I love to see the sweet signs ofspring appearing at this time ofyear, I’m always inspired towalk around our beautiful parksand countryside seeking outthe clusters of spring flowersand listening to the happy anduplifting bird songs. One of myfavourite walks in April isthrough Foxwoods inRhiwderin, the intense scentof the carpet of bluebells isdelightful, it’s so calming tojust stand and be still amongst thebluebells and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.
Wishing you all a Happy Easter.

To reach the village of Skenfrith, continue along the B4347 forabout 3½ miles and at the cross-roads turn left onto the B4521and continue for ½ a mile toreach Skenfrith. The name ofSkenfrith may be translated fromthe Welsh, Ynys Cynfraeth, as theisland where Cynfraeth (a 6thCentury Welsh Chieftain) builthis fortress. The castle, mill, church and inn make anattractive centre of the littlevillage.Soon after entering the village theremains of the old castle will beseen. This was one of the firstcastles to be constructed in thecounty, and the first owner wasBach, the brother of Aeddanowner of Grosmont. This firstcastle was probably a simplewooden construction situated onan earthen mound. After theNorman Conquest, the castle wasgained by Hamelyn the conquerorof Gwent and then passed to hisnephew Brian de Wallingford. Itcontinued to change handsfrequently in Norman days, evenbeing sold by King John to SirWilliam de Braose, Lord ofAbergavenny, for three steeds andten greyhounds. The castle wasvalued for its strategic position butused mainly as a garrison, sopossesses little of the romantichistory of some of the later castles. In 1200 the castle was rebuilt instone by Hubert de Burgh tobecome a powerful fortress, plainly
built with circular towers at thecorners of the rectangleformed by the curtain walls. At some point, during the re-building work, there was aheavy flood in the low-lyingvalley which caused thecastle to be severelyinundated by the risingwaters. Hubert then filledthe interior of the first castlewith river gravel and commencedto build a new castle on top of theoriginal. Archaeological diggingin the 1950s actually exposed thewell-preserved remains of the firstcastle hall, which had been buriedin the gravel from 1220.The main entrance to the newcastle was formed through thenorth curtain wall, accessing thecentral Keep. It was circular inplan, with three storeys and abasement used as a dungeon or for
storage. The River Monnow guards theeastern facade and the curtainwalls were originally moated, utilising water taken from theriver. The millrace, to the localwater mill, was at one time part ofthe castle moat. There would, originally, have been a drawbridgeacross the moat accessing thecastle entrance. The mill is locatedon the south side of the castle onthe site of the medieval mill.

Skenfrith Castle
The Welsh Triangle‘y Tair Tref’skenfrith
Skenfrith Castle Keep
Skenfrith church has an attractivehalf-timbered tower with awooden dovecote roof, and isagain quite large for what is now asmall village. It is medieval inorigin dating from about 1168,extended in the 14th century andalso in the 16th century. It waslater restored in 1896 and again in1909. The construction is of oldred sandstone, with a two aislenave, a chancel and west towertopped with a dovecote belfry.
Inside the church is a finely carvedaltar tomb, which is the monumentof John Morgan, the last castlegovernor in the 16th Century, andalso his wife Anne. Notice also theoak Governor's pew, standingaside from the more recentordinary pews. A glass-frontedcase, mounted on the wall, contains an ecclesiastical copemade from coloured silks. It hasbeen suggested that it was madeand given by Queen Eleanor, wifeof King Henry III, when lodging atthe castle, whilst her husband wasfighting the Welsh. However, expert modern opinion dates thecope to the late 15th Century. The church is dedicated to StBridget of Kildare an Irish saintfrom Kildare, where she had beenan abbess for a monastery thatunusually catered for both men
and women. Her effigy can be seenon the gable over the entranceporch. Just inside the porch islocated the remains of an early13th Century Holy Water stoup. The church also was rebuilt instone by Hubert de Burgh in the13th Century. De Burgh wasresident and Lord of the manor atthat date, later becoming ChiefJusticar under Henry III.Skenfrith churchhas a peal of six
bells and the village inn, adjacentto the Monnow Bridge, isappropriately named ‘The Bell’. Theinn was once a 17th centurycoaching inn and was tastefullyrestored in 2001. It has flagstone
floors, oak beams, antique andperiod furniture. There are elevenguest rooms with en-suitebathrooms, the restaurant has wonawards and has an excellent winelist, all making it a comfortableplace to stay. The proprietors of thehotel have created some interestingcircular walks, starting from andreturning to the Hotel. A map anda guide describing the footpathsand identifying points of interestsin the locality are provided.
Having
completed ourexploration of Skenfrith we willnext continue on to the final castleof the Trilateral – White Castle.

