BATEMANS BAY HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL’S REPORT PROGRESS REPORTS One of the signs of a healthy school is the willingness of families to participate in school events. A great deal of thought goes into the organisation and scheduling of any activity involving parents, mindful that not everyone has the flexibility in their working and private lives to attend meetings, special assemblies and performances. To assist parents, the school is now attempting to ensure regular events are actually held regularly, rather than varying the timing of such events each year. Parent/teacher evenings are one example and are now held at the end of Term 1 and the beginning of Term 3. Tuesdays are set aside to allow both parents and teachers to plan ahead. Although this may not suit everybody, limiting the commitment to a single day of the week is much more practical. With all things considered, the Semester 1 parent/teacher evening was well attended and the chance to speak with parents was most appreciated by all teachers. Members of the P&C were also grateful they could converse with other parents about any and all topics of interest. If you were unable to discuss your child’s progress for any reason, please contact the school to speak to the appropriate classes, teachers or year advisor. As much as I value parent/teacher evenings and would never sacrifice a wonderful opportunity for face-to-face interaction, the concept of twice yearly meetings is somewhat antiquated when you consider that teachers are able to provide feedback at any stage of the year, particularly at times that might be critical to a student’s progress. In other words, parents and teachers should communicate through other school channels whenever there is a need, regardless of the time of year. The progress reports issued at the parent/ teacher evening provide useful feedback, although perhaps more formative than summative. At the risk of sounding hypocritical, as a parent and teacher, I place considerable emphasis on the areas other than achievement in an interim report. Application, organisation, preparation and especially politeness and cooperation are essential characteristics of successful students. It is entirely possible for a student to register outstanding achievement in the junior school without the commensurate effort based on prerequisite knowledge and ability alone. However, a student lacking those other attributes will not succeed in the HSC, nor in life thereafter. I would like to recognise the students who were awarded primarily outstanding grades in the Term 1 progress reports: Year 7 - Chloe Baumeister, April Christie- Daly, Lennon Cotter, Tyrone Da Silva, Ellie Griffin, Zacary Jones, Sinead Roberstson, Lachlan Rowing, Emma Schmidt, Emma Stammers, Alexa Warwick, Adam Wing, Christina Young. PROGRESS REPORTS

One of the signs of a healthy school is the willingness of families to participate in school events.

The progress reports issued at the parent/teacher evening provide useful feedback, although perhaps more formative than summative. At the risk of sounding hypocritical, as a parent and teacher, I place considerable emphasis on the areas other than achievement in an interim report. Application, organisation, preparation and

especially politeness and cooperation are essential characteristics of successful students. It is entirely possible for a student to register outstanding achievement in the junior school without the commensurate effort based on prerequisite knowledge and ability alone. However, a student lacking those other attributes will not succeed in the HSC, nor in life thereafter.

I would like to recognise the students who were awarded primarily outstanding grades in the Term 1 progress reports:

If you have recently moved address, changed mobile number,

decided on a new emergency carer, or your child has a changed medical condition;

Please advise the school office

by phone or email so we can update our records.

School excursions are organised to enhance learning activities in the classroom. Even if your child has been to a particular place where the students are going, the focus of the excursion will be on specific areas.

Make attending school a priority. Don’t allow your children days off for birthdays, to

look after siblings, shopping days, etc. If a poor attitude to attendance is begun at school it becomes extremely difficult to change the habit in later years.

If your child will be absent for two or more days, it would be appreciated if you could

contact the school personally or by phone, to inform them that you are aware that your child is absent. This will avoid the need for a teacher to phone you to inform you of your child’s absence in case you were not aware that he/she was not at school. Please follow any verbal explanation with a note on the first day your child returns to school.

