Chapter 1 Importance of Bath Salts

Are we on the same wavelength when we speak of what bath salts are capable of doing for you?Consider the amounts of currency that individuals pay just to be able to visit and take a dip into ahot spring! Clearly, I see bath salts raising your spirits and stimulating your body physically, sothat you feel good doing whatever it is you are into at that particular period. They give you atranquilizing experience that you wish to have for the rest of your life. As traditionally believedand practically experienced, bath salts do really have special health and relaxing properties.

And what is the physical look of bath salts?

Well, not really powdery; rather, they have a crystal look and feel. After all, they are mostlyderived from actual minerals. Derived – how? That is simple: conventionally, minerals aresimply ground to make bath salts.

Oh! To help you out of any confusion considering the many minerals that there are in this hecticworld we live in, we need to pull out bath salt related minerals and distinguish them from themasses. The most common minerals that you can get bath salts from include:

Sodium – yes, we find it somewhere in our kitchen ingredients

Bicarbonate – oh yes; that too lands in our kitchen in one form or other

Calcium – that one that the orthopedic doctor keeps recommending

Magnesium – also shows up in our daily foods

Sulfate – well, does not stroll everywhere but is no stranger either

So, there! You now have an idea the kind of stuff we are referring to when we talk of bath salts. To bring you even nearer home, let us give you the various names that actual bath salts pass by.They include:

i) Sodium chloride

Oops! You thought that was strictly table salt? Oh no – it is not just meant for your palate. It hasmore to offer in relaxation.

ii) Sodium bicarbonate

Oh no! I say, oh yes. This is not just meant to serve as a baking agent; it is more useful than that, contributing to your body fitness.

iii) Magnesium sulfate

In day to day language, you will see it as Epsom salts – those ones they mention when you need acure for muscle aches and discomforts like those.

iv) Sodium hexametaphosphate

Page 9: Bath Salts the Ultimate Beginner-Asin_B00T8IC1FC-Type_EBOK-V_0

That one you may see on those products that relax the texture of your garments; so the name cannotbe that strange to you, really, especially when we tell you that its common name is Calgon.

v) Sodium citrate – the one they use to emulsify oils and sometimes to regulate acidlevels in drinks

vi) Borax

vii) Sodium sesquicarbonate

So, generally speaking, why are bath salts so popular?

A number of reasons fit well – like:

They make you enjoy your bath in a special way

They enhance your cleaning – yes, really

They make you enjoy the feel-good sense that encompasses you within a natural hotspring

They serve as good carriers of fragrances and a myriad other cosmetic agents.

Where do I get miners to provide these mineral like substances that are bath salts?

No; you do not need miners, because when you are talking relaxation and that feel-good sense, you do not deal with crude stuff; which is what miners extract. All you do is confidently enter abeauty outlet; a supermarket; a chemist; or such other commercial place, and you will find wellpackaged bath salts.

Alternatively, and that is what we are preparing you for today, you simply make your own bathsalts. You get to use only the ingredients you like, you get the scents you love – call it freedomand relaxation in one package.

By the way, when did bath salts begin to fascinate people?

Great question because you and I are not the first to have the idea there is something special aboutbath salts.

Now, say Hippocrates – ok. Say medicine – alright. This man of Greek descent, who is theacclaimed Father of conventional Medicine as we know it today, knew there was something tobath salts than their glossy look or natural nice smell. So he encouraged his colleagues in theprofession to take advantage of the salts of the seas to cure their patients of various ailments.

When exactly is this that they were using bath salts?

Just realize that Hippocrates lived between the years of 460BC and 370BC. That tells youclearly that the importance of bath salts was already known prior to Hippocrates’ practice inmedicine. In fact, there is documentation.

About 2700 BCE, someone in China published some material on the usefulness of such salts andeven gave steps that you could use to extract the salts. So the Greeks took up the challenge fromHippocrates and the salts continued to gain popularity. And before we can say rightly that the rest

Page 10: Bath Salts the Ultimate Beginner-Asin_B00T8IC1FC-Type_EBOK-V_0

is history, you see some publication by an English author who also happened to be a physician –The Uses of Sea Water.

So, clearly, bath salts were there in ancient days; they have been around in all the centuries goneby; and are still here for us to enjoy. Why not then learn how to have them conveniently and enjoythem!

