“Success is a Choice”

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome to the 2015-16 school year! For those of you who recently

moved to the Battlefield area, we hope you are getting settled and

learning about the community. If you are a returning Battlefield

family, we hope you had a relaxing summer.

On Thursday, August 20, 704 freshmen and upper classmen were at

Battlefield for the New Student Orientation. With the help of 99

student leaders and teachers, our new Bobcats were welcomed by

SCA President Steven Tian. Students were introduced to the

Administrative and Counseling Teams. They took a tour of the

building, participated in a “What Not to Wear” fashion show, heard

about clubs and activities they could join, and had the opportunity to

meet other students. Students were told where to find opening day

information about their schedules and reminded to locate their bus

numbers, even if they did not plan to ride the bus in the opening

weeks of school. We appreciate all of the positive feedback and the

support from our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), our Athletic

Boosters, and Chick-Fil-A of Gainesville.

As you know, school starts this year on Monday, August 31. The first

period class will start at 7:20 a.m. If you are bringing your student to

school on Monday, please anticipate long waits to enter the parking

lot. We know from previous years the volume of traffic will be huge

and will lessen as we move through September. There will easily be

over 1,200 cars entering the parking lot in a 30 minute period. To ensure your child is not late on the first day, I

would encourage you to have him/her ride the bus. If that is not an option, be sure you are approaching

Graduation Drive no later than 6:40 a.m.

Back to School Night is scheduled for Thursday, September 3, with a start time of 6:15 p.m. Please car pool as

parking is limited. If possible, bring a copy of your student’s schedule showing the room numbers so you do

not have to wait in line for assistance. We will make schedules available for parents who do not bring them.

Large maps will be posted in the hallways and administrators, counselors, and Air Force JROTC cadets will be

on hand to provide direction. Please come out and meet your student’s teachers!

Please note the following events that will be taking place over the next few weeks. These dates are also posted

on the website for your convenience.

I am looking forward to another successful year!

Sincerely,

Amy S. Ethridge-Conti

Back to School Night

Thursday, September 3, 2015

6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

*Please car pool as parking space is limited.

Back to School Night will start at 6:30 p.m. Parents should report to their student’s 1st period class. Staff

members will be stationed in the cafeteria/commons and the main lobby to assist you with locating your child’s

1st period class, and student schedules will be distributed during 1st period. To avoid waiting in line, you are

encouraged to bring your student’s schedule with you.

The School Store will be open in the cafeteria/commons, and Athletic Passes will be on sale. The PTO will

have a table for parents who are interested in signing up, and a representative from Giant will be here to help

you link your Giant card with the school name for the Rewards Program. Teri Carlton, Cafeteria Manager, will

be in the cafeteria/commons to answer any questions you have and to help you place funds on your student’s

account.

For parents who need to sign up for Parent Portal, assistance will be available in the school library.

We hope to see you at this year’s Back to School Night.

News from the Counseling Center

I hope everyone has enjoyed a fun and restful summer! There have been some staff changes in the Counseling

Center for the 2015-2016 school year. School counselor Tiffany Kaufman has left to pursue other opportunities

and school counselor Scott Merkel has joined our staff. Mr. Merkel is very excited to join our team at

Battlefield!

September brings an opportunity for a “fresh start” for everyone and I encourage students and parents to

approach the new school year with optimism. My advice to students is to get off to a strong start and continue

building momentum all year, rather than having to play “catch up” later on.

Parent/Guardian involvement is a key component to student success and there are many ways you can support

your student. If you have questions about your student’s progress in school, please consider:

checking Parent Portal to get up-to-date grade and attendance information online

checking School Fusion to find out what’s going on in your student’s classes

contacting your student’s teachers by e-mail or phone

speaking with your student’s school counselor

contacting your student’s teachers to arrange conferences as needed

As educators, we know that we do a better job of teaching a child if we have the help and support of

parents/guardians. We are eager to work together to help each child receive the best education possible.