FREE EASTER EGG-STRAVAGANZA
ACTIVITY DAYSFun for all the family from the 3rd-14th April
Pre-historic visitors, Easter egg trail, craft workshops & lots more egg-citing activities
1050 SPACESCAR PARK
The second half of 2017brought a varied selection ofoutings for GG. In September,we travelled to Barry and theAmelia Trust Farm for theirHarvest Festival Open day, which is the biggest fund raiserof the year. This was a returnvisit, and the previous year wehad danced in June in thesunshine at their summer fete, but unfortunately on 9thSeptember the weather wasvery changeable and thedecision was made to clear aspace inside, with some of thecraft stalls, for us and the TaiKwando demonstration thatfollowed us. We displayed afew of our traditional Welshdances and then got some ofthe audience (mainly children)to join in with us for somesimple ceilidh dances.Later in September on the 28thwe paid a return visit to RiscaU3A’s monthly social meeting togive them a taste of Welshculture, which included somedance displays and a chance forU3A members to join in. Thesession was once again puttogether by Barbara Griffiths withdance instructor Ceri, and shewas able to re-use that format, translated into Welsh, for anevening at Stow Park ChurchCentre with Newport WelshSociety on October 20th, andvery successful it was too. Before that, on October 17th, wetravelled to Shirenewton to theprimary school
as part of one of thechildren’senrichmentsessions. Thechildren get tochoose whichsubjects theywould like forthese sessions, and dance isone of thecategories on offer. We gavedance displays to two sets ofchildren, got them to join in, andBarbara interspersed this withsome oral Welsh culture. Our final booking of the yearcame on a very snowy 13thDecember at Llanhilleth MinersInstitute, for Coleg Gwent’s adultWelsh learner’s Christmas party. The evening was very wellattended despite the weather, and well respected Welsh folksinger Gwilym Bowen Rhys waspart of the entertainment alongwith GG. Unfortunately, we had to
cut short ourprogramme as feeding 120people took a lot longer thananticipated, and the evening ranout of time. We only had a chanceto display three of our prepareddances, and then call just threedances in Welsh for a twmpath(ceilidh) that was supposed to lastwell over an hour. Disappointing, but as long as the audienceenjoyed what we did, we arehappy. We hope to be invitedback this year when hopefully thetimings will be better.
Gwerinwyr Gwent Diary
Gwerinwyr Gwent would love to recruit some new dancers, especially men! Welsh dance steps are basic and few, it is just thepatterns of the dances that need to be learned. We would also bevery pleased to encourage extra musicians to join our little band.Practice night is Thursday 8-10pm at the Graig Community Hall,Bassaleg (opposite the Ruperra Arms). Either just come along, ring 01495 271953 for more details, or check out our website
www.gwerinwyrgwent.org.uk or Facebook page.