In the meantime, has someone whispered these very fascinating facts about bath salts?

a That if you put a lot of bath salts in your bath water the density of the water goessignificantly up and you actually experience some buoyancy? Wow! Makes you feel buoyantlike a bouncing ball, only you are in water and getting soothed.

b That it is likely bath salts could cure arthritis?

Sounds like these are salts whose effect you do not want to miss, whether you can afford spavisits or not.

Chapter 2

The Long List of Bath Salt Benefits

Did you for a moment imagine we were through with all the good that bath salts provide? Surelyno – chapter one was just a mention. It is only after you get to appreciate clearly the potential ofbath salts and how much they can positively impact your life that you will hunger for the skills toenable you make some yourself.

So let us consider some of the benefits that will inevitably bring a smile to your face:

Suppose you were to learn that bath salts enhance your beauty, on a very serious note? You will definitely love that. And yes, they do.

And suppose you were to learn that bath salts make you smell extra wonderful? Surely, that is another thing you will love. And yes, they do.

And supposing you were to learn that bath salts effectively raise your very mood andmake you feel great about life? Well, is that not another wonderful thing! And yes, theydo.

Good thing is: there is plenty more you will learn about bath salts that will make you wish toalways have some in the house.

Let us learn the details of how bath salts improve your life:

a) Bath salts exfoliate whatever dead cells there are within your expansive skin, and kind ofrejuvenate the skin. Sounds refreshing! What does that do to your skin then? It actually doessomething enviable – what you always long for. And that is your skin looks smooth; soft;supple; and generally much younger!

b) Bath salts heal your body. And truly, whatever can heal your body without involvingswallowing a pellet or taking a jab is welcome; especially when it involves natural products. And you just cannot be content with the term healing because it is really broad. So here webreak it down in relation to bath salts:

1. If you have psoriasis, bath salts help you out

2. In case you have eczema, bath salts do you good

3. If you have athlete’s foot, bath salts will come in handy too. In fact, theyreverse lots of serious skin conditions, thus helping you regain any selfconfidence you may have lost as a result of your coarse and unsightly skin.

How about other discomforts of the skin or muscles?

4. In case you wronged a mosquito or other insect, for real or otherwise, andyou got paid with a bite, bath salts will bail you out of your irritation.

5. If you have other types of skin rashes, bath salts cool down the irritation too.

6. In case you have calluses on your beloved feet, bath salts will be your

Page 13: Bath Salts the Ultimate Beginner-Asin_B00T8IC1FC-Type_EBOK-V_0

redeemer

7. And do not miss out on this: You do not have to pop a tablet for your muscletension. Bath salts do relax your muscles until you forget they ever ached.

Why do you think bath salts are that great for your skin? Ah – let us say we put guesswork asideand talk facts. For one, the working process of bath salts is very effective. Aha – and how is that?Well, once you immerse yourself in the water in which you have added bath salts, the mineralsthat are obviously active, penetrate the pores of your skin; and that is at molecular level – seriousbusiness here. And what is the impact? The impact is effectively cleansing your skin of anyimpurities, and essentially purifying it.

Wow! You can almost feel your skin breathing fresh. And of course, the look of your skin tells itall. It looks well toned; with a nice texture; and it generally radiates.

How do individual minerals work?

Well, just curious: Do you know how the minerals in the bath salts work singularly? Here:

Magnesium

This is the mineral that fights your fatigue and stress. And you can imagine how much you needthat after a long day of highs and lows; both physical and mental.

Bromide

We had not mentioned this one before by name, but yes – it is one of those very active mineralsthat make bath salts worth having. When you hear that bath salts are soothing and relaxing to yourmuscles, bromide is it.

Sodium

Sodium does some balancing of your lymphatic fluids. Obviously you can visualize something inthe bracket of osmosis and diffusion. Whatever that it is that sodium enables at when you aretaking your bath, it results to optimal balancing of those fluids.

Potassium

This mineral is responsible for keeping the moisture levels within your skin well leveled.

Calcium

This one does not allow your body to retain any more water than is necessary – keeps that arenawell under check.

Going by that long list of benefits, surely, who would question the importance of having bath saltsin your house or wherever it is that you prefer to go for relaxation? Clearly, they are great foryour mental and also physical health.

