My first Christmas in St. Petersburg, half a lifetime ago, was my first time attending a lighted boat parade. What a gift to a Tampa Bay newcomer. I was flabbergasted at the sight of watercraft bedecked with lights and wreaths, Santa elves and reindeer, even creche scenes. Many blasted carols, secular and sacred. And the people assembled on those boats seemed to be of exceptionally good cheer.

We hope to pass along some of that celebratory spirit in this issue of Bay. Youll experience some of the stellar views that charm both natives and tourists. Youll learn about a couple of new art installations, some last-minute gift ideas, various fashion trends and a destination or two.

Come February, Wine Weekend St. Pete opens the half-century celebration for the Museum of Fine Arts, bringing winemakers from two dynasties to town. In addition to their professional accomplishments, Gina Gallo and Jean-Charles Boisset are married to each other.

St. Petersburgs Central Arts District is increasingly awash in murals these days. These bold displays make an even bolder statement about a city that has shed the stodgy impression that many have of it.

In that regard, its kind of like the new Corvette Stingray. So its somewhat fitting to pair the car next to one of downtowns most graphic works.

When Chevy rolled out the seventh-generation Corvette last year, it upset some purists no round taillights! but its sculpted styling and second-to-none performance provoked many to look anew at Americas Sports Car. And isnt that what art is supposed to do prod us into seeing something in a new light?

Well, mission accomplished, Chevrolet.This 2015 coupe recalls the iconic Stingrays of the 1960s

with its swept-back roof and sleek stance. Want to be noticed?

BEAUTY MEETS BRAWN


The new Corvettes bold style has prompted many to look anew at Americas Sports Car, although some purists are displeased with the departure from round taillights.

This Vette positively pops from its modernist backdrop with Velocity Yel-low Tintcoat paint (a $995 option) and black aluminum wheels highlighted by yellow brake calipers. While fans of expensive European sports cars may scoff, this all-American sports car now carries some of the latest automotive technology (carbon fiber, aluminum space-frame, magnetic-ride suspen-sion), which makes it an even better performance bargain.

For 2015, theres also a more refined 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Under the clamshell hood, the 6.2-liter V-8 puts out 460 throaty horsepower while also getting almost 30 mpg on the highway thanks to active fuel management. Hows that for combining muscle and gas mile-age?

In Touring mode, one of five settings, the shifts are almost imperceptible and the low-to-the-ground Stingrays ride is comfortable enough for your daily commute. The speed-sense power steering has a nicely weighted feel and, as we can attest, the Stingray makes the perfect companion for tour-

ing the citys mural landscape. With the turn of a dial, you can adjust the ride there also are Weather, Eco, Sport and Track settings to fit your driving conditions. Of course, if you want to fully experience the eight-cyl-inder symphony, the summon the thunder in Track mode; the optional performance exhaust changes its sound with the driving mode.

Inside, Chevy has done another image makeover. The cockpit is now driver-centered and the quality always a work in progress with Corvette comes close to matching the level of the cars performance. Now you can cushion yourself in leather-draped surfaces velvety Napa leather seats and detail stitching, anyone? Of course, this being a modern Vette, the tech enhancements include a color Head-Up Display, a customizable driver-information cluster, and optional performance-data and video recorder. Chevy has even added mobile Wi-Fi capability.

The only thing the Stingray doesnt come with is a striking backdrop. For that, youll have to take your own artistic tour.

Luftwerk, the Chicago artist team of Sean Gallero and Petra Bachmaier, creates spectacular light-based installations through-out the United States and was commissioned to create a work called Translucence for Pavilion XXIX, the fundraising gala at the Tampa Museum of Art. The 48 large panels of glass in the Morsani Atrium and lobby were transformed into a kaleidoscopic wonder, which you see here. It has been taken down, but the good news is the duo returns to Tampa in February with a new work for Lights on Tampa, in downtowns Kiley Garden.

Gone-pop girl Taylor Swift may not be feeling the love from her former country peers this Christmas season, but Santa sure is. You have probably seen a Pablo Picasso exhibition, and you surely have seen a Dal exhibition since the world-class Dal Museum is in St. Petersburg. But you have never seen them together until now. The museum organized the historic Picasso/Dal, Dal/Picasso, which puts the two great 20th century Spanish artists side by side for direct comparisons and assessments, a dream of executive director Hank Hine more than a decade in the making. Works come from major museums in the United States and Europe and from distinguished private collectors. Some have never been shown before in the United States. So Brad and Angelina own a chateau and make a lovely ros in Provence.

Just one? Big deal. The true superstar cou-ple of wine are Gina and Jean-Charles, who have more chateaus, ranchos, bodegas, win-eries big and small and labels grand and petite

than even the most devout groupie can count.More than 20? At least.Each.You would know them better as Ms. Gallo and M. Boisset,

the names of two families who have built enormous wine empires in the New World and the Old in less than a century.

