As many as 99 local children with diabetes now have access to vital health

services closer to home thanks to Redland

Hospital’s new Paediatric Diabetes Clinic.

The clinic, which began in January will serve as a one-

stop-shop for children and their families to access care

from a Paediatric Consultant, Diabetes Clinical Nurse,

dietician and psychologist.

Redland Hospital Director Paediatrics Dr Dougie

Thomas said the new clinic was another great example

- and the first of many more - of developing more local

services for local children.

He said Redland Hospital’s long term strategy was

to provide families on the Bayside with local care for

not only diabetes but other specialities including

gastroenterology, rheumatology, oncology and

haematology.

Diabetes Clinical Nurse Anna Rowsome said the new

service would make a huge difference to parents who

before now had to travel to the Queensland Children’s

Hospital at South Brisbane for their child’s diabetes

review.

“Our consultants work with the Endocrinology team at

the Queensland Children’s Hospital to identify which

patients can receive their care at Redland Hospital,”

she said.

“Depending on the needs of each patient, a child will

generally have a review of their condition every three

months.”

Anna said children up to age 17 could attend the clinic

and receive the care they needed with transition to

local adult services as appropriate.

“Diabetes is a very intensive condition to manage,” she

said.

“For kids with diabetes, it is something they need to

think about every time they eat and every time they

exercise.

“It is not something you can leave alone even for a day

and it is a disease families and schools need to be

involved in.

“It is great that Redland Hospital can now provide

local families with more accessible support around the

practical elements of their child’s care with monitoring,

injections and side effects,” Anna said.

“We can also troubleshoot any issues they are

having or refer more complex matters to a consultant

depending on the needs of the patient.”

Mum Natalie Harris said having a clinic available so

much closer to home was amazing and would make a

huge difference to their lives.

She said her son Dexter needed to visit the hospital

about every three months to ensure he was on track

and where he needed to be with his care.

“He was missing so much school just to get to his

appointments at Queensland Children’s Hospital so

this will be amazing,” she said.

It’s time to take stock and check your hand hygiene is up to scratch.

CNC Infection Control Vicky Bruton said ‘Bare Below the Elbows’ (BBE) promoted the removal of wrist watches, bracelets, rings and clothing below the elbow as well as short clean nails when providing clinical care for patients.

She said BBE was an effective compliment to the five moments hand hygiene program which together, significantly reduced the risk of transmission of organisms from staff to patients and patients to staff.

“This is something that all clinical staff should be practicing in the clinical space. We know that it is a worthwhile strategy for practising Infection Control.”

Vicky said a recent mock survey identified that several staff had been noted as not being BBE and that now was a good time to remind everyone about the importance of doing the right thing.

“We are asking staff not only to be BBE themselves but also to remind their colleagues to be BBE.

“So, polish off your fob watches and get rid of those wrist watches. It is everybody’s responsibility,” Vicky said.

She said her Infection Control colleague Robyn Birch was also excited to announce that Infection Control and BBE promotional activities were planned for staff and patients over the next few weeks, so watch this space!
