    England basketball

Basketball, although invented in theUnited States, has a very long history inEngland, having been

introduced there by theYMCAalmost immediatelyafter it was created.World War IandIIfurther spurredits popularity. The four highest profile team sports inthe United Kingdom arefootball, cricket, rugbyunionandrugby league. Basketball belongs to thenext tier alongsideice hockey; it has a dedicatedfollowing, but attracts little coverage from the majorBritish media outlets.

The elite league is the fully professionalBritishBasketball League, featuring teamsfromEnglandandScotland, while the semi-professionalEnglish Basketball Leagueeffectivelyforms the second-tier. There is no promotion orrelegation between the two leagues because the BBLoperates afranchisesystem whereby teams have to"buy into" the league.

    China basketball

In all the world,Chinaembraced basketball early on,during the Qing Dynasty, not long afterDr.Naismithwrote theOriginal Rulesin 1891.Naismith and theInternational YMCA Training

Schoolwere in the business of producing Christianmissionaries and that time many missions werelocated in China. Some of Naismith's original playersended up in China. Hence, China began its love affairwith basketball long before most European countrieshad heard of the sport.

Basketball in China started in the YMCAs. Dr.WillardLyonfounded the first YMCA in China (in Tientsin, now called Tianjin). OnDecember 5, 1895, Lyonpresided over the first game of basketball played inChina, at the Tianjin YMCA. TheNankai Five

Tigers() team trained there, too.In 1910 the YMCA organized the first national athleticcompetition in China, in Nanking. Basketball was oneof the sports. While the games were organized byAmericans, the athletes were all Chinese.

These YMCA activists were also responsible fororganizing the firstFar Eastern Championship Games, first held in Manila, Philippines in 1913. Shanghai

hosted the 1915 games. Chinese President Sun Yixian(Sun Yat-Sen) remarked on the ability of these gamesto unite athletes from Canton, Shanghai and Peking --regions known to feud -- to compete for one China.

The YMCA movement in China reached a peak in 1918when it established a university to train Chinesephysical education instructors. The school failed forfinancial reasons. Changes in personnel, combinedwith a rising tide of anti-Americanism, caused the

YMCA to pull back in China. By 1927 they were nolonger a force on the Chinese athletic scene.

In 1921 China upset thePhilippinesin thechampionship game of the Far Eastern Games, capturing their first gold medal in basketball.SunLiren, star of the Qinghua University team and futureNationalist Army commander, led the team to thishistoric triumph.

Shanghai's St. John's University, coached byPhillipB. Sullivan, won the 1923 national championship andrepresented China at the 1923 Far Eastern Games, where they finished with the silver medal. Theybecame the team to beat in China and Japan, until thecivil war disrupted athletics in 1927.

    France basketball

Basketball was invented in North America in the late19th century, and it quickly became popular in manycountries around the world. In Europe, basketballbecame popular in the early 20th century, along withthe closely related sport of netball. In France, basketball became organized from the 1930s onward, with both men's and women's teams competing

    nationally and internationally.

In 1932, the Fdration Franaise de Basket-Ball(FFBB) was formed. The European establishment ofthe International Basketball Federation (FIBA)happened that year as well. In 1933, the FFBB becamepart of FIBA. A French national basketball team tookpart in EuroBasket 1935, finishing fifth of 10 teams. Inthe 1936 Olympic Games (in which the sport ofbasketball was admitted for the first time) the Frenchnational team finished 20th of 21 teams. In 1937 and1939, the French team improved its performance in

the EuroBasket tournament, finishing third and fourth, respectively.

Germany basketballThe history of basketball in Germany goes back to the1950s. However, there were two different Germanbasketball teams that were formed: the West Germanynationalbasketball team and the East Germanynational basketball team which is also known as theGerman Democratic Republic national basketball

team. The two German teams competed against eachother since the year 1955 until 1973.The East German team stopped playing in leaguesbecause in 1969, the Socialist Unity Party of Germanydecided to participate in sports that were most likelyto win medals and earn points at internationalcompetitions.

The Germanys national basketball team representedthe German Democratic Republic in the years 1955 upto 1973. The team did not participate in any SummerOlympic tournaments and in any FIBA WorldChampionship tournaments because they were neverqualified to neither of the said internationaltournaments; they only participated in the European

Championships, otherwise known as the EuroBasket.

In the ten years of the existence of the EastGermany team, they only have five appearances in theEuroBasket. Unlike the West Germanynational basketball team, the East Germany

national basketball team qualified to participate at the1959 EuroBasket held at Istanbul. The teams greatestachievement was at the 1963 EuroBasket in Breslau,

where they went as the third seed in Group B,however ended up as the 6th placer overall.

    SHOES

Basketball shoes range from the classic to the cool.

