Cloud Computing – The Next Big Trend?

"Cloud computing has a significant POTENTIAL IMPACT ON EVERY ASPECT OF IT and how users access applications, information and business services.“

"Cloud computing is a MAJOR TECHNOLOGY TREND that has permeated the market over the last two years. It sets the stage for a new approach to IT that enables individuals and businesses to choose how they'll acquire or deliver IT services, with reduced emphasis on the constraints of traditional software and hardware licensing models,"

- David Cearley, vice president and Gartner Fellow, Gartner Report

• Way to increase capacity or add capabilities on the fly without investing in new infrastructure

• No need to build new, but licensing existing software

• Reduce scale up time

Predictions & News on Cloud

Gartner says Cloud market is expected grow to $ 109 billion by end 2013

According to report by IBM, nearly 3 in 4 companies use the cloud in some form

Impact on Economy - Companies are estimated to save a total of $12.3 billion by moving to the cloud

Forrester forecasts that the global market for cloud will grow from $40.7 billion in 2011 to more than $241 billion in 2020

Deloitte is predicting cloud-based applications will replace 2.34% of enterprise IT spending in 2014 rising 14.49% in 2020.

What is Cloud

Cloud computing is the use of computing resources (hardware and software) that are delivered as a service over a network (typically the Internet).

As a metaphor for the Internet, "the cloud" is a familiar cliché, but when combined with "computing," the meaning gets bigger and fuzzier.

Some analysts and vendors define cloud computing narrowly as an updated version of utility computing: Basically virtual servers available over the Internet.

Others go very broad, arguing anything you consume outside the firewall is "in the cloud," including conventional outsourcing.

Factors favoring movement to cloud

Page 10: Basics of cloud computing & salesforce.com

Benefits of Cloud

• Lower Costs - Cost savings that come with economy of scale

• Scale as Needed – As your applications grow, you can add

storage, RAM and CPU capacity as needed.

• Cap-Ex Free Computing - cash flow by eliminating the capital

expense associated with building the server infrastructure

• Deploy Projects Faster - Because servers can be brought up &

destroyed in a matter of minutes.

• Lower Maintenance Costs driven by 2 factors: Less

hardware and outsourced, shared IT staff.

Page 11: Basics of cloud computing & salesforce.com

Benefits of Cloud..contd.

• Resiliency and Redundancy –you can get automatic failover between hardware platforms and disaster recovery services

• Guaranteed "up time“• Software upgrades are provided with no cost and avoids

obsolescence• More available Capital to promote business growth

At the heart of many of the benefits of the on-demand model is a key innovation—a multitenant architecture

All users and applications share a single, common infrastructure down to the database level that is centrally maintained.

Cloud service models

PRIVATE CLOUD

Operated solely for an organization.

PUBLIC CLOUD

Made available to the general public or a large

industry group and is owned by an organization selling

cloud services.

HYBRID CLOUD

Composition of two or more clouds (private, community, or public) that

remain unique entities but are bound together by standardized or

proprietary technology that enables data and application portability

Fear of Cloud – Mitigated

72% cited security concerns Security of customer data has been the #1 priority of Saas companies today. Their systems are architected as a multi-tenant application that can securely store multiple customers

data on a shared architecture - This is the same approach that consumer banking web sites have followed for the past 10 years.

They maintain the highest security standards at three levels: Application Security, Facilities security & Network security

34 % selected Integration Issues Native connectors for SAP R/3 and Oracle 11i 32 certified integration middleware partners 300+ pre-built integrations to external web services on AppExchange Native connectors to desktop applications like MsOutlook, LotusNotes, Excel etc.

14% cited TCOCalculating an accurate TCO can also be a major challenge. Most of the TCO calculation do not factor in the value of opportunity cost (higher priorities for IT resources, cost of not upgrading, missing features, etc.) . An on demand system may be slightly more expensive than in-house over 5+ years. Regardless of which system may be cheaper, customers have found calculating ROI the best metric. When you take ROI, into consideration, cloud computing definitely has the upperhand.

Cloud – Does it have a future?

Gartner – Top Technology tends for

2013 & ahead.

Cloud features in the Top 5 for the

prospering technology trends in 2013 - just

behind Mobile and HTML 5

But by 2020 cloud is going to be a major

— and permanent — part of the enterprise

computing infrastructure.

Cloud – Does it have a future?

Around 2020, Johnson predicted, the size of

meaningful computational power will approach zero.

While computing power shrinks, the proliferation of big

data and the use of cloud computing will continue to