In 1796, Edward Jones ofBristol leased, for a term of 21years, all veins of coal and ironore in 53 acres of land calledMachen Mountain, Waun Fawr,Coed Waun Fawr and land onthe east side of the Ebbw Riverin the tenure of RowlandPhillips, all within the parish ofMachen.
J ones expected his investmentto prove highly profitable dueto the imminent opening of the
Monmouthshire Canal, his leaseincluded a lower payment untilthe canal opened. However, hehad problems with the tenant ofRisca Farm (now Risca House)whose fields he had to cross. Hewrote to Sir Charles Morgan'When I took the colliery therewas no bridge over the river to goto it. I was consequently obligedto build a bridge, when I hadfinished it, Rowland Phillips wouldnot let me have a road throughhis farm to the bridge. I wasobliged to take the bridge downand rebuild it in another place, ata heavy expense, when I hadrebuilt the bridge he would not letme have a road through his farmto the canal until Sept 1798.’
He completed the balanced-worked gravity controlled inclineand tram road from his coalworkings across the river and upto the canal in March 1799. Later
in that year, William Coxe wastravelling around Monmouthshireand wrote 'On my way to Risca, Icrossed a bridge over a rail roadformed by Mr Edward Jones, twoparallel rail roads are carried fromthe canal to the opposite side ofthe Ebbw river, along which twocars are drawn up and let downat the same time by means of anengine; they appear to pass eachother alternately like buckets in awell, a boy descends with theempty car nearly midway, afteradjusting the machinery, it isagain drawn up with the loadedcar which empties the coals intothe boats of the canal.’
Further letters to Sir CharlesMorgan complained about thecanal being unusable for manydays of the year due to shortageof water in hot summers and icingup in cold winters. In July 1801 hewrote to Evan Phillips 'The canalis a bad business and until somealteration take place, I expect noprofit from Waunfawr.’ As a resultof his complaints Jones receivedsome reductions in his paymentsto Sir Charles Morgan and in1801, he obtained the tenancy ofRisca Farm moving in with hisfamily.
At a Select Committee of theHouses of Parliament in 1810,enquiring into the prices paid tocanal companies for shipping
coals and duties paid on coalsshipped from South Wales ports,Jones stated that he had takenseveral people into partnership inthe Waun Fawr Colliery in 1799and over £60,000 had been spentwithout any return of capital. Theyhad two steam engines, a largewater wheel, three miles of privaterail road and four inclined planes, one of which carried the coals upto the canal. There were fourshafts between 40 and 70 yardsdeep and three levels each abouta half-mile long. They raise about110 tons of coal per day. The pithas been overwhelmed withwater taking two years to get itout. The produce of this collieryhas not paid the wages byseveral thousand pounds for thelast five years.
Jones appears to have given upin 1812. By 1814 he was back inBristol trading as a coal merchantand in 1820 he moved to London.

Using a combination of Cognitive BehaviouralTherapy and Hypnotherapy the HypnoBand® isthe revoluntionary new weight loss systemdesigned for those who have a high Body MassIndex (BMI). It can help you change your eatinghabits and help you to achieve your goals. The key to success is YOU! No weight loss system
will work unless you are committed to losing weight.
You must be prepared to change your eating habits
and lifestyle. If you are totally serious about losing
weight then it could work for you. The HYPNO-
BAND system provides you with the tools and ability
to lose weight and maintain a healthier body.
Each session in the HYPNO-BAND system lasts for
one hour and before beginning the process a full
assessment will be carried out.
If you are over-weight and really want and are
committed to losing weight then this could be
suitable for you. The only exception would
be if there is a physiological reason for your
weight problems or if you are taking certain
medications.
Like any medical or therapy procedure there can
be no definite guarantees. Even a surgeon
cannot guarantee that an actual gastric band will
work. It should be reiterated that it is YOU
holding the key to losing weight. No system will
work if you are not 100% committed. The mind
is a very powerful instrument and by using the
HYPNO-BAND system you should have the
tools and power to change your eating
habits. The only way to lose significant
amounts of weight is to eat less!