Senior Visits

Counselors will be visiting with government classes beginning in mid-September to review graduation

requirements, career planning, the college application process, financial aid, important dates, etc. Each senior

will meet individually with his/her counselor to review and solidify his/her plan.

Senior Information Night for Parents

The Battlefield High School Counseling Department will present a Senior Information Night for

parents/guardians on Monday, September 21, 2015 at 7:00pm in the school auditorium. Topics will include

graduation requirements, post-graduate planning, and the college admissions process. We strongly encourage

you to attend this important meeting and look forward to seeing you there!

Counseling (cont’d)

Attention Seniors and Parents of Seniors!!!

Get connected with FAMILY CONNECTION! Family Connection is your resource for college and career

planning. Students in grades 9-12 should be logging in and utilizing Family Connection for career exploration,

college, and scholarship searches. It is a web-based program specific to Battlefield High School. It is a critical

resource for seniors to narrow down college searches and compare their choices, create resumes, submit their

senior survey, and request that transcripts be sent to colleges. All transcripts sent to colleges must be requested

by students through Family Connection. Students can access the quick link on the BHS website, click

“students”, then click “Family Connection”. Students may ask the Counseling Center secretary for assistance.

College Fairs

The Western Prince William County Regional College Fair will be held at Osbourn High School on Monday,

September 28, 2015, 6:00pm - 8:00pm. Approximately 100 colleges and universities will be represented. All

seniors and juniors and their parents are strongly encouraged to attend this free event. Osbourn High School is

located at 9005 Tudor Ln, Manassas.

The Eastern Prince William County Regional College Fair will be held at Hylton High School on Thursday,

October 15, 2015, 6:00pm - 8:00pm. Approximately 100 colleges and universities will be represented. All

seniors and juniors and their parents are strongly encouraged to attend this free event. Hylton High School is

located at 14051 Spriggs Rd, Woodbridge.

PSAT – October 14th

The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) will be administered to all

10th

and 11th

grade students at Battlefield High School on Wednesday, October 14th

, 2015. An important first

step toward college, the PSAT is a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT. It also gives

juniors a chance to enter competitions for scholarships and gain access to college and career planning tools.

PWCS pays the testing fee for all 10th

and 11th

grade students. We strongly encourage all sophomores and

juniors to be present on test day and try their best.

Students must remember to bring their own No. 2 pencils with erasers and an approved calculator (scientific or

graphing calculators are recommended) for the PSAT. Pencils and calculators will not be provided on test day.

Students will receive their room assignments the week before the test. The test will run until approximately

11am. All seniors will be involved in senior activities and programming while testing is underway. Please

contact Carol Fitzwater at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Financial Aid Night

The Battlefield High School Counseling Department will host Financial Aid Night for parents/guardians on

Thursday, November 19, 2015 at 7:00pm in the school auditorium.

Virginia Code §22.1-205: Driver Education Programs, requires students to accompany their parents/guardians

to participate in a 90-minute traffic safety program as part of their in-classroom driver education curriculum.

This program requirement must be met before a student receives a Driver Education Certificate of Completion

card (DEC-1 card).

Parents/guardians and students are strongly encouraged to attend the program at the time the student is

enrolled in the classroom driver education course.

Battlefield will hold Driver Education Meetings on the following dates:

September 23, 2015

High School Survival Tips for Parents

1. Be involved in your child’s academic program of study.

Research shows that when parents and families get personally involved in education, their children do

better in school and grow up to be more successful in life. Expect and encourage your children to take

tough academic courses like chemistry, computer technology, a second language, and art. If you haven’t

already, help your child develop good study habits and time management skills by working with him/her

to establish a daily family routine and scheduled homework time. For more information, go to the US

Department of Education website at http://www2.ed.gov/pubs/FamInvolve/index.html.

2. Recognize that attendance is a key to academic success. Research says that the single most important predictor of academic success is good attendance; parents

are the driving force behind attendance. Make every effort to ensure that your child attends school

regularly and notify the school when your child is absent, tardy or leaving early from school by sending a

note or fax (571-261-4604) within two business days of your child’s return to school. When possible,

make all doctor/dentist appointments after school hours. For information on Battlefield’s attendance

policy, reference your child’s agenda, code of behavior, or attendance overview brochure.