Yet both are the bright faces of a younger generation of their dynasties, working royalty if you will and new par-ents. Always busy, whether she is in vineyard boots prowl-ing the wet floors of the tank rooms or he is dashing between landmark estates in silk shirts and fast cars.

They will be in debonair dress and full-on charm when they visit St. Petersburg this winter to accept the honors of guest star vintners at the Museum of Fine Arts Wine Week-end St. Pete 2015.

Recognition runs in the families. Hers started in Cal-ifornias Central Valley in 1933. E&J Gallo now is the larg-est winery in the world, with more than 60 brands, from Andr and Hearty Burgundy to the most respected terroir and single vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, the Columbia Valley, Catalyud and Tuscany.

His began assembling vineyards in Burgundy in the 1960s and, with young Boissets help, in California in the 90s. The Boisset Collection comprises more than 25 win-eries, including historic American names like Buena Vista, DeLoach and Raymond, and the French stalwarts of Bouchard, Moreau, Mommessin and gran cru vineyards and monopoles in Vougeot and Corton-Charlemagne.

Gina and Jean-Charles married five years ago and will arrive together in St. Petersburg next year, a rare double treat for Florida wine lovers. Their rich heritages will cele-brate the museums Cheers to 50 Years.

Boisset attended the Wine Weekend two years ago at the invitation of event chairwoman Patricia Rossignol and her husband, Jean-Francois, and this year, Boisset arranged schedules to bring Gina as well.

In California they share one of the most famous houses in Napa, the former home of Robert Mondavi, with the next vintners in line, their twin girls and French bulldog. Frenchie, by the way, has his own line of wines (and videos) with his happy mug on the labels as Napolon, Betsy Ross and more.

The couple love to taste each others wines, Boisset says, and some from Oregon and Texas, two places where neither has wineries. They both enjoyed a terrific string of sunny

Old Sonoma County is where she made her name and remade Gallos 20 years ago when she elevated old family vineyards to produce estate cabernet sauvignons and chardonnays.

Boissets heritage and first grand wines were in France until he fell in love with Californias old vines and fresh surf.

Oddly, Gallo and Boisset never crossed paths in California: They met in Bordeaux at Vin-expo, the giant biennial trade fair, in 2000.

The foreign exchange has been robust and beneficial. He showed her the vast, intricate diversity of Burgundys famously finicky terroir.

What did he learn from her?How to be a better husband. And father. Every day. He laughs.Now they both make and sell wines all over the world, and each cheerfully makes wine

affordable by the jug and box for the most humble table.They also produce exceptional wines for oenophiles willing to pay top price. On those they

put their personal names. Gina Gallo is broadly signed across the 90-, 92-, and 94-point Sig-nature Series. JCB in all caps shouts on top of Boissets most imaginative creations.

Theyll bring some of each to St. Petersburg in February for grand dinners, rare auction lots and tasting. For now, theyre off to China. Again. Its a very big market on the agenda of any empire.

Ultimately, Gallo and Boisset know chateaus dont matter. What counts is the vineyards. Like good rulers of any kind, they want to know each plot in detail and select the best for their own.

Lange Farm in east Pasco hill country is a sought-after destination for a range of corporate and private events. Buts also just a pretty place to visit.

Pasco hill country, where ancient oaks and the ropes of gray Spanish moss that adorn their branches seem to call to people.

More than 25 years ago, Tom and Sue Lange purchased a sprawling property near Dade City, figuring theyd eventually build a house and resettle their family from north Tampa.

Back then, Tom Lange told a reporter, It looked like the Indians were the last to live here. We took out the dead trees, put in a fence around the property and began to dream about what we could do with this.

Friends suggested that they try temporary quarters before making a permanent transfer. They moved into a mobile home on the site. They owned horses, and the first building they erected was a barn to house the first foal born there.

Pretty soon after that, neighbors in the area persuaded them to build an equestrian center. They began hosting corporate events, charity fundraisers and yearly rodeos.

One of the couples sons had developmental problems, and the Langes decided to stay in Tampa, where medical specialists are nearby. Over time, the farm has become a destination for horse lovers, retreats, family reunions, and, above all, weddings, about 150 of which take place on the grounds each year.

Our farm is your farm now, Sarah Ruiz, an event coordinator at the farm, says. Guests often return for maternity photo shoots and anniversary picnics.

The Garden House has a wraparound porch and climate-controlled interior. The Antique Barn is more rustic (read: no air conditioning). The Vintage Cottage recently opened a venue for gatherings such as bridesmaids luncheons, bridal and baby showers and birthday parties.

On a tour of the property, Ruiz points out several large oak trees, gazebos and fence-lined pathways that are favorite wedding sites. Outdoor games such as horseshoes are popular, and she says families often pay a little more for bonfires and special Smores packages the farm can supply.

Candlelight and fireflies, porcelain table settings and vintage farm implements: a bit differ-ent than the Langes initial idea, perhaps, but a dream come true for many a visitor.