Page 14: Bath Salts the Ultimate Beginner-Asin_B00T8IC1FC-Type_EBOK-V_0

Chapter 3 Believe It – You definitely Can Make Customized Bath Salts – and Fast!

You need not fret about making your own bath salts even if you have hydrophobia. No-oneintends to make you a sea farer. Under no circumstances are you going to be required to dip intothe deep or shallow seas for this purpose, though the seas are surely rich in some of those greatminerals.

So here we teach you how to make different types of bath salts from the comfort of your home:

1) Sea Salt based Bath Salts

Assemble your ingredients which are:

i) Sea salt = One cup

ii) Epsom salt = One cup

iii) Essential oil = One teaspoon

Which essential oils here now? Well, it all depends on what kind of scent you wish to have –mild, strong, or just some mixed kind of fragrance. In fact, some are kind of floral; otherssomewhat woody; while others are fruity.

Some mild floral scents you can choose from include rose; lilac; and lavender. These ones giveyou an aura of ease, leaving you feeling stress free.

Some of the strong scents include eucalyptus; citrus; and also peppermint. Their effect is actuallyto raise your mood by invigorating your senses.

And when you decide to mix scents, what you do is put a bit of each of the fragrances you areusing. That way you end up with a lovely and unique scent – a product of your own creativeness.

iv) Dried leaves = Optional

These dried leaves include those of thyme; peppermint; and also rosemary.

v) Flower buds = Optional

Theses ones include petals of lavender and the rose.

vi) Color = Optional

When you choose to add color to your bath salts, it is appropriate that you choose that whichtallies with your choice of fragrance. For example, while color purple matches the lavenderscent, green matches eucalyptus.

How to go about mixing the salts:

Mix your salts in a container, preferably a bowl.

Then add your ground leaves and flower buds. But if your flower buds or leaves are not

Page 16: Bath Salts the Ultimate Beginner-Asin_B00T8IC1FC-Type_EBOK-V_0

ground, you could use a food processor to grind them.

Next add your chosen essential oil slowly by slowly as you mix them with the saltmixture. Ensure that your essential oil reaches every part of the salt mixture.

Finally, add your chosen color and mix it well too so that your bath salts are uniformlycolored.

Believe it or not – you are done. Storage is the other important step to consider as you cannotafford to lose any fragrance from your bath salts. Whatever container you decide to store yoursalts in, ensure you seal it securely tight.

Wow! Food is ready – how do I eat it? Well, use a fork and spoon! Just an analogy anyway…The relevant question is: How do you use your bath salts? It is actually good to know lest youcome across as ignorant or obnoxious.

The civilized way to do it is measure it in teaspoons and put a few of them right into your waterthat needs to be warm. Give your salts a moment to dissolve. And thereafter you can dip right inand enjoy your bath salts.

2) Baking soda based bath salts

Ingredients:

i) Epsom salt = One cup

ii) Baking Soda = One cup

iii) Liquid glycerin = Two tablespoons

iv) Essential oils

v) Dry herbs = Optional

The Mixing Process

Mix the Epsom salt plus the baking soda in a container

In the salt mix, put your glycerin and mix well

Add the amount of essential oil that you choose according to the strength of scent you want

Follow up with your dry herbs if you want some and mix well

Storage

As all other bath salts, store this one tightly in a container and only open to get a few teaspoonsfor your bath.

3) Clay and Borax Bath Salts

Ingredients:

i) Epson salts = Two cups

ii) Borax = Two cups

Page 17: Bath Salts the Ultimate Beginner-Asin_B00T8IC1FC-Type_EBOK-V_0

iii) Kaolin clay powder = ½ cup

iv) Essential oils

The Mixing Process

Combine the Epson salts, the Borax and the Kaolin clay powder in a container and mixproperly. Your latter two contribute to softening your skin and relaxing those tightmuscles; and other health benefits.

Add your oils into the salt mixture, slowly by slowly, all the time mixing well so that thewhole mixture is evenly oiled

The storage and usage are just like for all the other bath salts.

Chapter 4 What exactly are Bath Bombs?

