Changing or updating your bathroom doesn’t have to be an expensive or difficult process Bathroom Layout• Consider what you want to fit and how best to fit it. Bear in mind that any major layout changes may require

extra plumbing.• Start by drawing a floor plan of the room to scale, in pencil, on graph paper. Mark out waste outlets,

plumbing and fixed items such as doors, windows and radiators. Then on another piece of paper - to the same scale - draw the items you want to add (remembering to leave enough standing room).

Hints & Tips• Simple changes such as re-hanging a door so that it opens differently

can create space. • Minimise condensation damage by fitting an extractor fan to a window

or outside wall. • Advise your local Building Control Officer of any changed or additional drain work. Also, let your local Water

Company know about any water supply changes, such as pipe re-routing, and make sure that all changes conform to current Water By-Laws.

Identifying Your Water SystemThere are 3 common hot water systems in the UK: Gravity Fed, Combi Boiler or High Pressure Unvented systems. Use the chart below to identify the system you have and which type of shower you can choose from*.

Electric ShowersQuick and easy to install. Requires cold water supply only. Heats cold water instantly through an integral heater within the shower to provide a hot water supply at all times. The greater the wattage, the higher the flow rate. For example, a Wickes 9.5kW electric shower provides up to 40% more flow than a Wickes 7.5kW shower.

Thermostatic Mixer ShowersBlends hot and cold water supply to create a constant temperature, even when other taps are in use. Automatic safety shut off in the event of hot or cold water failure. Thermostatic device will accurately maintain the temperature to prevent scalding.

Shower PumpsInstalling a shower pump can improve the performance of a shower. Wickes pumps are not only fit for domestic use but the brass pumps are suitable for light commercial and industrial applications. They are designed to be quiet in operation. Positive and universal heads are available, positive heads can only be used when highest point of pipework is at least 250mm below cold water tank, please refer to the diagram for information on where positive and universal heads can be used. TapsWater PressureEach tap listed has its minimum pressure requirements for adequate performance (measured in bars). Typically 0.1-0.9 bar is low pressure and 1 bar and above is high pressure. The amount of pressure generated depends on the type of water system installed.

As a general guide an Indirect water system has a cold water tank (normally in a loft or airing cupboard) and a hot water storage tank (usually stored in an airing cupboard). This is a low pressure system.

A Direct water system (high pressure) takes water supplies directly from the water mains and usually uses a combination boiler to generate hot water. Direct water systems can be used in medium & higher pressure water supply areas.

Before purchasing a tap or arranging an installation, please check which system you have. If you are in any doubt, obtain advice from a suitable qualified tradesperson.
