Make sure you pack a raincoat if you’re heading down to the opening

of Turners’ brand spanking new purpose built site on Hull Rd

this weekend. Supercar fanatics will be drooling over a

2015 McLaren P1 – valued at $2.5 to $2.8 million – that is on display at the new site today and Saturday.

Daniel Peet of Turners says this is a rare opportunity because of the 375 cars built globally only one lives in New Zealand.

“The McLaren is a modern hybrid supercar with turbocharged combustion and electric engines producing 903bhp and 978nm of torque.

“Under the hood there’s a 3.8ltr, V8 twin turbo, and it can hit a top speed of 350km/h.

“Acceleration wise it goes nought to a hundred in just 2.8 seconds, and can reach 300km/h in 16.5 seconds.”

Needless to say, when asked

if he’d love to own one the answer was a simple, “Yes please.”

Along with the McLarenP1 on display, everyone who ventures down to the new site on Saturday could end up driving away with a 2005 Honda Fit which the Turners team is giving away.

All you need to do is turn up on Saturday, put your name in the draw and make sure you’re on the site at 12pm to claim the prize.

Daniel says this is a bit of thank you to all their customers ‘from the past and in the future’.

“We also want to show people what Turners is all about now.

“There’s a range of cars from value cars to near new models, we can do trade-ins, all your finance, pretty much everything. We’re not even called Turners Auctions any more, we’re just Turners.” By David Tauranga

The only 2015 McLaren P1 in

New Zealand will be on display at the new Turners site on Hull Rd today and

Calling all Western Bay of Plenty tradies and small business owners. Sideline Sid has found a vehicle for you that combines fuel economy,

practicality, smart style and three-way easy access to a huge-volume interior.

The New Toyota Hiace ZL petrol van from Pacifi c Toyota on the corner of Cameron Rd and Elizabeth St in Tauranga comes to the market with increased fuel economy courtesy of a six-speed automatic gearbox and rear wheel drive.

Versatility in spades awaits buyers of the New Toyota Hiace ZL. The Toyota ZL we took out for a test drive is ready-to-go business vehicle with a deserved reputa-tion as New Zealand’s most reliable workhorse.

Buyers are spoiled for choice with petrol and diesel options and further choices of a panel van or full-sized window options. The top of range diesel full-window van can turn itself into a family recrea-tion vehicle, with the addition of seating for

a further three people and a heap of fl oor to ceiling storage space.

In order to get a true indication of the Hiace ZL’s driving capa-bilities, we took the expressway to Bethlehem then backtracked to The Lakes Housing Estate, before driving all the way along Cameron Rd in mid-morning city traffi c.

Driving along the expressway, the Hiace ZL drove more like a family sedan than a tradies’ work unit, with acceleration to zip past slow traffi c and up the hill to Bethlehem with ease.

The test drive jaunt con-tinued out to the main road before a hanging left to the toll plaza roundabout and then on to the The Lakes.

Sid particularly liked the high front seats that gave an unin-

terrupted view to the front and the large side mirrors that made viewing the fol-lowing vehicles a breeze.Initial hesitations about the

big step-up required to get into the driver’s seat, were dispelled with a small step and conveni-ently situated handle inside the cab.

In keeping with our usual order of review of drive, stop and inspect the test vehicle before returning to home base, we parked up beside Lake Taurikura.

The manmade freshwater lake is the jewel in the crown of The Lakes development and was a perfect place to give the Hiace ZL the once over.

With a multitude of commercial vans scat-tered around new home-builds, there were a few furtive glances as the new contender for Tradie Vehicle of the Year strutted past a mixture of different work vans.

The Hiace ZL exterior has clean lines, with a distinctive sleek windscreen angle and a touch of class with a black front bumper and a silver painted grill. Likewise, the rear bumper is in black with refl ectors and a high mounted LED stop light.

Sitting in the hot seat of the driver’s seat is a practical dashboard with the four-spoke soft-feel steering wheel having audio con-trols at your fi ngertips.

However, what really grabbed the review-er’s attention was the potential offi ce on wheels for busy tradies and small business owners.

The two front seats were separated by a very big storage divider that can house a large amount of today’s required paperwork.

The interior practicality extends to a tray, with edges, on top of the storage consul and two drink-holders on the back of the divider. Communication is provided by way of Bluetooth hands-free phone connection and audio streaming capability.

While the Hiace ZL has sedan-like features of front seat air conditioning and cruise control, the Toyota vehicle is unashamedly a workhorse.

Two side opening doors for easy access to the middle of the van and a big rear door that effortlessly swings up to reveal the huge 6000 litre space for shifting things or car-rying equipment. The brand new Hiace ZL we took out to test drive, with 29km on the clock, was a blank canvas awaiting a fi tout that would turn it into a ready to go trade or commercial vehicle.

The Toyota Hiace also comes in two other models, with the ZX Diesel windowed van which will also easily swallow standard building products and the top of the range Hiace Mini Bus.