Does the association with bomb set you all alert? If so, it is just as well because you are about tolearn that the term sometimes comes with things you do not want to live without: stress kick-outand relaxation. Bath bombs do not bomb you but rather bombard you with natural elements thatare cleansing, nice smelling and therapeutic.

But to have a clear image, let us say, bath bombs are soft balls – well solid, though – that areimmersed in bath water for the purpose of adding into the water nice scents; cleansing agents;healing and soothing oils; and other such elements, including color. Of course, you need toappreciate that they also produce bubbles as they get soaked by the water.

So are you to use bath bombs because you are dirty or ill?

No – that is not the case. In fact, you may even want to give someone bath bombs for a gift – theywould be welcome. But when you want them for yourself, it is usually because they have someingredients, like the sea salt, which penetrate into your body while you are enjoying your nicewarm bath; removing impurities that are usually stuck within the pores of your skin.

Then if your body is feeling tense and heavy, some of the ingredients like mint energize youinstantly, and the feeling of lethargy disappears. If you are really feeling tired and tense in a bigway, you may wish to add some lavender essence as you are making your bath bombs.

And the reason we are attributing the aspect of therapy to bath bombs, for one, is that when youare very tired and tense you tend to feel ill. In fact, often you are not very productive when youare in that state. In addition, there is another angle to direct healing like in the case where youhave a rough skin that makes you uncomfortable. In case you decide to include sweet almond oilin your bath bombs in the process of making them, the oil has the effect of moisturizing your skin, and that, without any side effects as it sometimes happens with synthetic applications. You caneven cap up that by adding some avocado oil or even wheat germ oil into your bath bombs.

So you relax and you heal, all in a natural way. Yet that is not all. If you have been pleading withyour kids to go take a bath, you can easily solve that problem by giving them bath bombs todissolve in their bath water. And where does the help lie, you may wonder? Here: not only willthey experience the pampering that you also enjoy, but they will be fascinated by the bubbling inthe water, and then bathing becomes some form of entertainment for them. And do not underratethe attraction of color to kids.

What is the real make-up of bath bombs?

Bath bombs are more or less like bath salts in composition, only that the bombs – well, bathbombs – are shapely and not powdery. Otherwise, expect to use:

Sodium bicarbonate

This is what you know as baking soda in the food arena

Page 20: Bath Salts the Ultimate Beginner-Asin_B00T8IC1FC-Type_EBOK-V_0

Citric acid

This is the ingredient that seeks out the sodium bicarbonate to perform some chemical activitythat results in bubbles. And just for information, those bubbles that are real fun to have in yourbath are nothing much, really – just some carbon dioxide!

Corn starch

This is nothing more than a filler – just to get the two active ingredients of citric acid and sodiumbicarbonate holding together as you make the bath bombs.

Magnesium sulfate

This one may sound pretty scientific but it only means Epson salts. But these salts contributemassively to relieving muscle aches and tension.

Of course, just like in the case of bath salts, you have the leeway to add dried herbs; dried flowerpetals; and even coloring. And just to make the bath bombs even more appealing to the eye, you couldadd some glitter.

How long does it take these ball-like things to dissolve?

Well, by the time you complete exclaiming what a wonderful feel and a few more superlatives, yourbath bomb will have dissolved. We are talking of around two minutes since getting into contact withthe water.

How do you know your bath bombs are doing what they are meant to do?

Of course you know the issue of bubbles – those ones you will see with your naked eyes. But thenthere is the issue of sound: you will hear crackling and fizzing as each of your bath bombsdisintegrates. That is also the time when the unique properties of the bomb begin to be clear – thefragrance and the color mainly.

At what point in the bathing process do I add in the bath bomb?

Good question this one is. You do not want a situation where you fail to experience the full effectof your bath bombs. So, here is how it goes:

Fill in your bath tub with water that is warm – obviously not to the brim otherwise it willspill over when you jump in. You also understand how nice warm water feels on the body; sousing it is just complementing the impact of the bath bomb.

Pick your bath bomb from wherever dry place you have secured it. Grip it carefully as youdip into your bath tub and make yourself comfortable.

At this point, you are ready to begin your blissful experience; so hold your bath bomb highabove your bathing water.

Then one – two – three – drop!

The bubbling and fizzing begins. And the uplifting aura of beautiful scents engulfs you, automatically putting you in a relaxing mode.

