What is RefWorks?

•A web-based bibliographic and database manager

•Creighton University faculty, students, and staff have access to this resource at no cost to the individual user

What can RefWorks do for you?

• RefWorks allows users to:– Create and organize a personal

database online– Integrate with Microsoft Word to

format in-text citations and bibliographies

– Import references from a variety of databases, including Medline, CINAHL, and PubMed

– Share references among collaborating researchers

What is RefShare?

• RefShare is a module within RefWorks that provides users with a way to share all or part of their database with others

• Users may share their RefWorks references with both members of their own institution and globally with others having Internet access

How do you access RefWorks?

Go tohttp://hsl.creighton.edu

and click on the silver RefWorks tab(upper right of screen)

Creating a RefWorks Account

1. Click on the “RefWorks” tab on any of the HSL web pages

2. Click on the “RefWorks Login page” link

3. Click on “Sign up for a New Account” (brown link in the box on the left side.)

4. Completely fill out the form – (login name and password do not need to be your Creighton login name and password)

5. Click on the “Next” at bottom of form

4. Fill in the required information to complete your registration.

5. Click on the “Create Account” at bottom of form

Building your RefWorks Database

• Exports citations directly from online databases

• Imports text files of citations from online databases

• Manually enter references and attached digital documents to RefWorks records

• Look up items and import records directly from CLIC (Creighton Libraries Information Catalog)

Creating Folders for your Citations

1. Log in to your RefWorks account2. Click on the “New Folders” tab

on the left side under the main menu bar

3. Type the folder name in the “New Folder Name” box and click on the “Create” button

• Add subfolders by left clicking on “Create Subfolders”

• Use the pull down menu to select your parent folder & add the name of the new subfolder in the “New Folder Name” box & click the "Create” button

– Select a folder to move citations using the folder pull down menu under “Organize & Share Folders” or click on the folder from the list under the “Folders” tab on the right side.

– You will then see only the citations in that folder

– Mouse over the “View” tab on the grey menu bar

– “View Folder” and a list of your folders will appear

– Left click on the folder you want to open

of the references you would like to copy to another folder

– Use the “Organization & Share Folder” icon folder drop down menu to select the folder where the references will be copied

– Once a folder is selected, a message will appear in the lower right of your screen which says “Completed” # items moved to “folder name”

Check CU holdings– Click on the green “360” circle under a citation

to check for Creighton Libraries holdings

RefWorks Tips– The “Firefox” for Windows machines works

best with RefWorks unless you have upgraded your computer to Windows 7. The Safari browser works best with Macs

– Open & search your databases before opening RefWorks

– When finished with RefWorks be sure to click on the “Log out” in the upper right corner before closing your window.

– If the RefWorks does not respond, try clicking on “Log out” a couple of times then close the window.

• Click on the pencil icon to see the complete record and edit the information in any record field

• Use pull-down menus to find other options

• You can attach electronic copy of a document, graphic or picture to a record

• Use the “Browse” button to find your attachment

• Hit the “Save Reference” or “Save & Add New” button on the lower right side

Bringing in Records from CINAHL

– Open your “Firefox” browser & run a search in CINAHL

– Select a few citations records– Click on “Folder View” on the right side

– Check the box next to “Select” above the list of citations & left click the “Export” icon on the right margin.

– Left click on the “Save” button. (Note the default is “Direct Export to RefWorks” which is what you want.)

– You will have to login to RefWorks for the first group of citations that you send over.

– Click on the “View Last Imported Folder” button on the lower right to view your citations.

– You will see a list or your citations. Click on the “All in List” button and use the pull-down menu next to the folder icon to move your citations into a specific folder.

– Left click on a folder from the listing on the right to see the records in it.

Be sure to always move your new records into a folder or the next group you bring in will push the older ones out from the “Last Imported” folder. If you want to import more records, just minimize RefWorks and go back to your database.

– Left click on the “Back” button to go back to your list of previously imported citations.

– Check the box next to “Select” and left click on the “Delete Items” to clear the old citations. Hit the “Back” button to get back to your main results page.

Continue to select your next group of records to import into RefWorks.

RefWorksWrite-N-Cite (WNC)

• Allows you to – insert citations to a word

document that you have saved in a RefWorks folder

– Create references in your document

– Formats your citations in a the style of your choice, such as APA

• Creates bibliographies

Using Write-N-Cite (WNC) to Insert Citations & Create

Bibliographies• Write-N-Cite (WNC)

– Only compatible with Microsoft Word– Compatible with Internet Explorer and

Safari browsers. (NOTE: you must use Internet Explorer to do the initial download & set-up for WNC but this may change with the next WNC upgrade.)

– Needs to be downloaded and configured for off-campus access (if applicable)

– Be sure to restart your computer right after loading WNC

check the RefWorks page on the Library’s web page for instruction on how to load

– You will need access to the Internet to use this program.

Word– Title your document and save it– When you want to add a reference,

hit the space bar– Click on the “Add-Ins” tab

Using WNC with Microsoft Word– If you don’t have and “Add-Ins” tab

check your desktop or list of programs from the“Start” button on the lower right of your computer for the WNC icon

– Click on the right WNC toolbar button

RefWorks WNC– Place you cursor where in document you want

the citation to go and hit the space bar one time– Log into RefWorks’ WNC– Use the View menu in WNC if you would like to

select a specific folder of references – Click the Cite link next to the correct reference

RefWorks WNC– Minimize WNC– After you click on the Cite link, WNC inserts

a “placeholder” citation into your paper – this will be formatted later, according to the output (citation) style selected

When you have finished writing your paper save the document

• Bring the WNC window back up• Click on the “Bibliography” tab

RefWorks WNC• WNC will give you a “no errors” message• Click on the “Back to Reference List• Minimize WNC• Check the document for mistakes including citations format• Save your revised document with a different name• Close WNC when you are finished

RefWorks “Must Do’s”

You must first create a RefWorks database before using Write-N-Cite to insert citations into your text and/or create bibliographies. Any item that is to be used with Write-N-Cite must first be in your RefWorks database.

– Tools– select Pop-Up Blocker– turn off Pop-Up Blocker, as needed

“Block pop-ups” box – it should be unchecked)

“Disable” for the pop-up blocker

• Also, turn off any pop-up blockers that come with any toolbars you may have, such as Google or Yahoo! Toolbars

• Make RefWorks a “Trusted Site” in your browser– Click on Tools in your web browser– Click on Internet Options– Click on Security– Click on the Trusted Site check

*Remember, any individual with Internet access may be a RefShare recipient; the recipient does not need to have a RefWorks account in order to receive shared folders.

• Online tutorials and online help can be located at the RefWorks page on the Health Sciences Library website

• Go to http://hsl.creighton.edu and locate the gray RefWorks tab
