Questions About Eligibility

Lane Blood Center follows strict guidleineswhen screening volunteer blood donors. All donors must answer questions regarding their health history before donating. Following are a few of the basic requirements for blood donors.

You Must:

* Be in good health* Be at least 16 years old* Weigh at least 110 pounds* Present valid photo identification or Lane Blood Center donor card at every donation* Eat a meal with protein and carbohydrates with 4 hours before your donation* Bring the name(s) of the medication(s) you are taking

Some Reasons For DeferralSome health conditions or medications maytemporarily prevent a person from donatingblood.

Medical Conditions:

Colds and Flu Cancer--basal or squamous cell Cancer--lymphoma or leukemia

Cancer--all other types Diabetes--insulin dependent Heart attack, heart disease

Medical Conditions Continued:

Hepatitis, after age 11 cannot donateHigh blood pressure can donate if controlled

Low iron 24 hr wait

Malaria 3 year waitOral surgery, tooth extraction 3 day waitSurgery--with transfusion 12 month waitSurgery--without transfusion call for evaluationVaccinations:

Measles, Mumps, Rubella, 1 month waitHepatitis, Shingles

Flu, Pneumonia can donate

Other Restrictions:Body piercing, tattoos can donate if performed in a licensed Oregon facility; if not 1 yr

Dieting steady weight loss program OK if loss does not exceed 3 pounds per week

Needle stick or body 12 month waitfluid exposure

Pregnant 6 weeks after conclusion of pregnancy

Residence on US Military call for criteriabase in Europe

Travel to malaria area 12 month wait; call for evaluation

Travel to or residence in cannot donatethe UK for 3 or more cumulative months between 1980--1996

Travel to or residence in cannot donateEurope for 5 or more cumulative years since 1980
