Bathroom Specification

Workbook

You will be making hundreds of small decisions and

choices during the process of your renovation or new

build. Many of these will be around finishing products

and the small details associated with them.

It can quickly get overwhelming.

That’s where a simple workbook, such as this one, can

take away the panic of a rushed, last minute decision.

Working your way through a structured process well

ahead of time will allow you to make rational and well

considered choices.

Your builder will be able to provide you with a

comprehensive list of areas that need specification—

including everything from the colour of the concrete in

the driveway to door handle selection and tile layouts.

In a renovation many of these decisions will al-

ready be made as you will be working to match the

existing building.

We’ve chosen a bathroom workbook to get you

started because the bathroom is the most detailed

room in the house. For this reason, it may even be

worth doing a separate workbook for each bath-

room.

It’s also a good idea to collect pictures or take

photos of the items you’ve selected and collate

them at the back. This is a good way to get a visual

on how it could all come together and is a better

way to remember what you’ve selected.

You make better decisions when your happy—so

have fun planning your future bathroom!

The first thing to do is to create a floor plan layout of your bathroom. This will show you the space

you are working with and how the items you select can work together for both functionality and

aesthetics.

You may also use this grid to draw each wall layout. This is a clear way of communicating with your

Project Manager the details you’d like in the bathroom. Consider things like where the tiles go—

half wall or full wall? Where exactly would you like them to stop? Do you want alcoves built beside

the bath or inside the shower? Where exactly? What about the mosaic tile feature—where should

that start and finish?

You’ll think of other things as you start drawing and positioning the items you’ve selected.

To get started:

1. Mark out the internal wall measurements of your bathroom.

2. Mark on the window and note the dimensions—length and height.

3. Mark where the door is and the swing line as you open it.

4. Position your items. Think about what people see as they walk past the bathroom.

5. Remember to mark in wall lighting around the mirror.
