Quito is the main base for many professional teams that have played national and international tournaments. Participants will have the chance to assist coaching at USFQ (Universidad San Francisco de Quito) during the mornings. The University’s mission is to strength the students’ ideas, education and look after their well-being. During the afternoons participants will train with the most successful professional team in Quito, UTE’s basketball team. UTE (Universidad Tecnologica Equinoccial) is a university located in the north of Quito. UTE Sports Club started on October of 1985. The mission was to bring awareness to college students about the importance of fitness and sports in their personal growth, health and lives. UTE Sports Club has various teams for different sports. Their most awarded and famous team is the basketball one. In 2007 to 2008 UTE was the champion of 7 out of 8 tournaments played. Participants will be training alongside with former and current players of the Ecuadorian national team and international players. Participants will refine the fundamentals of the sport, dribbling, passing, position holding, set plays and shooting. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS *Enjoy living in the capital city of Ecuador. This beautiful city will take you back through 500 years of history, cultural sites and places you will never forget. Quito has colonial churches, structures and historical sites of hundred of years such as La Iglesia de San Francisco, La Plaza de la Independencia, the mighty Basilica and more. * You can’t miss the Teleferico. This is a sky tram that takes passengers up the flanks of the Pichincha Volcano to the top of Cruz Loma. The view from here is something spectacular. * Adjacent to the Old City in Quito, El Panecillo is a large hill on top of which a large statute of the Virgin of Quito sits and is visible from miles around. From the top there are marvellous views of the whole city and the volcanoes.

* Just outside of Quito is where measurement were first made that proved the shape of the Earth is in fact an oblate spheroid. Commemorating this, there is a large monument that straddles the equator called Mitad del Mundo- you cant miss stepping on both the northern and southern hemispheres. *Take a weekend tour to and hike the Cotopaxi volcano. The Cotopaxi National Park is located in the “Avenue of the Volcanoes” a breathtaking place. Hike to the glaciers and enjoy the view!

USFQ’s Sports Department offers various types of sports for their students to choose from. The University’s mission is to strengthen the students’ ideas, education and look after their well-being. The students’ ages vary from 18 years old to adult students. UTE Sports Club offers various sports options to its participants. The basketball team is open to individuals from the ages 18 to 30. All of their team players have professional experience in the game. They organize games for professional and non-professional players at various levels. 2. SERVICES THAT THE ORGANIZATION/INSTITUTION PROVIDES (DESCRIPTION) USFQ’s Sports Department offers classes of: aerobics, trekking, basketball, diving, capoeira, soccer, swimming, Tae Kwon Do, volleyball, Tai-Chi and more. UTE Sports Club has professional teams in various sports such as volleyball, basketball, football, Tae Kwon Do, hockey, weights and more. Most of their teams especially the basketball team has been champion in national and international tournaments.

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION 3. How many volunteers can the Project employ monthly? This program can have up to 3 volunteers at a time. 4. Has the organization received volunteers in the past? USFQ and UTE have worked with foreign players. 5. If it has received volunteers in the past, please write since what month and year: USFQ and UTE have worked with foreign players since their clubs were founded. 6. Are there any special features to which the volunteers have to pay attention to when

working at this project? (Religion, illnesses, extra-vaccination, etc) At USFQ participants need to be comfortable assistant coaching students from ages from 18 to 35 years old. At UTE participants need to be aware that they will be training with a professional team. A high level of basketball is expected. 7. Are there any requirements to attend this program? Participants must have intermediate, advance or professional basketball experience (especially for training at UTE). Intermediate experience is enough to assistant coach. 8. The project receives volunteers all year round? No, the program closes for holidays.

No maximum 12. Please give detailed description of tasks and duties of the volunteer: Assistant Coach The Assistant Coach will be the main support for the Head Coach during basketball classes. Participants will be teaching main drills and skills to the students. The students’ basketball level is beginner to intermediate, so the Assistant Coach will have the chance to work one to one with the students and help them improve their skills in the sport. Volunteers will be working on basic and specific drills and techniques focusing on passes, dribbling, shootings, speed and flexibility. During special basketball events at the USFQ, volunteers will be given the option to help organize the matches, keep track of the score, work at the referee table and take pictures as well as to videotape the games. TRAINING Participants will be part of all practice sessions. Practice sessions include warm up routines, fitness work and drills. Participants will be part of different drills to improve skills and techniques to better their play. Participants will help with the organization of local tournaments and competitive matches. If the level of the participant is high, they could be considered part of the team and play local matches and tournaments. Training focuses on: perfection dribbling, passing, positions holding, set plays and shooting. Being effective, defence and fundamental skills are things that are practiced during training. Learn about techniques of defence and offence. In training and at games statistics about each player are kept. Different fitness tests take place to measure the condition of each player. Each player is asked to do weight training on their own time to improve their physical state. All the drills are focused to help improve speed, flexibility, shooting, defence, passes, dribbling, court tactics and more. 13. 16. DESCRIBE THE SORROUNDINGS OF THE PROJECT (country side, urban, town) USFQ is located in the valley of Cumbaya only 25 minutes away from Quito. This is a suburban residential area. The basketball court is inside of the facilities and it’s a closed court. UTE Sports Club is located in Quito in a residential neighborhood in the north area of Quito, only 20 minutes away from the Mariscal area. The basketball court is inside of the university training takes place on closed courts.

ACCOMODATIONS AND MEALS 17. Type of Accommodation? Volunteers will be staying at a home stay. All home stays are located in good residential neighbourhoods of Quito. Home stays have been selected after an application process to make sure they have everything you need. 18. Are meals included? Breakfast and dinner is included at the home stay.
