Pastor’s Corner My Dear Friends, This weekend, Catholic Christians celebrate the 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus tells us, “…anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14: 33).
This Monday, Americans celebrate Labor Day. This holiday, which occurs on the first Monday of September each year, became a national holiday in 1894 to honor the achievements and sacrifices of American workers, especially those in non-management types of jobs. Of all the blessings we can have, a job ranks very high on the list. Let’s give thanks for the jobs we have, while praying for those people in the world who are unemployed or underemployed. We have been enjoying very much Fr. Gustavo’s visit, and he is very grateful for his stay with us. He will be going back to Honduras this Thursday, September 9th with many fond memories. Don’t forget that our St. Mary Fall Festival is right around the corner. Please make plans to join us on Saturday, September 24th for a fun-filled day! Sincerely yours in Christ, - Father Bob

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – September 3 and September 4, 2016 6
Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Mary Social Ministry/Tileston Outreach As we officially close the “summer season” this weekend we hear a very somber message from Jesus. If you want to be one on my disciples, then you have to carry your cross, just as I carried mine, is His message to each one of us. Come Tuesday, we will be back in full swing at the Outreach, with painted pipes and new closet space and clean areas to house our food, clothing and household items. We will be open for business and will be receiving calls to pick up donated items that help us set up good living space for our guests. Our Work for Rent program is rather specific to the Outreach and it takes an incredible amount of organization from MaryAnn Kotas and her team. We recycle furniture items that cover chairs, couches, beds, dressers, lamps, tables, chairs, washer/dryers, stoves and even a refrigerator or two or three! This past year we did 197 pick-ups of donations. Three mornings a week a volunteer driver, along with two of our guests, pick-up and deliver what we receive. We pay our guests $10 an hour and the check either goes for rent or gasoline. (Tolly who runs Shop N’Go on 17th and Market takes our check and that is a blessing to us and those we serve for which we are so very grateful.) For the past several years this Program has benefited from our semi-annual Yard Sale. The several thousand dollars that is raised at each sale provides the funds we give to our worker-guests, and gasoline and maintenance for the Parish Truck. Dave and Marie King and the many, many volunteers who assist them pull this all together and our Yard Sale, which is coming up in October is recognized as one of the best in the area. How can it be anything but that when so much love and hard work go into it? Yes, lots of crosses, but also a lot of resurrection stories as well!

8 Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – September 3 and September 4, 2016 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Principal Joyce M. Price
"Let your light so shine..." Matthew 5:16 It was wonderful seeing all of you during our orientation evenings. Life is now back in the hallways as your children have shared their en-thusiasm for school with us the last couple of days. Mrs. Linn asks that you please return the Orientation Packets if you have not done so already. Our Library will be closed for the next week as materials are moved out and the shelves are reorganized. Mrs. Parker will be working with Mr. Hogan in the library this year. I am pleased to report that all of the teachers have been hired for this school year. Last week I introduced the new 3rd grade teacher who graduated from UNC-Charlotte and has 4 years experience teaching 3rd grade. Mrs. Amanda Baldwin will now join us on Tuesday, Sept. 6th, as her principal has been able to hire a replacement. When Mrs. Baldwin joins us, Mrs. Aiken will begin the Title I Resource Program.
I have also hired Mrs. Erin Ebbing to teach one class of Math in the 6th grade. Mrs. Ebbing has earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from George Fox University. She holds an Oregon Teaching License.
St. Mary School Athletics FALL SPORTS: Our fall sports have begun but it’s not too late to join in on the fun. If you daughter is in the 6-8 grade they can participate on our volleyball team or our tennis team. If you son or daughter is in the 4th thru 8th grade they can be a member of our cross country pro-gram. If they are interested contact me, Tony Viollis at [email protected]. They need to fill out our three required forms before participating. You can pick them up in the school office, see me, or go online to my athletic web site and download them. VOOLUNTEERING FOR HOME GAMES: All parents of athletes will be required to work at least one home contest. This is so parents of players can watch their child play as well as helping out our athletic teams. If you are just interested in helping I would love to see you and have you at our games. Below is our signup genius for home games please click on the below and sign up. Hope to see you and your child at our games!!! http://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b054baaac2ea46-falcons OUR FALCON HAS LANDED!!!! Over the summer our school mas-cot has found its way home and forgot his or her name…So we are going to have a contest to name our falcon and look for someone who would like to wear our new exciting mascot uniform at home contests. You can see him on our athletic booster face book page. If you are interested in wearing our outfit let me know and we will see how it fits you!!!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!! FUND RAISER EVENTS: As of now we will not be having a golf outing or our Luv 2 Run 5-K run. This is due to no one stepping up to help out in chairing the events or just assisting in being on a commit-tee. If you would like these events to continue and raise money to con-tinue to make improvements to our programs and gym please reach out to me, see me during our open house or drop me a line. I hate to see these money makers just stop and our hard work to improve our gym and program come to a halt. GAME SCHEDULES: I have put our team schedules on our school athletic calendar. This can be found off our school main page. The schedule is subject to change. Please bring your child tour games, all students are free and can get snacks at our concession stand during games as long as we have volunteers to work the venue. Also please visit us on our athletic boosters face book page for more information.
Mrs. Watts is busy assuming her new role as Assistant Principal. Some of her responsibilities are testing program, Religion Coordinator, Writ-ing Coordinator, Opportunity Scholarships, Duke Talent Search, class scheduling, duty schedules.
