Facts and Figures: South West Zone
The goal of UBE programme is to ensure access to free,
compulsory education from Early Childcare Development (ECD),
Primary and Junior Secondary Schools Education to all Nigerian
children. Statistical facts and figures using the Basic Performance
Indicators of access, quality and equity for the South-West Zone
which comprises of six (6) States namely Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun,
Ondo, Osun and Oyo States, are provided in Appendix I. It is on
the strength of these that the following charts have been
generated to give meaning to the Facts and Figures for the Zone.
NUMBER OF ECD CENTRES AND SCHOOLS
Oyo State has the highest number ECD of centers, Primary and
Junior Secondary schools in the zone while Ekiti State has the
lowest number.
PUPIL ENROLMENT IN BASIC EDUCATION SCHOOLS
In ECD, Oyo State has the highest number of pupils with 123,679
as gross enrolment as well as 106,277 as net enrolment figure.
Similarly, Ekiti State has the lowest number with 27,820 as gross
and 23,109 as net enrolment.
In Primary, Oyo State has the highest number of pupils with 825,415 as gross enrolment and 747,443 as net. While Ekiti State recorded the lowest with 137,562 as gross and 119,115 as net.
Lagos State recorded the highest gross enrolment with 245,163 in JSS while Oyo State recorded the highest net enrolment with 163,266. While Ekiti State has the lowest gross and net enrolment of 49,936 and 35,604 respectively.

Ondo State has the highest number of in-take in primary while Ekiti has the lowest. Similarly, Lagos State has the highest in-take in JSS while Ekiti has the lowest.
Highest number of pupils expected to transit from ECD is recorded in Osun State while the lowest is in Ekiti. Similarly, the highest number of pupils who are expected to transit from Primary to JSS are found in Oyo State while the lowest is in Ekiti State.
Osun State has the highest percentage of official school age children in ECD with 89.4 percent while Ekiti State has the lowest. Ekiti State has the highest number of under age children with 14.3 percent while Lagos State has the lowest with 6.0. Lagos State has the highest number of over age children with 8.4 percent while Ekiti has the least with 2.6 percent
Ogun State has the highest percentage of official school age children in Primary with 92.4 percent while Ekiti State has the lowest with 86.6. Ekiti State has the highest percentage of underage children with 7.8 percent. Lagos State has the highest percentage of Overage and the lowest percentage of underage pupils with 11.8 and 1.3 percent respectively. Ondo has the lowest percentage of overage children with 4.1 percent.
Ondo State has the highest percentage of official school age children in JSS with 76.3 percent as well as the lowest percentage of overage student with 12.0 percent. Oyo State has the highest percentage of underage student with 12.0 percent while Osun State the lowest with 7.6 percent. Lagos State has the highest percentage of overage children and the lowest percentage of normal age student with 22.9 percent and 66.1 percent respectively.
Ogun State has the highest gross enrolment rate in ECD with 25 percent while Lagos State has the lowest with 10 percent. Similarly, Ogun and Oyo States recorded the highest gross enrolment rate with 21 percent each while Lagos State has the lowest with 8 percent.

Ondo State has the highest gross and net enrolment rates in primary with 113 and 103 respectively while Ekiti and Lagos States recorded the lowest with 32 and 28 each.
Ogun State recorded the highest gross and net enrolment rates in Junior Secondary with 62 and 47 while Ekiti State has the lowest with 23 and 16 respectively.
There is relatively parity on pupils’ enrolment in almost all the States and at all levels. Lagos State has high parity in primary and Junior Secondary level which means higher number of females than males.
Oyo State recorded the highest number of teachers at all the levels with ECD (3,250), primary (24,505) and JSS (9,221). Ondo, Ekiti and Osun States recorded the lowest with ECD (920), primary (9,356) and JSS (3,863) respectively.
TEACHING STAFF IN BASIC EDUCATION SCHOOLS
Osun State has the highest percentage of qualified teachers in
ECD with 95 percent while Ekiti State has the lowest with 76
percent.

Osun State recorded the highest percentage of qualified teachers
in primary with 96 percent while Ondo State recorded the lowest
with 90 percent. The quality of staff in this zone is very impressive.
Ekiti State has the highest percentage of qualified teachers in JSS
with 95 percent while Ogun State recorded the lowest with 87
percent.
In ECD, Ondo State has the highest Pupil/Teacher ratio as well as Pupil/Qualified teacher ratio of 1:76 and 1:89 respectively while Ekiti State has the lowest with 1:27 and 1:35 respectively.
In Primary, Ondo State has the highest Pupil/Teacher ratio as well as Pupil/Qualified teacher ratio of 1:58 and 1:64 respectively while Ekiti State has the lowest with 1:15 and 1:16 respectively.
In JSS, Lagos State has the highest Student/Teacher ratio as well as
Student/Qualified teacher ratio of 1:40 and 1:44 respectively
while Ekiti State has the lowest with 1:15 and 1:16 respectively.
Lagos State has the highest parity at all the levels with 18.6, 4.5 and 2.3 respectively while Ondo State has the lowest parity in ECD and primary levels with 4.9 and 2.0 respectively. Osun State has a near parity in JS with 0.9.
NON-TEACHING STAFF IN BASIC EDUCATION SCHOOLS
Lagos State recorded the highest number of non-teaching staff in ECD and primary levels with 1,195 and 9,537 respectively while Oyo State recorded the highest number in JSS with 2,079. Osun

State recorded the lowest at all levels with 5, 18 and 454 respectively
CONDITION OF CLASSROOMS IN BASIC EDUCATION
SCHOOLS
Oyo State has the highest number of classrooms with 2,625 in
which 1,132 are good while 1,493 are bad. Ekiti State has the
lowest with 1,017 in which 541 are good and 476 are bad.
Ondo State recorded the highest pupil/classroom ratio as well as
pupil/good classroom ratio with 1:53 and 1: 151 respectively while
Ekiti State has the lowest with 1: 27 and 1: 51 respectively.
Oyo State has the highest number of classrooms with 17,067 in
which 7,644 are good while 9,423 are bad. Ekiti State has the
lowest with 6,561 classrooms where 3,820 are good while 2,741
are bad.
Ondo State recorded the highest pupil/classroom ratio as well as
pupil/good classroom ratio with 1:49 and 1: 119 respectively while
Ekiti State has the lowest with 1:21 and 1: 36 respectively.
Oyo State has the highest number of classrooms with 5,548 in which 2,390 are good while 3,158 are bad. Ekiti State has the lowest with 1,539 where 649 are good and 890 are bad.
Lagos State recorded the highest student/classroom ratio as well as student/good classroom ratio with 1:90 and 1: 209 respectively while Ekiti State has the lowest with 1: 32 and 1: 77 respectively.

STREAMS/ARMS IN BASIC EDUCATION SCHOOLS
Oyo State recorded the highest number of streams in ECD (4,043),
primary (24,945) and JS levels (6,245) while Ekiti sate recorded the
lowest with ECD (1,184), primary (7,214) and JSS (1,438)
respectively.
PERSONNEL OF STATES UNIVERSAL BASIC EDUCATION
BOARD AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT EDUCATION
AUTHORITIES
Lagos State recorded the highest number of both LGEA and SUBEB
staff with 1,688 and 276 respectively while Osun State recorded
the lowest with 623 and 93 respectively.
Osun State has the highest percentage of LGEA staff in school
supervision while Ekiti and Oyo States have the lowest with 12
percent each. Ogun State has the highest percentage of SUBEB
staff in school supervision with 24 percent while Ekiti State
recorded the lowest with seven percent.
