Forget about high entry costs turning aspiring drivers away from speedway racing, Baypark promoter Bernie Gillon is aiming to attract more drivers with the six shooter sprint class.

“It’s a class that has a huge lot of potential,” says Bernie.

Six shooters is a wingless version of sprint cars having its debut of the season at ASB Baypark on Saturday following a successful showcase at the track in April.

“It really got people sitting up and taking notice of just how fast they can go. Everyone was amazed they’re as quick around Baypark as super saloons.”

Bernie, who also owns racing car supply busi-ness Flamecrusher, says there was strong interest in the class following the April meeting which had seen his workshop produce two six shoot-ers. This weekend he’s expecting a handful of new drivers to debut in the class including his son Jason, who is stepping up from mini stocks, and Tauranga driver Rob Sherris.

“Compared to stock cars, for example, where you have to spend about $40,000 for a top car, you only have to spend $18,000 for a very competitive six shooter.”

Powered by unmodifi ed V6 Holden engines – which can see the cars reach speeds of about 70 miles per hour (or 112km/h) – and running

on old sprint car chassis’, Bernie believes they’re a “great stepping stone” for younger drivers coming out of Mini Stocks when they reach 17.

His enthusiasm is supported by national Sprint Car champion Rodney Wood of Tau-ranga, who is among the top drivers who’ve thrown their support behind the class, which he occasionally competes in.

Rodney describes the wingless sprint cars as “defi nitely a more affordable class for people to experience open wheel racing”.

“You can get a great feel for the thrill of speed-way racing with a six shooter. It doesn’t have quite the same adrenalin as sprint racing, but it’s pretty close,” says Rodney, who won’t be racing himself on Saturday.

Baypark has joined Auckland’s Waikaraka Park, King Country’s Kihi Kihi and Gisborne’s speedway as the fourth track where it’s sanc-tioned as a regional class.

Six shooters are not sanctioned as a national class, but Bernie dismisses this as a minor issue, saying it simply means an offi cial national title can’t be offered.

This Saturday’s speedway meeting will also see drivers competing in mini stocks, stock cars, saloons, super saloons and sprint cars. For more details see: www.bayparkspeedway.co.nz/events

SPECS

When Sideline Sid arrived at Bay Subaru at the Farmer Auto Village in Mount Maunganui to test drive a Subaru WRX Premium, he saw

on fi rst inspection a snazzy-looking, around-town sedan in vivid blue – however, out on the open road Sid found a “wolf in sheep’s clothing”.

During 19 years of international rallying success, including three consecutive World Rally Championships, Subaru was also fi ne-tuning their unique technologies with the brand’s rallying performance know-how used

to create the Subaru WRX.On picking up the Subaru

WRX to take out for a spin, I asked the sales person to describe the car in a few words.

After some considered thought, the reply was the Subaru WRX is a “driver’s car” that looks like an everyday sedan but performs like a sports car.

The Subaru WRX ticks all the boxes as an around-town sedan with keyless entry, sat nav, power steering, automatic headlights and wipers and exceptional climate control.

In the driving seatSitting in the top of the range

WRX Premium, with its generous width leather seats, there’s out-standing vision provided by the very big rear-view mirrors.

Slap bang in front of the driver is an instrument cluster that provides a myriad of informa-tion. Standing out in the driver’s line of sight is a very prominent speedometer and with the power under the bonnet is compulsory viewing when out on the open road.

The adjustable steering wheel and the powered driver seat adjustments provide the fi rst hint of a genuine driver’s car.

An outstanding repertoire

of steering wheel controls allows the driver to give his undivided atten-

tion to facing the challenges of traffi c on the road.

At the touch of a fi nger the driver can operate the audio and cruise controls and drop into the

Subaru WRX sports mode courtesy of SI-DRIVE control.

Subaru’s attention to detail carries over into the entertainment unit. A CD player and AM/FM radio is powered by six speakers.

The bluetooth wireless technology comes with hands-free mobile communication and is accompanied with audio streaming, voice command recognition and a USB port.

Open highwaysOn a quiet Saturday morning, Sideline

Sid put the Subaru WRX through its paces heading towards Rotorua, then a more gentle return back to Farmer Auto Village via Papa-moa Beach Rd with Mount Maunganui in the foreground.

Living in our own slice of paradise we don’t always appreciate the beauty of the Western Bay of Plenty, with Mauao taking centre stage in picture perfect surroundings.

The sheer power of the Subaru WRX gives an exhilarating drive out on the open highway.

The 2.0 litre direct injection turbo-charged engine with Electronic Throttle Control and Active Valve Control System delivers more power in the early rev range.

What all that fancy sales brochure talk means, is when you put your foot to the pedal the WRX explodes in action with outstanding acceleration.

Versatile handlingBut with all this power also comes ultimate

control, thanks to Symmetrical All Wheel Drive, Vehicle Dynamics Control system and a fully independent double wishbone rear suspension system that gives sharper handling, better balance and instinctive responsiveness.

But wait there’s more. At the drop of a light touch on the steering wheel SI Drive control, the Subaru WRX drops into performance mode with an engine straining to unleash its horse power. An AU certifi ed test confi rmed the 0-100km acceleration at six seconds, which is seriously quick for a vehicle that’s just as at home doing chores around town as hitting the highway in serious driving mode.

Versatility is the name of the game with the Subaru WRX. The sports car-like perfor-mance is matched with a car that provides plenty of driver and passenger comfort, with a huge boot ideal for travelling away for extended periods.

The Subaru WRX is also is extremely fuel effi cient with a combined fuel consumption of 8.61 litres per 100km.

Anyone looking for brand new, out-of-the-box sedan with performance to burn could do little better than take a Subaru WRX from Bay Subaru for a test drive – you won’t be disappointed.

proud to support

Western Bay Driving.

Bayride works alongside Christine Welch, to help educate and equip new motorcycle riders as well as those returning to this enjoyable and affordable mode of transport.

Born into me was the passion for moto sports.

When I was a little ankle-biter, my father regularly took me out on his dirt bikes and road bikes.

My fi rst solitary hack in a paddock at about four years old.

For some years now I’ve been overly anxious and excited to get my road bike licence; so it’s time I stop twiddling thumb and apply for it!

The experience of applying for my basic handling skills entailed a banquet of humble pie when I realised this wasn’t going to be some relaxing Sunday ride.

Bayride’s instructor Christine was very posi-tive and reassuring. With application of her simple, easy-to-follow instructions, I was trained out of my foul motocross habits. For example, using my rear brakes for emergency stops and plunging my foot into corners. With great relief I passed my test.

Bayride and Chris don’t want to simply pass their students, they want to ensure their riders are going to be well-equipped with skills and

be safe once they hit the road. Month-by-month, at no cost,

Chris takes her learner students all around the North Island on a group tour, imparting valuable riding skills to ensure students have enough subse-

quent experience to ride on the road safely. Accompanying these rides are a carry van and

paramedic. These tours are considered to be great fun

and offer reassurance for the riders, and their parents and partners, knowing they’ll be looked after beyond the point of applying for their L plates.