The Mini Bus has ample interior space, an easy entry and exit sliding door and seating for 12 passengers, which would make it an ideal community transport vehicle.

What has 105 grille slots, 60 wheels and crawls up

and down hills?Answer: A Jeep Driver Training

convoy. In the weekend a lucky group of 15 owners of the iconic American seven-grille 4x4s were treated to a day of instruction and experimenting with Drive Zone, hosted by Farmer AutoVillage, at TECT All-Terrain park.

The Sun’s BAY DRIVER team tagged along with a Wrangler and cameras to catch the experience.

Specialist driver trainers John and Lorraine James operate Drive Zone, and its offshoot, Adventure 4x4. The Jeep day was specifi c to that brand, with 15 Cherokee, Grand Chero-kee and Wrangler owners given the opportunity to learn and test their machines over a variety of terrain.

The day started with vehicle knowl-edge and some pre-drive checks, then handling characteristics in two and four wheel drive; stability and braking.

This was followed by practical driving, on grass inclines, gravel and forest tracks. The practical session included hill climb, descent, failed climb, gear selection, suspension and drive systems.

As a Jeep owner it was the perfect time and place to get re-acquainted with the special abilities of the Wrangler in a controlled environ-ment, with plenty of expert advice on tap. For new owners, it was a valu-able learning experience to fi nd out exactly what these vehicles are capable of, and what puts them at the top of the game in off-road ability.

There was plenty of ‘Jeep talk’ fl ow-ing between the driving sessions, and

as much was learnt leaning on the siderails as behind the wheels.

The modern Jeeps, with automatic hill descent control, make tackling steep terrain easy and safe. Even Jeeps straight off the yard with road tyres and suspension are highly capable, without any mods.

There were grins all over the circuit as drivers completed the variety of climbs and descents, all in perfect control.

The day ended with a forest track drive through the wilds of the All Terrain park, putting to use all the techniques learnt earlier on the grass circuit.

A great day out, highly recom-mended to any Jeep owner. Our thanks to the team at Bay Chrysler Jeep Dodge and John and Lorraine at Drive Zone.

A symphony of revving engines awaits all classic car lovers making the jaunt to Whangamata for the

Repco Beach Hop this weekend.Already in full swing after opening on Wednesday, the Hop

is New Zealand’s largest fi ve day festival celebrating the best of 50s and 60s culture, and runs until Sunday.

Organiser Noddy Watts says no matter what your passion – whether it’s cars, music, or rock’n’roll dancing – the Hop has got everything you want and more.

“The event is looking amazing this year and that’s due to the hard work from the organising team,” says Noddy. “Cars are a huge part of the Hop but it’s also about the fashion, the culture, the music.

“It’s like we’ve turned the town back to what it was like in 1962. Think Happy Days, Grease and American Graffi ti – that’s what Whangamata becomes.”

Lovers of the hopIn 2014 it was estimated 70,000 people turned out on the

Friday of the festival, followed by 110,000 on the Saturday. Noddy is also impressed that for previous festivals it would

take roughly a couple of months for pre-registrations to sell out, but for this year’s event 1000 cars signed up in only 24 hours.

“We sold out in 24 hours – that is just insane and it’s the fi rst time that has ever happened to us. Heck, I don’t think that’s ever happened anywhere that I know of. For a car event to sell out in a day is pretty crazy.”

The grand parade from the surf club through the Whanga-mata Township starts on Saturday at 9am and Noddy says it’s guaranteed to be a great time for everyone involved.

Then later on, the major prize draw will take place and one lucky person will have the choice of taking home either a 1950 Ford Mercury, a Betty Boop Retro Caravan, or $10,000 in cash.

To get in the draw all people need to do is simply buy a $5 programme, fi ll out the entry form stashed inside correctly, and then make sure you hang around to see if your name is called.

“If a vehicle is chosen then the other will be auctioned on

the spot, while the cash will be given away to a Repco Beach Hop 15 vehicle entrant on the Sunday.”

Loyal as the day is longBefore the event even started, Noddy says if you were to

drive through Whangamata it was jam packed with amazing, beautiful cars.

Being a ‘car guy’ his neck always snaps around when he sees a beauty go by, which is why it’s pretty sore now, jokes Noddy.

“We also give away a car or two every festival, and by Tues-day I’d already seen three from previous years.

“The Hop has got a very loyal following, there’s a lot of

regular people who come every year, but there’s also a lot of new people as well.”

This loyalty to the Hop can be perfectly summed up by one Australian car builder who is attending this year’s festival.

Noddy says a lot of people build cars with the specifi c goal of debuting them at the Hop.

“We had a car arrive on Monday, a 1952 Chevrolet Delivery built and brought over by a guy from Australia. It’s basically only done 1.5km when he drove it into a shipping container.

“The Australian clubs wanted it to debut at major shows over there, but the owner said no, because he’s been to the Hop numerous times and he wants it debuted here.”
