Jeff WatanabeJeff Watanabe has served on the board of directors of the Consuelo Foundation for 25 years, and as its chair for more than 20 years. In 2013, the Consuelo Foundation, under Jeff’s leadership, committed more than $3 million for Project H.O.P.E. to help rebuild Philippine communities in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, the strongest storm to ever to make landfall. The Consuelo Foundation also supports and operates programs that prevent and treat abuse, neglect and the exploitation of children, women and families in Hawai‘i and the Philippines. Jeff is the retired founding partner of the law firm, Watanabe Ing, and currently serves as chairman of the board at Hawaiian Electric Industries.

Tim JohnsTim Johns is currently an Executive Vice President and Chief Consumer Officer at HMSA, and was formerly CEO of Bishop Museum and chairman of the Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources, under Governor Ben Cayetano. While serving as Vice President of AmFac, Tim championed donating to Filipino Community Center two acres of land, next to the old Oahu Sugar Mill in Waipahu. The FilCom Center was built on these donated lands, and in June 2002, the FilCom Center was formally inaugurated. Tim is also a member of the board of directors of the Consuelo Foundation, which supports and operates programs that prevent and treat abuse, neglect and the exploitation of children, women and families in Hawai‘i and the Philippines.

Amy AgbayaniIn 2016, Amy Agbayani will be retiring from the University of Hawai‘i. For over forty years, Amy has been a faculty member, and later became Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Diversity and Director of Student Equity, Excellence and Diversity (SEED). She secured millions of dollars for scholarships and expanded her office to be one of the most comprehensive university diversity programs in the nation. Co-founder of Operation Manong, which helped Filipino immigrant students, Amy broadened her efforts to other immigrants, African Americans, Pacific Islanders and other underrepresented groups, women, LGBT, students with disabilities, pre-school children and for those needing a voice. Amy formerly chaired the Hawai’i Civil Rights Commission and FilCom Board of Directors.

Domingo Los BanosDomingo Los Banos was a teenager when he traveled overseas as a U.S. soldier in World War II along with another 300 Hawai‘i recruits, assigned to the U.S. Army’s 1st Filipino Infantry Regiment, which General MacArthur deployed in his retaking of the Philippines. Domingo promised God that if he survived the war he would become a teacher. After the war, he earned his degree in education on the mainland, and returned to his home on Kaua‘i to become a teacher and coach. Domingo later became the first Filipino principal and district superintendent. Since retiring from the Department of Education, Domingo continued his educational efforts, teaching a wider audience about the heroic efforts of the Filipino soldiers who fought in World War II. Domingo helped spearhead the production of the documentary, “An Untold Triumph: America’s Filipino Soldiers.”

Lynn WatanabeFor 28 years, Lynn Watanabe has served on the boards of Aloha Medical Mission which organizes missions to the Philippines and other developing countries. Thirty years ago, she helped start the Child & Family Service Guild which was instrumental in founding the award-winning Child & Family Service Philippines, headquartered in Baguio. The vision of Child & Family Service Philippines is healthy children and women achieving their full potential nurtured by caring families and living in safe and enabling communities. Lynn currently chairs the board of directors for Child & Family Service Philippines.

Maggie DomingoConsidered one of the matriarchs of the local Filipino community, Maggie Domingo has spent her entire career recognizing outstanding students, promoting education, raising scholarship funds and perpetuating the Filipino heritage and culture. Affectionately known as “Aunty Maggie,” those close to her believe that her “mothering and mentoring skills” have been felt by hundreds, perhaps thousands of people, whom she has influenced through the years. For years she had one of the most popular radio programs on KNDI. Maggie was the first female president of United Filipino Council of Hawai‘i (UFCH), the statewide umbrella organization for all Filipino groups in Hawai‘i. For more than two decades, Maggie led Philippine Cultural Foundation of Hawai‘i (PCFH), a prestigious organization that preserves and perpetuates cultural heritage and traditional values.

The term bayanihan refers to a spirit of communal unity or effort to achieve a particular objective. For the past several decades, these

community leaders have exemplified that bayanihan spirit.
