Wedding Ministry The celebration of weddings is a very important ministry here. The beauty of the church attracts many who wish to celebrate the beginning of their married lives. A wedding ministry would: Help with rehearsals and planning Welcome couples and families on the day of wedding Prepare our church for the celebrations Help with Eucharistic ministry at nuptial Masses

Ministry Report I am happy to report that since I began posting some ministry needs there has been a won-derful response. We now have quite a group of Basilica docents, people who will give tours and guide the visitors to our wonderful and historic church. We also now have a good group of ministers of consolation, who along with Sister Barbara will help families prepare funeral masses and also act as liturgical ministers on the day of the funeral itself. I am still hoping to establish a Wedding Ministry. This is a slow time for weddings at SHJM but the spring and summer soon will be here and I hope by then to have this minis-try established. You can read a description below and be in touch if you are interested. [email protected]

Keeping Our History As we celebrate the first year of the dedication of SHJM as a basilica I invite everyone to take

a trip into their attics and photo albums! We would like to compile a history of our parish

through stories, pictures, news clippings, announcements, and even video. If you have and

memorable images or reminders from our history please share them with us. You may dedicate

them to our archive or simply have us copy and return the item to you. Who knows! Maybe

you have a old movie clip that will remind us all of part of SHJM history. For information

contact Fr. Mike or Gina Arresta at the rectory.

In Celebration of the Year of Faith our parish welcomes parishioner George Sim Johnston as part of our Adult Faith Formation Series. Date: November 26 7-8 PM in the Basilica

The Catholic Church at the Dawn of the New Millennium

There have been three great teaching events for Catholics during the past fifty

years. The Second Vatican Council and the pontificates of John Paul II and

Benedict XVI. Vatican II was an unusual council, since unlike the previous

twenty ecumenical gatherings going back to Nicaea in 325 A.D., it was

summoned when there was no apparent crisis in the Church. Everything

“seemed” fine. And yet Vatican II was a necessary response to modernity,

and in its aftermath we’ve been blessed with two great teaching pontificates

back-to-back. The Catholic Church now proposes a highly attractive

Christian humanism that is not yet much understood either by Catholics or the

larger world. We’ll look at the reasons why Pope John XXIII called the

council and how the two most recent popes – both extraordinary thinkers – have positioned the Church

for the future.

Thanksgiving Mass

Please join us on Thursday, November 22 at 10

AM to celebrate Thanksgiving Day. This year

is of special significance to us because it was

just one year ago, on November 21, 2011, that

our parish was declared to be a Basilica

church by Pope Benedict XVI. I invite you to come to this special mass, to bring

your family and friends, and to bring a gift for our food pantry. I also invite you to

bring something from your table to bless — a loaf of bread, a bottle of wine, a treat

to share. In this way you can unite your thanksgiving table with the altar of thanks-

By Juan J. Sosa, Pbro., from Liturgia y Canción 2012 © 2011, OCP. All rights reserved