3. Get to know your child’s teachers, school counselor, and administrator. Families who stay informed about their child’s progress at school have higher-achieving children. To

keep informed, get to know the names of your child’s teachers, school counselor, and administrator. Stay

in positive contact with school staff and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember that email is a great

tool for quick information, but it’s not such a great tool for dealing with more difficult issues. Call if a

problem arises (571-261-4400).

PARENT SURVIVAL

Page 25: Battlefield High School · learning about the community. If you are a returning Battlefield family, we hope you had a relaxing summer. On Thursday, August 20, 704 freshmen and upper

25

Parent Survival (cont’d)

4. Register for Parent Portal and Family Connection. Parent Portal enables you to track your student’s attendance and grades on assignments, projects, and

tests. Register by clicking on Parent Portal on the BHS homepage. Family Connection helps students

explore careers, colleges, and scholarships and access is provided free of charge for all PWCS students

in grades 9-12.

5. Get your child involved in a positive activity…but don’t overextend. Research shows that students involved in an after-school activity, club, sport, music, etc., are much

more likely to have a positive high school experience and get better grades than students who are not

involved. Indeed, students involved in after-school activities are more likely to avoid alcohol or illegal

drug use, gangs or violence, or sexual activity and gain self-esteem and self-confidence, enhanced

social skills, sportsmanship, exposure to other cultures, and improved time-management skills. To

explore the many clubs and sports available to students at Battlefield, go to the school website and click

on “student activities.”

Remember that after-school activities should not become a burden to your child; he/she should not be

overly tired as a result of over-participation. If after-school activities start interfering with school work

or take up so much time he/she doesn’t have time for family, you may need to cut down the number of

hours he/she spends on it. Keep in mind that each child’s tolerance is different; one child may be able

to handle only one after-school activity whereas another child may be able to participate in three. Your

child’s activities should match his/her needs, interests, and abilities while at the same time

accommodating the family schedule. For more information, go to the US Department of Health and

Human Services website at http://www.samhsa.gov

6. Know your child’s friends.

Research says that when a teenager is faced with a critical decision, the influence of peers (positive

and negative) and parents/families makes the difference; get to know your child’s friends. Meeting

them will give you a sense of their personalities, what they are “into,” and their family situations.

Don’t be too quick to judge a child’s friends though. Radical styles and unconventional appearances

may be nothing more than a badge of identity. While you are getting to know your child’s friends, get

to know their friends’ parents: if you haven’t met them, give them a call. Ask what their expectations

are regarding curfews, sleepovers, and entertainment. Share your rules and views and invite them to

contact you with any questions or concerns regarding the children’s behavior or to clarify

arrangements for their activities. For more information, go to the US Department of Health and

Human Services website at http://family.samhsa.gov

7. Don’t allow your student to get lost in the shuffle. In a large school, a student can get “lost” or “fall through the cracks.” Research says that when a

student makes a positive connection with adults (teacher, school counselor, coach, etc.) it stops this

from happening. Talk to your child about building relationships with adults.

8. All teenagers need proper supervision. This supervision includes supervision of technology. All parents want to keep their children safe and

safety in the cyber world is of particular concern because while adults view it as a place to find

information, teens see it as a communication and socialization tool. What can you do? Help your

child understand the difference between appropriate and inappropriate things to publish on line, locate

the computer in a common area in your home that is accessible by everyone, learn as much as you can

about communication technology and become familiar with chat rooms, instant messaging, and social

networks, invest in internet tracking software and occasionally check on your child, make use of any

blocking, monitoring, or filtering provided by your server, and pay attention to any changes in your

child that might be due to internet use. If you need more information, go to the National Institute on

Media and the Family at www.mediafamily.org.

9. Utilize the Battlefield website. If you don’t know an answer, check the Battlefield website at http://battlefield.groupfusion.net. It is

packed full of information and includes information about events, activities, departments, and more.

