JV between Versalis and Genomatica Versalis and Genomatica have agreed to a jv for production of butadiene from renewable non-food sources. The new company will be the sole owner of the technology in Europe, Asia and Africa. Future licensees, including Versalis, will be required to provide the necessary capital to build and operate their facilities and for selling the butadiene produced. Versalis will invest $20 M in development of the new process technology and will be the first to use the rights to build commercial plants. The jv will make use of Genomatica’s expertise in biotechnologies especially in the modification of microorganisms and fermentation of sugar. Versalis has expertise in catalysis, process development, and engineering. Versalis new strategy involves involvement in innovation and the elastomer business.
