the Whos and so, led by Sour Kangaroo, mock him mercilessly for his devotion

towards the dust speck; all except, Gertude McFuzz, Horton's next door neighbor, who admires his

compassion and begins to fall in love with him.

The Wickersham brothers, a rambunctious group of monkeys, tease Horton, steal his clover and hand

it over to an evil eagle that drops the clover into an entire field of identical clovers. While Horton

desperately searches for his clover Gertrude, in a desperate attempt to capture Horton’s attention,

takes a pill to make her tail feather grow but overdoes it with alarming results. Mayzie La Bird, a

glamorous and narcissistic bird, convinces the kind-hearted Horton to sit on her new egg while she

takes a vacation. Horton makes a promise to protect the egg, even if it means he can no longer

search for his clover, and does so for month after month. He repeats the famous words, “I meant what

I said and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful one-hundred percent!” Eventually Horton and his

egg are captured and sold to the circus in Palm Beach where they are reunited with the errant

Mayzie who decides to give the egg to Horton to look after forever.

Gertrude then tells Horton that she has finally found

his speck of dust. However the other animals have

had enough of the elephant’s eccentric behavior

and threaten to boil the speck of dust. Horton

entreats the Whos to make themselves heard and

at last JoJo gives a great yell that allows everyone

to hear the Whos. From then on all the animals

agree to look after the Whos with Horton.

Suddenly the egg hatches and out of it flies an

elephant-bird who looks just like the elephant who

cherished it all those months. Gertrude happily

agrees to help the ecstatic Horton raise the little

elephant-bird as she sings, "I have wings, yes I can

The Company of Seussical Tm 2010 fly...you teach him earth, and I will teach him

sky."And so everything is now perfect in the Jungle of Nool, in the heat of the day, in the cool of the

pool…