Whether you sport the original canvas high tops onthe court, or the latest leather look, a peak at theirbeginnings and a little information about choosing

the right shoe can enhance our appreciation ofthem and make the game fun while you shoot fornumber one.Like many other popular sporting

goods apparel, basketball shoes were designed forthe sole purpose of outfitting the feet for the

game, allowing for high jumps and fancymaneuvers, but wound up being a part of everyday

life.Basketball shoes date back to the 1920s. If our

grandparents still remember the first shoes wornon the basketball court, the original Chuck Taylorby Converse would likely come to mind. For more

than 40 years the classic canvas tennis with rubbersoles were the best-selling basketball shoe in thecountry, with sales topping 600 million pairs.

Canvas was IT, until durable, leather sneakers

began to eclipse them in the 1960s. Many brandsput out by Nike and Puma began to make theirmark on the basketball court, but the Conversemade popular by all-star basketball players wasstill number one.On the court since 1907,Converse became a name synonymous with

basketball. By about 1917, just about every

serious player had pair of All Stars on their feet. But with Converse becoming a household name,

you didn't have to be a star to be in the show.Justabout everyone owned a pair.Converse's authenticChuck Taylor All Stars was the first brand of

basketball shoe to dominate the game. Coming toprominence in the 1930s, Converse's classic high-

top designed to support the ankles for jumpinghigh set the standard for other reputable

manufacturers. Companies copied or competedwith the best-selling brand, coming up with newtrends and technology, but the original high-tops

remained on top.In the 1970s Nike dunked theirname in the basketball industry with their new

Blazer, the shoe with the "swoosh", as did Puma

with their signature low-top shoes. In the mid-to-late 70s Converse shot back with their newWeapons worn by Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

The 1980s saw some new Nike technology with theintroduction of the Air Force 1 and its legendary"air sole" with its classic leather design. In the mid-

1980s and the early 1990s rookie Michael Jordan

gave different brands a name in the basketballindustry, starting with his "too colorful" signaturewarm-ups that wound up banned from the court. What followed was Adidas' Ewings, which brokeaway from the giant manufacturer to stand on itsown two feet, simply calling itself "The

Ewings".Jordan began to put his own name on

basketball shoes, the Air Jordan series. The nextdecade launched the Original Pump creating a rival

between top-selling manufactures competing forbest-selling models. But Air Jordan kept its positionat the top while other manufactures experimented

with all sorts of trendy bells and whistles designsand innovative technologies, but the bottom line

remained under Jordan's feet. What some criticscall "the Golden Era" of basketball (1994-98)

turned out to be a time of experiment withalternatives from what the world had grownaccustomed to. During this time, it was 'everything

goes'. New high tech designs using newermaterials gave just about every manufacturer a

chance to shine. With the dawn of a new century of

basketball, the name of the game was "retro". Shyof any new superstars setting new standards, manufacturers reverted to classic models. Labels

experienced a lull, and the Air Jordan series wasback. As were other manufactures. The biggestinnovation of the new era may well have been the

Shox BB4 made popular by star Vince Carter's

seven-foot jump during the 2000 Olympics. Thatlaunched a new revival among rival manufacturersfor newer, better technologies.Converse stays inthe shoe game but is now owned by Nike. Justwhere basketball shoes will run with the superstarsnext, remains to be seen.Choosing the Right

Basketball ShoesGetting the right fit is paramount

to choosing the right basketball shoe. As with anycourt sport, a comfortable foot means a better

performance and fewer injuries. Basketball shoesare fundamentally designed to support the ankle.Low as well as high tops should provide comfort as

well as support. Look for shoes with skid-freesoles, and make sure they are the proper fit. The

one finger rule applies to shopping for basketballshoes. If you can slip your finger between your

ankle and the back of the shoe you have a goodfit. Good- supporting shoes will allow all themaneuvers with none of the pain, even when

  • 7/29/2019 Basket Bal

    14/24

they're brand new. Take the shoes for a spinaround the store, make a fool of yourself. Try

before you buy. Do some high and low jumps,

dribble an invisible ball. Circle and dive aroundyour imaginary teammates and competitors andsee how it feels. If it feels right, then buy it. Don't

fall for gimmick designs that promise performance. The proof isn't in the look, but in the feel of theshoe. Good luck, and have fun on the court.

    JERSEYS:

As with early baseball attire, the first basketball jerseys

were made of wool. Wool jerseys gave way to polyester,

which was lighter in weight but not a very breathable

fabric. In the early days of the National BasketballAssociation, teams were thinking less of player comfort

and more of the durability of their uniforms, according to

the Dime Magazine website. The athletes might have only

a couple of uniforms that were expected to last through at

    least one season.

