A bat is a mammal. Mammals are animals that nurse theiryoung, have hair, and are warm blooded.

There are 1,200 types of bats in the world. Most of thesebats are insect eating bats. More than 150 of these batsare fruit eating bats. A few bats hunt for larger prey suchas frogs, birds, or mice. Only three kinds of bats drinkblood. Such as the Vampire Bat.

Bats are nocturnal. Theyre active at night.

Bats have a sensitive nose, big ears and sharp eyesight.Their big ears even help some bats see with sound. Echo-location helps bats see at night. Bats make a high pitchedsound too loud for people to hear. When they are hunting, the sound waves hit an insect. The waves then bounceback to the bats ears as echoes. These echoes then tellthe bat the insects size and shape and where it is located.

A newborn bat is called a pup.

Bats live on every continent except Antarctica.

Humans are the biggest threat to bats today. But bat'snatural predators include owls, eagles, hawks, falcons, raccoons, wildcats and snakes.

Most bats live about 10 years.

    Facts about Bats:

    Bats are flying mammals.

While others can glide, bats are the only mammals capable of continued flight.

There are over 1000 different bat species.

Bats are nocturnal (active at night).

Bats see in the dark using a special skill called echolocation. Bats make noises and wait forthe sound waves to bounce back off objects (an echo), if it doesnt bounce back then they can

safely fly forward. They can tell the distance of various objects by how quickly the soundwaves bounce back to them.

Most bats feed on insects, while others eat fruit, fish or even blood!

There are 3 species of vampire bats which feed solely on blood.

Vampire bats have small and extremely sharp teeth which are capable of piercing an animalsskin (humans included) without them even noticing.

Vampire bats can carry rabies, making their bites potentially dangerous.

Some bats live by themselves while others live in caves with thousands of other bats.

Bats can live for over 20 years.

Pteropus bats (also known as flying foxes or fruit bats) are the largest in the world.

    Bat Taxonomy:

    Kingdom: Animalia

    Phylum: Chordata

    Class: Mammalia

    Order: Chiropera
