At low tide it becomes quite obvious that there is one continuous reef encircling the Bawah Reserve and there is plenty to observe within it so we recommend that you snorkel within this main reef. However, there will be opportunities for snorkelling excursions on the outer side of the reef where you are accompanied by a small boat so that you can safely have a different experience. This can even be combined with other people diving.

Swim straight from your suite at any time, but if the tide is low we recommend entering from the swim ladders on each of the two jetty pontoons. You can spend time snorkelling between the two pontoons or do an east or a west circuit along the reef edge. Your ultimate aim is to meet a turtle face to face. They are often immobile on the bottom and only move when you reveal yourself, so swim slowly.

Bawah Reserve has three types of terrain: the living coral, the dead coral with algal growth and sand. All three have different types of inhabitants.

If you can’t snorkel, Bawah is the perfect place to learn and our Activity Staff will be delighted to teach you. If don’t wish to snorkel our marine life is very visible from above, particularly along and at the end of each jetty or from a kayak or a paddleboard.

You will see many beautiful things but if you feel tempted to touch, don’t!

Bawah Reserve is edged by sublime snorkelling waters-a must do activity with an underwater world of tropical fish and coral waiting to be discovered. It’s best done when the sun is high and the reef and fish are at their most colourful but if you go when it is cloudy or overcast you will see different kinds of fish - yet another world.

Please avoid touching coral, as even small grazes can get infected, never walk on coral and be mindful of your fins. Wear appropriate clothing to protect you back, back of legs and shoulders.

Always ask for help and/or advice. We are happy to escort you to any of the numerous snorkelling sites.
