Battles of the Civil War
Battle of Fort Sumter
1st Battle of Bull Run(Manassas)
Underdog Victory• Many Northerners thought this war would
be over within a few months–Civilians even picnicked along the
battlefield!• South pulled a surprising victory,
foreshadowing the possibility of a longer war
• Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson earns his nickname
Battle of Shiloh(Pittsburg Landing)
A new star?• Ulysses S. Grant emerges as
a new Union commander• major battle victory for the
North in the West• Gave them access to Northern
Mississippi River
Monitor vs Merrimak
Battle of the Future
• Battle between two ships that are modern marvels/never used before
• Early look into future battles between battleships
Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg)
Goals have changed• Bloodiest day in American history
– Both sides see massive casualties• Emancipation Proclamation tied to a Union
“victory”– Northerners could rally around ending slavery– Eliminating slave labor hurts the southern
economy– Halts any chance of foreign aid for south from
nations needing their cotton (especially G.B.)
Battle of Fredericksburg
Southern Slaughter• Burnside wanted to cross the
Rappahannock River to attack Confederates–Delay in receiving pontoon boats slowed
Union• South prepared behind a wall on the top of
a hill–Union soldiers repeatedly charged
uphill, taking heavy casualties–video
Battle of Gettysburg
Turning Point• Searching for relief of southern fields, Lee heads
North– Searches for shoes in central PA– J.E.B. Stuart, Lee’s eyes, off making a name for
himself leads to CSA and USA bumping into one another
• 3 day battle ensues• Two key points:
– Joshua Chamberlain– Pickett’s Charge
Remember Fredericksburg• Chamberlain
– Calls for a downhill charge to save the end of the Union line
• Pickett’s Charge– Confederate charge of over a mile of open
land– Had to cross fenced road that slowed march
as well– Union ready behind a rock wall, force heavy
casualties– “Sir, I have no division”
Siege of Vicksburg
Wait it out• Siege- surround an enemy and hold supplies, etc
from them• Vicksburg was the last Southern stronghold on
the Mississippi River• Huge victory for the Grant and Union only a day
after Gettysburg
Sherman’s March to the Sea
Total Warfare
• Sherman cuts a path through Georgia to the Atlantic Ocean
• Total war-destroying cities, crops, and any supplies the south could use
• Burns the city of Atlanta to the ground
Surrender at Appomattox
End of the Eastern war• Lee surrenders to Grant at farmer
McLean’s home (he moved from Manassas after battle to start the war!)
• Not the official end to the war, but signals that the Confederacy is all but lost