In the early 1980s, the MacGregor Sand-Knit became the

NBA's exclusive outfitter. The company's use of a new,

more breathable cotton/polyester blend meant that jerseys

controlled moisture better. Although fabric kept improving,

  • 7/29/2019 Basket Bal

    15/24

jerseys were still only offered in standard sizes. But during

the late 1980s, uniform manufacturers began giving

players options to meet specific needs, such as a looser

jersey to facilitate movement. Teams also began addingmore details and elaborate graphics to jerseys. Clothing

became a marketing tool for the NBA, as replicas of

famous players' jerseys became immensely popular status

symbols with fans in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The

NBA began including the League's logo on uniforms in

    1986.

As new fabric technologies have become available,

basketball jerseys are increasingly softer and more

breathable. They have also became lighter, since new

digital methods of adding graphics to fabric mean that

layers of tackle twill, or embroidery, are no longer

necessary. It has became common practice for teams to

have multiple uniforms for home and away games, and

even "themed" uniforms for holidays or other special

occasions. Whereas in the past, jerseys tended to be

designed for tall, lean players, today they are are looser

and made to accommodate more muscular players of

varying sizes, according to the Real Sports Jerseyswebsite

Originally, an NBA team's uniforms were manufactured by

a local vendor, so that one team's jersey might look quite

  • 7/29/2019 Basket Bal

    16/24

different from another's. In the 1960s, however, teams

began to use a common vendor. It also became common

to add players' name to jerseys, giving NBA jerseys a

more consistent appearance. One of the mostrecognizable jersey numbers of basketball or any other

sport -- 23 -- was held by the Chicago Bulls' Michael

Jordan, commonly regarded as one of the greatest

    athletes of the 20th century.

    balls:

A basketball is a spherical inflatedballused in the game

ofbasketball. Basketballs typically range in size from very

small promotional items only a few inches in diameter to

extra large balls nearly a foot in diameter used in training

exercises to increase the skill of players. The standard

size of a basketball in theNBAis 29.5 to 29.875 inches

    (75 to 75.88 cm) incircumference.[1]

Nearly all basketballs have an inflatable

innerrubberbladder, generally wrapped in layers of fiber

and then covered with a tacky surface made either

fromleather(traditional), rubber, or a synthetic composite.

As in most inflatable balls, there is a small opening that

allows the pressure to be increased or decreased. The surface of the ball is nearly always divided by "ribs"

traditional color scheme of basketballs but they are sold in

    various colors.

Balls are generally designated for indoor (generally made

of leather or absorbent composites), or all-surface use(generally made of rubber or durable composites, also

known as Indoor/Outdoor balls). Indoor balls tend to be

considerably more expensive than all-surface balls due to

cost of materials. In addition, brand new all-leather indoor

balls must be "broken in" first to achieve optimal grip

before use in competition. The abrasiveness of asphalt

and the dirt and moisture present in an outdoor setting will

usually ruin an indoor ball within a very short period of

time, which is why an indoor/outdoor ball is recommended

    for recreational players.

Aside from the court and the baskets, the basketball is the

only piece of equipment necessary to play the game of

basketball. During the game, the ball must be bouncedcontinuously (dribbling), thrown through the air to other

players (passing) and towards the basket (shooting).

Therefore, the ball must be very durable and easy to hold

on to. The basketball is also used to perform tricks

(sometimes called freestyling), the most common of which

are spinning the ball on the tip of one's index finger,

dribbling in complex patterns, rolling the ball over one'sshoulder, or performing aerobatic maneuvers with the ball

while executing aslam dunk, most notably in the context

    of aslam dunk contest.

touching or closer to the basket than thethree-point line, and three points (known commonly as a 3 pointerorthree)if the player is behind the three-point line. The team with

the most points at the end of the game wins, but additionaltime (overtime) may be issued when the game ends with adraw. The ball can be advanced on the court by bouncingit while walking or running (dribbling) or throwing (passing)it to a team mate. It is a violation to move without dribblingthe ball (travelling), tocarryit, or to hold the ball with bothhands then resume dribbling (double dribble).

Variousviolationsare generally called "fouls". Disruptivephysical contact (apersonal foul) is penalized, and a freethrowis usually awarded to an offensive player if he isfouled while shooting the ball. Atechnical foulmay also beissued when certain infractions occur, most commonlyforunsportsmanlike conducton the part of a playerorcoach. A technical foul gives the opposing team a freethrow, and the opposing team is also retained possession

    of the ball.

Basketball has evolved many commonly used techniquesof shooting, passing, dribbling, and rebounding, as well asspecializedplayer positionsand offensive and defensivestructures (player positioning) and techniques. Typically, the tallest members of a team will play "center", "powerforward" or "small forward" positions, while shorter players

or those who possess the best ball handling skills andspeed play "point guard" or "shooting guard".
