A people centric company, Batanidza is a woman owned black organisation that combines experience in community development, strategy development, skills

development, community media, and professional learning tours. Batanidza designs and develops interventions that are tailored for the needs of each client with the sole purpose of adding measurable value for clients.

Batanidza serves the corporate sector, the public sector and civil society organisa-tions. Through facilitation and experiential learning Batanidza helps companies, organisations, departments, task teams or communities hone in on operational chal-lenges and together find innovative solutions to achieve their goals.

Examples of the methodology are best demonstrated by three projects undertaken by the company in recent years. Batanidza facilitated an exchange program

between South African and Swedish social entrepreneurship programs. Pioneers of Change (PoC), a South African organisation, and the Social Entrepreneurship Forum (SEF), a Swedish group, were exploring social innovation of successful social ventures in both countries. Each organisation was represented by 6 delegates who spent two weeks in each country engaging with social enterprises to learn from them in order to transfer the knowledge to various stakeholders engaging within their various countries. The case studies from this learning tour have since been shared at various forums, including a Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) social innovation monthly dialogue session.

More recently Batanidza offered its services to facilitate social dialogue on Xenopho-bia hosted by GIBS (Gordon Institute for Business Science). By providing a designed dialogue program Batanidza is able to assist groups move from diverging views to find common ground in order to start working together on a mutually beneficial solu-tion.

At present the company has undertaken a research project for the Steve Biko Foun-dation providing Monitoring and Evaluation support for one of their programs.

This project will culminate with an impact assessment at the end of the evaluated program.

Batanidza works with clients to determine the most appropriate intervention for a specific problem in their company or organisation. A needs assessment is usually undertaken before providing diagnostic tools. This process usual takes the form of dialogue interviews with the team that will implement the changes recommended by the intervention.

Business networking – connecting companies with synergistic goals (where compa-nies have supplementary/complimentary objectives), Batanidza provides strate-

gic advice on how to engage with different stakeholders from business, government and communities. Through dynamic interaction with stakeholders Batanidza works to understand the needs, concerns, expectations & common relations with internal & external stakeholder.

The process that follows each stakeholder analysis for a client is one of aligning the stakeholder matrix to the strategic objectives of the client to outline how best to lever-age relations.

Monitoring and EvaluationMONITORING | EVALUATION IMPACT ASSESSMENT

Batanidza sets up a monitoring and evaluation framework appropriate for each program it engages with, all monitoring and evaluation frameworks will include

both qualitative and quantitative tools. Through ongoing interviews with internal and external stakeholders of the organisation Batanidza obtains qualitative data to anal-yse the progress of the program. Surveys, analysis of reports and other project docu-ments mostly inform the quantitative data which can be represented in graph or chart format.

When undertaking overall project impact assessment Batanidza recommends being involved from inception of a project to conduct baseline study in order to generate comparative data for the final assessment of the impact the program has had.

Batanidza specialises in community research for public sector input where govern-ment departments need public consultation on policies or large scale projects,

civil society projects and nforming corporate strategy or planning. Business clients use Batanidza research to create and manage profitable customer relationships, specifically township lifestyle research, which provides innovative and alternative in-formation on different markets. Community based participatory research is the corner stone of the research work that Batanidza undertakes.

Batanidza provides a learning framework to implement workplace strategies to de-velop and improve the skills of individuals in an organisation. In most cases these

will include tailored in house programs and where necessary recommendations of recognised learnership programs in the sector. Batanidza also leads explorations of avenues to fund skills development by means of the National Skills Fund and the levy-grant scheme.

Content specialisation: HIV/AIDS, food security, primary health, financial literacy, communication, youth development and to ensure social relavance for CSI interven-tions.

Batanidza helps clients keep their finger on the pulse of what pertinent partners and stakeholders in their field are thinking and doing. We conduct surveys on

hot topics in different industries to inform client strategies. Through iterative sessions teams are facilitated to find ways to remain relevant to existing markets, find entry strategies into new markets and develop growth strategies.

Clients gain input on innovative approaches to launch new businesses or business segments in existing companies, methods to improve services and service delivery.Using scenario-planning, groups can devise adaptive or mitigating strategies to shape and influence the future.

Learning ToursEDUCATIONAL LEARNING TOURS | BUSINESS TOURSGOVERNMENT EXPLORATION TOURS

Learning happens through hearing, seeing, tasting and experiencing. Batanidza offers learning tours for companies, government departments, organisations, stu-

dents and individuals.

Batanidza’s tour offering is informed by a learning tour it facilitated between South Africa and Sweden on social entrepreneurship. A program similar to that of the so-cial entrepreneurship learning journey is now being offered for educational learning tours. In partnership with learning institutions Batanidza provides tailor made school trips, study tours on a wide range of subjects and destinations to cater for the needs of participants’ curriculum and interests.

The business tours offer an excellent opportunity to grow professionally, network with potential business partners and discover new markets. At present, Batanidza

offer business tours in the SADC region, these are tailored as a holiday experience while learning and understanding the business landscape to the country.Government tours are intended for government departments or ministries that wish to investigate examples of best practices or countries grappling with similar challenges to inform new strategies to plan, develop and implement interventions particularly to service delivery.

Busi Dlamini has been an Associate with Reos Partners, a group of social innovators that works on complex social issues using systems thinking

methodology. She was involved in the Leadership and Innovation Network for Collaboration in the Children Sector (LINC) and Kago Ya Bana meaning “Building Together for Our Children”, both initiatives innovating on in the care of children in South Africa. More recently she has been working on Food Security and was part of team facilitating scenarios for the Refugees and Migration sector. Her introduction to systems work was with Generon Consulting on a multi-sectoral project around Orphaned and Vulnerable Children. Her previous position was Project Manager at ABC Ulwazi, a radio production, and training consultancy organisation. Her role involved overseeing all projects and productions, which included supporting the project team. Earlier experience included being a coordinator for HIV/ AIDS communication at ABC Ulwazi, the main functions of this position included supervising execution of all the HIV/ AIDS projects, and facilitating the creation of Listeners Associations, which were dialogue forums linked to community radio stations, in all 9 provinces. Prior to that, she held a position as a Volunteer Development Manager at AFS/ Interculture South Africa an international exchange student program. Her roleinvolved initiating volunteer structures in communities throughout South Africa, where she set up 20 chapters in 7 of the 9 provinces. Both her personal and professional paths have been around social transformation, with a specific focus on community engagement and that has seen her involvement in numerous social change networks.

She was part of the National Steering Committee of YSAWID – Young South African Women in Dialogue, a progeny of SAWID (South African Women in

Dialogue) an initiative conceived by the office of the spouse of the former President of the Republic of South Africa, initiated to create an independent forum where women from all sectors of society can gather to break barriers and to talk and listen to one another.

She is a founding member of The Gumboots Foundation; a non-profit organisation that provides South Africans living abroad the opportunity to be involved with their communities by way of contributing financial resources.

As member of Pioneers of Change, a learning community of young social change agents on five continents she led learning journeys including a social

entrepreneurship exchange between South Africa and Sweden in partnership with the Social Entrepreneurship Forum.

She is a graduate of numerous leadership programs including, the British Council Trust, the Difference Programme, the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) Catalyst programme, Common Purpose Navigator Programme and the Duke Leadership Programme. All programmes are designed for emerging leaders in various fields.

As a member of Civicus she presented a workshop at the World Assembly in Botswana on the 24th March 2004 under the topic “Fuelling Civic Participation”.