Page 21: Bath Salts the Ultimate Beginner-Asin_B00T8IC1FC-Type_EBOK-V_0

Bath Bomb Maker: Beware!

Is there any way something can go haywire in the whole process? Well, not really. At least not ina way that can cause you significant harm. The reason for this alert is that you want everything togo as you intend so that you end up enjoying bath bombs at a relatively low cost.

Times to keep watch is when you go out to buy fragrance and those other products that are meantto produce nice scents and even color. You want scent releasing products that are body friendly;no less. So, beware some store does not sell you fragrant oils and other products that are meantfor scented candles. You know some unscrupulous charlatans can do precisely that withoutbatting an eyelid.

In fact, the best outlets to buy your bath bomb stuff from are those that deal in foods. If you are farfrom those ones, you can check out some craft stores too. You do not want to risk buying thewrong brand of products and then in place of nice scents you end up getting odors; and in place ofskin softening ingredients you end up getting irritants – no. You just have to get the rightingredients and make yourself therapeutic bath bombs right in your house.

Quick Question:

Suppose there is no citric acid available in the stores?

Well, that is not a big deal. You can make bath bombs that are just as good using Cream of Tartar. Sothis elusive ingredient that is citric acid need not bother you much. By the way, what is this creamtartar all about or where does it come from? Ah – you will love this. You know how nice winesmells? Good! This product – Cream of Tartar – is a by-product of the wine making process. And thisis the place I hear, cheers! Why seek anything else?

Page 22: Bath Salts the Ultimate Beginner-Asin_B00T8IC1FC-Type_EBOK-V_0
Page 23: Bath Salts the Ultimate Beginner-Asin_B00T8IC1FC-Type_EBOK-V_0

Chapter 5 Let Us Make Bath Bombs In Half An Hour – Or Less!

Ingredients

Mineral salts = 4 ounces

You can also choose to use Dead Sea Salts instead.

Baking Soda = 8 ounces

Citric acid = 4 ounces

Corn starch = 4 ounces

Essential oil = 2 teaspoons

Normal fragrance oil will do too

Vegetable oil = 2½ teaspoons

Water = 0.75 tablespoons

Food coloring = a few drops, say 2 or 3.

Have a mixing bowl ready

Have your molds ready

The reason you want these bath bombs is that you want some fun too. So if you have a chance toget some fancy designed bath bomb molds, why not? You can find some that are 3-D in a circularkind of fashion; others that are 3-D Hearts; you even get 3-D Stars; and just some regular bowlshaped molds.

And something that will make you relax is that you do not have to spend money buying molds. You can look for substitutes around the house – anything that help you bring out some shapedlump.

You can even decide to combine different colors. For instance, if you use 1 drop of red coloringand 2 drops of yellow coloring you will produce some peach color that is somewhat light. Something that you need to note is that whereas your coloring might appear darkish in youremulsion, it will come out comparatively light as the fizzing takes place in the water. Youtherefore need not worry about your bath bomb leaving colored rings in your bath tub.[

How to go about making the bath bomb:

i) Get a bowl and put all your dry ingredients in it.

Whereas it is not a strict rule, using a glass bowl is the best option as glass does not trigger anychemical reactions. Also it has nothing that can peel off and mix in your bath bomb ingredients.

ii) Mix the liquid ingredients together and preferably whisk them up so they are almost evenly

Page 24: Bath Salts the Ultimate Beginner-Asin_B00T8IC1FC-Type_EBOK-V_0

distributed.

iii) Now pour the liquid into the dry mix in the bowl gradually as you continuemixing. Whisk everything into a smooth mix. In case you observe some foaming, halt addingthe liquid and try and even out the ingredients by consciously getting the foaming part to mixwith the other content that is not reacting. As from there, the best thing is to continue addingyour liquid into the mixture each teaspoonful in its own time.

iv) The look of your stuff after you have completed mixing your ingredients properly shouldbe some sandy looking damp lump. And you should be able to mold it nicely in a way that itholds together well.

v) Now set your molds ready on a flat surface and put in your moist lumps. Take any twofilled up molds and attach them together such that the bath bomb contents are closed inside.

vi) After the minutes you wish – no specific time, really – remove your shaped lumps and laythem on some open space to dry. In fact, it is fine to remove your bath bomb lumps soon afteryou have fixed your molds properly in place. The reason is that all you are interested in atthis juncture is to make lumps of a particular size in your preferred design.

vii) Once you have your bath bomb mix dry, it is important that you store them in anairtight place, preferably some bag. The reason for this is that you want them safe frommoisture of any sort including humidity for obvious reasons – in contact with moisture, theyare right away activated.

