Bats chosen because of the nature of the projects that will be done FLYING BLIND.
Bats are guided by a echo. FEEDBACK is IMPORTANT. Coming from participants, evaluators and peers.
Bats hunt in packs but mostly alone. That is how most projects will start.

Bat Cave should NOTbe the only process framework for CoE. It is one of the project framework for short term projects with a defined goal for a group or individual.

5. Bat Cave: Structure
Under Bat Cave, Center of Excellence has hills and each hill has a leader called -Hill Keeper
Hill Keeper is in charge of the hill for maximum of two quarters.
Hill keeper must either close the hill or chose to pass the baton to someone else.
Hill trading is allowed once.
Health of the hill is determined by number of caves in the hill. (What is a cave? next slide.)

Cave = CoE Project
Cave is owned by a BAT. Codenamed Bat Brain.
For a hill to remain standing, there should be at least one active cave. At least one active project under the CoE.
Hills are evaluated for health and demolish point every quarter.

Hills are evaluated by
Number of projects initiated
Success Ratio = (Successfully Completed/Initiated)
CoE points earned based on participation and completion.
Bonus CoE points based on how the project learning was applied to gain more business. Project may be successful or unsuccessful.

8. Bat Cave: Project Types
Three types of Projects:
Black Bat Projects Certification Project.
Green Bat Project Process Improvement/Metric Development.
Blue Bat Project Technology/Proof of Concept Project.
Projects under Bat Cave run from 7 14 weeks.
Other long terms projects can initiated by CoE, but will be outside the Bat Cave framework.

Black Bat Project
Certification Project
Primarily initiated by Hill Master for vendor partnership.
Request for certification may be initiated by individual for approval by the Hill Master.
Volunteers requested for these projects.
Responders earn CoE points upon selection.

Process
Maximum Duration: 35 working days = (1+6 weeks)
Deliverables
Certification from the vendor/certifying authority.
Weekly Blog from Week 1 describing the learning process and learning resources used.
Write up Tips and Tricks for the exam. (Should not violate ethical terms for the exam)
Resources
As per SPI Human Resources Training Policy unless explicitly stated.

Profile (Why? because not everybody is a bat.)
Person who has shown strong commitment for accomplishing goals or has track record of completing and maintaining certifications.
Person willing to work and study beyond regular hours.
Resourceful in obtaining guidance and study material independently and economically.

Process:
Progress tracked weekly via weekly blog and meeting with the Hill Master.
Exam date should be scheduled within the first two weeks.
Exam date should fall within six weeks designated for the project unless exception taken.

Bright Idea!
CoE can call for projects with specific goals.
Project should be scoped out that it can completed within 6-8 weeks with 1-2 people working part time.
Participation strictly voluntary. Cool Project = More People.
Hill Master evaluates project for feasibility effort, scope and benefits.

Equivalent to an underfunded start up
Use hardware/software already available to participants
Must look for open source/free/evaluation versions of the software.
Can request for software licenses already available in the organization.
LIMITATIONS Breed INNOVATION. Use Jugad.

The Project Owner - Bat Brain decides on the participants and number of participants.
Project owner can (and should) advertise his/her project. (Caution: More participants is not the goal).
IMPORTANT: Plan for attrition. Scope carefully.

Planning and Tracking
All caves evaluated for kill, every two weeks.
Result of kill evaluation are public record.
Measurable Goals:
Weekly Blogs briefing about the state of the project, from second week of the project start.
Working and demonstrable product/Draft process available every two weeks starting at end of fourth week.
Kill evaluation to look for end deliverable starting from Week 9 (Blue) and Week 7 (Black) of the project.
Green Bat Project: Must have signed up at least one project to use process/metric by end of Week 10.

Incentives:
Career Improvement
Recognition within the organization
CoE Points awarded, which will count toward annual/quarterly review.
Eligible for Annual/Bi Annual Award
CoE Points and track record can be used to request for a funded project.