During Spring we often have a goodsort out of the material things in ourlife but rarely do we consider clearing
our minds. Life is indeed a journey and aswe experience life we accumulate emotionalbaggage along the way. If this becomes toomuch to handle it can lead to problemswithin the mind and body such as anxiety, stress, phobias and illness.
At Lisa Pryce-Jones Hypnotherapy & Healing,
Lisa uses a combination of complementary
therapies to help you achieve better balance
within both your mind and body. This may
include Hypnotherapy and either Spiritual
Healing or Reiki. Lisa also uses a mindfulness
based behavioural therapy called Acceptance
and Commitment Therapy (known as ‘ACT’ but
pronounced as the word ‘act’) which helps to
guide you on a conscious level using your
personal values to create a richer and more
meaningful life.
Working on a sub-conscious level using
Hypnotherapy is far more powerful than the
conscious mind alone. Combined with the
universal energies of Spiritual Healing or Reiki
and ACT the client results achieved are often
life changing. Delighted clients have provided
many testimonials to this effect which are
shown on Lisa’s website.
You will be assured of a warm welcome, have
plenty of time to discuss your issues and have
a therapy plan devised to meet your needs and
help you to achieve your goals.
For further information please visitwww.hypnotherapyandhealing.co.uk or callLisa for a chat to discuss how Hypnotherapyand Healing could help you.

APART FROM THE MAJOR DAMAGE that continuesto be done to our local landscape by theinconsiderate minority with their off-road vehiclesthere is also the everyday wear and tear of thepathways by the footfall of the innocent visitor to thispopular beauty spot.
CTS often lobbies the local council and works with thecommoners to ensure serious scarring is effectively dealtwith and in the coming year CTS hopes to address theminor problems on our monthly volunteer days.
A recent meeting with Cadw identified areas where, particularly on the scheduled ancient monument itself, people tend to wander from the path and so start to widenand erode the path with their continual footfall. We will beeffecting repairs to these areas with seeded matting andsoil or rock infill.
With some repairs it may be necessary to cordonoff the area to allow the repair time to establish –it may look unsightly for a short while but thebenefits will soon become apparent. Soplease be considerate if you come acrossthese repairs and also be aware of anydamage you may be unwittingly creating yourself.
We’ve already got a long list of work for the comingyear and a short list of volunteers so if you fancy helpingout a little, get in touch or watch our website forannouncements of workdays planned.
A Busy YearAhead forTwmbarlwm
Any RoadUp…
CTS meet at the car park below Twmbarlwm’ssummit for a litter pick and volunteer workday on thelast Sunday of every month to which everyone isinvited, it’s not all hard work and it’s a greatopportunity to find your way around up there. Weorganise walks and other events up the mountain andat Crosskeys RFC throughout the year so watch ourwebsite and Facebook page for details – come andjoin us some time. www.twmbarlwm.co.uk
IT’S NEARLY THAT TIME of year again when all roadslead to Twmbarlwm. The 30th of March is Good Fridayand that’s when, according to local tradition, peoplefrom miles around come to trek to the summit of themountain like many generations before them have done.
We at the Twmbarlwm Society saw that thetradition was starting to wane a little and tenyears ago you would only see a couple ofdozen people up there on the day. We,therefore, hijacked the idea a few years ago
and made it our own with “The Hot-Cross-Bun Walk” – and nowadays there is likely to be
a few hundred people making the trek to the top. There are many different routes you can take, some
more arduous than others, and everyone has their ownfavourite route – you can even get most of the way thereby car, but that’s cheating. A few different routes aredescribed on our website.
CTS organises a group walk, leaving from the StonyBridge, Pontymister, that takes a direct route straight upthe hill through Ty-Sign, onto Mountain Road and so onto Twmbarlwm. Not the most picturesque to start withbut it is faithful to the route that pilgrims may have takencenturies ago on their way from Llantarnam to Penrhys.
The Friends of Cwmcarn Forest Drive will be leadinga group from the Cwmcarn Visitor Centre and there willbe other organised groups from Cwmbran – please visitour website for more details of the organised events.
We also want to encourage as many other groups aspossible to organise their own walk and use theoccasion to raise the profile of their organisation (carrya flag to let us know who you are) - get in touch with usand we will include your details on our website.
Most people still like to make their own way up theTump by their preferred route just like their parents andgrandparents did before them. We’ll be happy to seeyou however you get there – it’s always a great familyday out and CTS distributes hot cross buns to everyonewho makes the climb (on a first come first served basis).