Note:

Whenever you do not include a preservative in your ingredients for your bath bombs, ensure thatyou use those bath bombs within a period of six months.

Just try and do a recap now:

You had your ingredients with you. You just laid them out on a flat surface. You began by mixingthe dry things together and the liquid ones separately. Then you mixed the two. Thereafter youscooped the mixture and filled up your molds, closing in your wet content to form nice shapes. You then removed the shaped lumps and laid them out to dry.

That process has surely taken less than 30minutes – hurray!

1.

Ingredients

Baking Soda = 2 ⅔ tablespoons

Citric acid = 1 ⅓ tablespoons

Cornstarch = 2 tablespoons

Food coloring = 2 drops

It is preferred that you have two varieties just for beauty

Page 25: Bath Salts the Ultimate Beginner-Asin_B00T8IC1FC-Type_EBOK-V_0

Epsom salts = 2 teaspoons

Vegetable oil = 1 teaspoon

Fragrance = 15 drops

Water = 1 teaspoon

Other items you need to prepare for use include:

Measuring spoons

Medicine dropper

Mixing utensils like spoons or even forks

2 bowls

An ice cube tray

A muffin tray only as a substitute to the ice cube tray

How to go about making your bath bombs fast:

i) Look at your bowls and identify one where you are going to mix your corn starch;your citric acid; baking soda; and also your Epsom salts. And remember this is the placeto use your measuring spoons. It is important that you use a clean spoon for everyseparate ingredient.

ii) Good! Now survey your three remaining bowls and pick one where you mix yourwater; vegetable oil; and food coloring; and fragrance, if you have opted for this scentreleasing ingredient. Of course you measure these liquids using your medicine dropper.

Hey! Remember every ingredient here is distinct with its own chemical properties, andyou do not want to initiate unnecessary reactions inadvertently. So, it is important thatyou wash your medicine dropper after you measure every ingredient. You want a cleandropper as you measure every fresh ingredient.

iii) Now the real bath bomb building job begins! You have got your two bowls withtheir different ingredients well mixed up. It is time to bring them together. Pick amedicine dropper and begin to suck up liquid from the bowl of liquids, and dropping itinto the other content bowl.

Do you observe fizzing taking place? Oh yes – but that should not continue because it ismeant for your bath tub; so this fizzing is premature. So how do you stop it? Easy – picka clean spoon, and using its back, press it against the content area that is fizzing.

Keep adding the liquid into the other bowl and avoiding the fizzing, until you are donewith all the liquid.

iv) Mix your stuff such that all the ingredients are evenly distributed. Once you aresatisfied with your mixing, it is time to do the serving. Well, not for immediateconsumption, really, or use, but to lay it out to dry.

Page 26: Bath Salts the Ultimate Beginner-Asin_B00T8IC1FC-Type_EBOK-V_0

v) So here we go: Pick out your tray.

Using your medicine dropper, dish a drop of vegetable oil to each cup of your tray. The usewhatever method you want to use to spread that oil all round. You can even use your bare hands.Anyway the reason is to make your tray cups slippery in a way your mixed stuff will not stickonto the walls.

vi) Now fill your tray cups with the mixture

vii) You have now reached the stage where you want your bath bombs dried. Youhave two options:

1. In the first option, you just leave them in the ice cube tray that you have put them. Inthat case, you will not be in a hurry to see them dry; so leave them through the night.

2. In the second option, you need to pre-heat your oven to around 170°F. Then put yourmuffin tray with your bath bombs right into the oven. Ensure you switch off youroven. Now wait and see: your bath bombs will dry within minutes.

The long and short of it is that you have all reason and all means to enjoy bath salts and bathbombs because the materials needed to make them are easily available, and most importantly, thetime you need to make them is really short – less the time you need to make an average meal!