Note: The school’s newsletter is posted on line; it can be found by clicking on “newsletter.”

10. Get involved in school yourself. Some of the most successful students are the ones whose parents are at the school, attend functions,

in the PTO, athletic boosters, serve on the advisory council or get involved in some other capacity.

Be “in the know” and use this information to support your child and the school! To get involved with

the PTO, contact Michelle Baker at [email protected]. To join the Boosters, complete and submit

an online membership application by going to battlefield.groupfusion.net; under student activities,

click Boosters. Watch for more information on the website.

Seniors (cont’d)

Attention Seniors and Parents of Seniors!

Here is a fabulous source of information on college and career planning for seniors and their parents:

Get connected with FAMILY CONNECTION! Family Connection is your resource for college and career

planning. Students in grades 9-12 should be logging in and utilizing Family Connection for career exploration,

college, and scholarship searches. It is a web-based program specific to Battlefield High School. It is a critical

resource for seniors to narrow down college searches and compare their choices, create resumes, submit their

senior survey, and request that transcripts be sent to colleges. Note: All transcripts sent to colleges must be

requested by students through Family Connection. Students must then go in person to the Counseling center to

finalize the transcript process by paying the transcript fee. Transcripts will not be mailed until this step is

completed. Students can access the quick link on the BHS website, click “students”, and then click “Family

Connection”. Students may ask the Counseling Center secretary for assistance.

Band:

Welcome Back! Battlefield’s “10 Time Virginia Honor Band” Program looks forward to another exciting year.

Preparation for this upcoming season began during the summer months as the Marching Bobcats started

working on this season’s dynamic show,” Fire and Ice”.

In addition to performing during halftime at all BHS home Football Games, the Bobcats have a busy agenda

with several parades and competitions on the schedule, including the James Madison University Parade of

Champions.

The band’s hard work will help prepare them for their annual assessment in front of the Virginia Band &

Orchestra Directors Association as they strive to become an “11 Time Virginia Honor Band”.

As BHS enters our 12th

year, the band is in need of several new items including new Marching Band uniforms,

new and repaired instruments, equipment trailer repairs, and sound system updates. We are focusing on strong

fundraising efforts through TAG day donations, Amazon Smile, donut sales at home Varsity Football Games,

car wash events, Entertainment books, candle and ornament sales and much more!

The fun does not end at the end of the Marching Band season, as all three of BHS’ concert bands have multiple

performances on the schedule for the upcoming school year.

We look forward to your support, and we invite you to follow our activities on the band’s website:

http://www.battlefieldbands.com/

Best wishes to all,

Chorus:

Battlefield Choirs are poised to have a very

active and exciting year. Under the

direction of Mr. Doug Burney, the choirs

will continue the established tradition of

excellence by performing in-house concerts

and traveling abroad to sing in locations

where music history has been made. The

first opportunity to hear the Battlefield

Choirs will be the annual Pyramid concert.

An unprecedented success last year, the

Pyramid concert will bring together high

school and middle school students in a celebration of song. The Choirs will continue to perform local concerts

in the fall and winter, culminating with the Winter Concert in December. Spring 2016 will be highlighted by a

trip to Germany where students will perform in historically

significant venues and compete to retain their “all gold”

status, achieved in Boston last year. The final concert of the

year will feature music direct from Broadway – students

will be preparing for this special concert throughout the

entire school year.

Parent volunteers are a key part of the success of the

Battlefield Choirs. All “choir parents” are members of the

Battlefield Choral Boosters. Being involved with the

Boosters is a great way to stay connected with your

student(s) and to get involved in their school activities.

There are numerous ways in which parents can get

involved: concert organization, ticket sales, concessions, choir uniform distribution, marketing… and many

more! A new Boosters website (www.battlefieldchoirs.org) is being created to keep students, parents and choir

fans informed of events and activities. To be included on the email distribution list, please send an email to

[email protected].

The 2015-16 school year promises to be a memorable one – join the fun of Battlefield Choirs!!