Our Club has just celebrated 40years of bowling at Cefn Woodin Rogerstone. After many years of discussionand representations with NewportCouncil, local councillors andresidents in regarding the lack offacilities at the lower end ofRogerstone, it was decided tobuild a bowling green adjacent tothe primary school at Cefn Wood.In addition, money was set asideto build a play area in Cefn Woodfor the benefit of the youngpersons in the area.It was agreed that the changingfacilities would be within theschool complex for the BowlsClub and their visiting teams, thesupervision of which would becarried out by a Managerappointed by the Council, tooperate this mini leisure centre. The green was laid and opened in1976 (the year of the drought) andthroughout that year the greenwas unplayable due to the waterrestrictions, which were not lifteduntil the end of that year. Allgames had to be played away onprivate greens. However a lot ofwork was carried out to improvethe surface of the green by re-seeding and re-turfing.Late in 1977 a meeting was heldto establish the Club which wasformed with 27 playing members, the first Chairman was Alf Wilson
a local Councillor. When the Club had establisheditself it applied for membership tothe various ruling bowls bodiesincluding WBA, the MBA and theNBA. The Club started playing inthe competitive leagues in 1978on a regular basis. When Rogerstone Power Stationclosed, the management offeredtheir clubhouse to RogerstoneBowls in recognition of theiremployees who were members ofthe bowling club. The clubhouse was dismantledand re-erected outside thebowling green. The area wasfenced off by Newport Councilwho considered that this wouldbe a shared facility for residentswithin the leisure complex. Laterafter negotiations with NewportCouncil, permission was given forthe existing clubhouse to be
erected close to the green as it isnow. This building came from theBethesda Chapel on Cefn Rd.Grants towards this came fromNewport Council and the NationalLottery Fund. The new complex was formallyopened by the deputy mayorCouncillor Peter McKim.Unfortunately, due to theeconomic situation the Club hashad to takeover all the runningcosts of the clubhouse and green. In the last three years we havealso accommodated the NewportHigh School Old Boys BowlsClub. And now we look to a newseason starting in April. Werecommend the sport to allpersons as a means of takinghealthy exercise and alsocompanionship and an improvedsocial life.
ROGERSTONE BOWLING CLUB
Any prospective members are welcome to visit the green orcontact the Captain Derek Carpenter on 07305 170169 or
Chairman John Walsh on 07847 731745 for more information.

Beechwood House, a Grade IIlisted building, was built in1877/78 by Habershon, Pite andFawkner, architects of Cardiff andNewport. It was built as theprivate residence for GeorgeFothergill, a tobaccomanufacturer and former Mayorof Newport.
The 30 acre park originally formedthe private grounds to the House. In 1900 Newport BoroughCouncil bought BeechwoodHouse and the grounds wereopened up as a public park, withrefreshments available in theHouse. During the First World War
the House was also used as aconvalescent home.
Beechwood House was occupiedby American Forces during WorldWar II and following this it had anumber of uses including a
hospital for the treatment oftuberculosis, an open air schooland a model railway club.
Beechwood Park is one ofNewport’s best loved openspaces.
Beechwood House The view from Beechwood Park is wonderful, from the top of the park you are able to experience the amazing panoramic views across Newport and the Channel. The peace and beauty of the park is calming and relaxing. We are fortunate to have such beauty in an urban area, enabling us to enjoy nature on our doorstep.
34 swdirectories.com March/April 2018
The land was presented toNewport Council by LordTredegar in 1891 and the parkwas opened in September1894. The Gorsedd Stone Circlewas erected in 1896, for theNational Eisteddfod, held inBelle Vue Park in 1897. Thebowling greens were opened in1904 and a Tea House added in1910. In 1924 the adjoininghouse and grounds of Belle VueHouse came into the council’sownership and the additional11 acres of land were absorbedinto the park, which nowextends to 26 acres. The Friends of NewportOrnamental Parks| was set up in2006 to work with Newport CityCouncil on the management ofBelle Vue and Beechwood parks. It won the prestigious Green Flag
Award for the 2008/9 season. We are fortunate to have thisimpressive park in Newport, aplace to enjoy nature’s beautyand appreciate a simple, peacefulwalk through a delightful park.