A HUGE thank you to Batehaven Quality Meats, Zorbas Waterfront Motel and Batehaven Bakehouse who donated sausages and bread towards a barbecue which fed some hungry competitors who were completing a fitness obstacle course. The Open boys and girls AFL teams travelled to Moruya to compete in the Giants cup and the Tracey Mitchell shield on Wednesday, 27 April. The teams players were:

Kristelle Westbrook Calum MacDonnell Stella Cross

Raine Dexter Blayne Abela Laura Alves

Dylan Art Braieta Barenaba Heidi Bell

Emilee Clout Jade Eaton Samantha Hanlon

Georgia Laverack Zane Rowley Ethan Thomas

Claire Turnbull Harry Aiken Connor Art

Zali Caple Tremayne Chatfield Chelsi-lee Dorn

Kym Freeman Jacomb Graham Bradley Jones

Jed Lasker Rhodes Lea Rhys MacDonnell

Aisha Roman Murray Stewart Claudia Alves

Jesse Coulter Topaz Eaton Rory McDonald

Denika Morgan Kelsey Pye Laura Thompson

Erin Warwick

The boys won their first game against Ulladulla. Rhodes kicked three goals and Dylan kicked two. We had a tough game against Narooma with Zane the only goal kicker.

A spirited and friendly game against Carroll College was next and unfortunately we lost by three. The last game was against Moruya, who shot to an early lead and while the boys came back we couldn’t reel in the deficit. Stand out players were Rory, Ethan, Rhys, Zane, Jade and Jacomb.

The girls lost their first two games and failed to kick a goal but there were signs of improvement in defence. Finally, against Moruya it came together. Strong tackling, winning the ball and pushing it forward led to the first goal by Hollee. Chelsi-Lee then kicked a goal and everyone got in the act. They defeated Moruya who had not been previously beaten. Claudia, Topaz, Laura and Georgia were stand out players on the day.

5 RYDA 2016

Just prior to the Term one break, our Year 11 students enjoyed a very informative day at the Moruya Racecourse. Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) is a one day program hosted by the local Rotary Clubs of Batemans Bay and Moruya. The theme of the day is “My Life, My Choices” and covers a broad range of topics including hazard perception, fatigue, stopping distances, vehicle safety and the opportunity to listen to and speak with a crash survivor.

RYDA is unique as it attempts to influence “attitudes and behaviours” of both passengers and drivers before they get their licenses. Sessions are delivered interactively together with practical demonstrations that emphasise the importance of responsible behaviour and the consequences of poor decision making on the road. A big thanks to all of the Rotary volunteers for coordinating and running the sessions. What a fun day and a fantastic opportunity for these young drivers.

Week 2

Each week this term there will be a maths challenge question posted on the maths staff room door and in the newsletter. Students can submit their solution to Mrs Cannings in the maths staffroom if they would like to participate. A solution is more than just the answer. It must show how the answer was found. Merits will be awarded for great solutions from each year group from 7-10. Trolley Park In a supermarket, there are two lines of tightly packed trolleys. The first line has ten trolleys and is 2.9m long. The second line has twenty trolleys and is 4.9m long. What is the length of one trolley, in metres?

Community Advertisements School Matters regularly includes community information and advertisements. The School does not endorse or accept responsibility for these activities. Attendance at or use of these services is at the discretion of the students.

Come along and see our first production for 2016. We have a cast of ten teenagers. Our play tells the story of two teenagers caught in the horrors of a war torn city where they use the telling of folktales each night to distract them from the reality of being lost and alone in a war zone. The mixture of hope, horror and humour make for a profound and deeply moving play. We invite students to contact The Bay Players if they are interested in workshops in the area of theatre production. It could be acting, directing, stage manager, sound and lighting, costumes, makeup etc.

Contact Lyn Sterling for more details 0416 181 003

Please come along to Batemans Bay Public School to have a yarn about a new online program-MGoals. This program allows students to choose some goals and put them onto the computer. Parents and teachers can also help them to achieve their goals. It is a program that can showcase local Aboriginal culture and history of the area. We can also share Aboriginal programs and events that are happening at school, for example, Sorry Day and NAIDOC Week. When: Wednesday, 4 MAY 2016 Where: Batemans Bay Public School—after school hours building. Time: 12.00pm