insert the missing

A Spring in the Step Across Bassaleg and RhiwderinAt long last, Newport is fi nally on the map for all the right reasons.
Th e regeneration of our city is continuing with lots of recent announcements detailing exciting new development plans creating more offi ce, leisure and retail space in the centre, the scrapping of the Severn Bridge tolls, jobs being created by new and existing companies and house builders continuing to construct houses across Newport.
Th ese factors are combining as is our resurgence on the football pitch. Individuals and families from outside the city are choosing to move here to enjoy the opportunities presented both old and new. Th ose already here are benefi ting from the rebirth of our city and choosing to stay here or moving within the city.
Th e impact is increasing demand for houses in Bassaleg and Rhiwderin. We have buyers eagerly waiting to view properties as soon as they become available and we are achieving a high percentage of full asking prices.
“ From the moment we met with John to the handing over of the keys, we received a fi rst-class service. Th ey were happy to work around our busy diaries and kept in regular contact. Th ank you all – very happy to recommend.”Deb Williamson, Newport

Under the leadership of MrsElizabeth Buttigeig who raisedmoney for the seventh year bybaking over 200 cup cakesevery month, her efforts wereonce again poured intoorganizing a fantasticChristmas luncheon party for150 guests. From north, south, east and west
of Gwent ex-service people from
twenty three branches/
organisations mustered at the
NSO business centre to be
welcomed into a very real
Christmas atmosphere of peace,
good will and joy by Mrs
Elizabeth Buttigeig, Mr John
Pullinger, the many helpers and
the Mayor Cllr David Fouweather
and Mayoress Mrs Paula
Fouweather.
Staff including Mr Jon Pullinger,
Mr Ian Bell, Ms Jan Jones and
Mr Scott Howell ushered guests
to tables beautifully set and
laden with crackers, hats and all
the Christmassy trimmings. Party
spirit was spontaneous, meeting
old friends and comrades,
settling into an afternoon of fun,
very good company and of being
embraced by caring people.
Following the welcome, in the
nature of the Nation’s Services,
past service people were
remembered with reverence and
deep respect by the sounding of
the Last Post by Blackwood’s
William Bader, followed by the
Silence and Reveille. The
Exhortation and Kohima was
delivered by Gwent Royal British
Legion Chairman, Stephen
Pennells of Ebbw Vale and
Beaufort.
So, into a right royal luncheon,
move over celebrity chefs,
turkey, all the trimmings and
abundance of wine, the pulling of
crackers and wearing of fun hats;
staff wearing fun tinsel hair
trimmings and all the time
dancing attendance on the
guests.
Entertainment was fantastic, the
NSO Choir was in the very best
of voice and in no time a great
sing-along happened. The 1940s
songs provided by The Cats
Pyjamas from Bristol brought
back memories; the tapping of
feet could be heard and more
than one guest could be seen
reminiscing a story, a place, a
person, a time, a group… and
was that a tear or two? The room
was filled with the sound of
Welsh voices singing, everyone
joining in when the Welsh
National Anthem was sung by
the Choir of the Dragons and
then to the delight of all a multi,
multi magnificent prize raffle was
drawn.
19.00 hours and time for
farewells and Christmas wishes
all around but generosity had not
ended, as guests departed they
were presented with gifts that
had been donated by Nagra of
Cwmbran.
As a guest, looking back over the
amazing festive gathering,
brought about by people who
care and are willing to band
together to make a special day
for others and to share their
good fortune of health and
happiness, one comes to the
conclusion that the spirit of
Christmas is very much alive and
well.
It must also be said that it is the
mark of successful management
and staff when all come together
to share joy and good will with
others and so to all at the
Newport Division of the National
Statistics Office from all who
came together on the 14th
December a huge THANK YOU.
May the year ahead be one of
good health and happiness and
may the Division continue in its
remarkable success and
compassion.

Winters in South Wales arerarely as severe as they werewhen I was growing up inShropshire during the 1970s. Iremember wading throughsnow drifts that reached mywaist, although admittedly Iwas only a schoolboy and wellbelow average height. Notmuch has changed in thatrespect, apart from the fact thatI am unlikely to be classed as ayoungster despite my fruitlessattempts to claim reducedfares on trains and buses. I am not the only resident ofNewport to have a dubiousreputation regardingtransportation or to know aboutthe cold. Perhaps the mostqualified person is PerceBlackborow, who was born in Pilltowards the end of the nineteenthcentury and is best known forhaving been the only stowawayon an Antarctic expedition. At the age of 18,Blackborow andan Americansailor calledWilliamBakewell foundthemselves inBuenos Aires, after their vessel,Golden Gate, waswrecked off thecoast of Montevideo.Seeking work, theyapplied to join SirErnest Shackleton'sship, Endurance, for itsvoyage south but whilstBakewell was hired,Perce's services weredeclined on account of hisyouth and inexperience. Thisdid not stop him, however. Hesneaked aboard and withBakewell's help, was concealedinside a locker. On the third day at sea, Percewas discovered and broughtbefore Shackleton. Having been
hidden in such a cramped space,Perce was unable to stand andhad to be seated during hismeeting with the explorer. Theleader was not best pleased tolearn of this unexpected visitorand is reputed to have told thestowaway that if the crewbecame hungry, he would be thefirst to be eaten. Nevertheless,Shackleton had little option but tooffer him a position on the ship, itbeing too late to turn back. Endurance struggled slowlythrough the pack ice of theWeddell Sea but in January 1915,it became wedged. During thistime, the crew played football and
hockey on the ice to keep upmorale and organised seal
hunting to ensure a steadysupply of food. The
ship remainedimmobilised
until
October of that year, when thepressure caused the hull to crackopen. Eventually, the order wasgiven for the vessel to beabandoned. Despite their efforts to marchacross the ice, conditions forcedthem to make camp. When openwater was finally sighted aftermany months, three lifeboats, which had been dragged from thestricken ship, were used to reachElephant Island and in April 1916,Perce had the distinction of beingthe first person ever to makelandfall there. By now, he hadsevere frostbite and several toeshad to be amputated while stillmarooned on the island. With no hope of rescue,Shackleton took five men andone of the lifeboats and headedfor a whaling station on SouthGeorgia some 800 miles away.Although Shackleton reachedsafety, it took over three monthsbefore the remaining crew, including Blackborow, could beevacuated from Elephant Island. After recovering from his ordeal inChile [oh, the irony!], Percereturned to Newport. A welcomeparty had amassed at the trainstation but being a modest man,he avoided the crowd by crossingthe tracks and making his wayout by a different route. He waslater awarded the Bronze PolarMedal but rarely spoke publiclyabout his experiences, whereasother members of the expedition
gave thousands of talks. Perce stayed in touch with
Bakewell and retained hislinks with the water by
becoming a boatmanat Alexandra Docks.Sadly, he died at hisMaesglas home in1949 while in hismid-fifties.
