Welcome to the Center for Global Engagement

The staff of the Center for Global Engagement welcomes you to Florida State University. We appreciate and value the cultural diversity the exchange programs bring to campus, and we hope that you will have a very meaningful and culturally enriching experience during your time here.

The Beyond Borders Cultural Exchanges have been ongoing between FSU, Germany and Jamaica for many years. They have provided great opportunities for all involved students to increase their cultural awareness and understanding of other cultures. The recent exchange between FSU and the University of West Indies to provide internships for select students in the MA Higher Education programs at each campus brings about new opportunities for professional development.

The Center for Global Engagement staff is here to support you throughout your stay, so please feel free to come in at any time with questions or to relax in the lounge. We also have a meditation room (room number 3008) open during business hours for anyone seeking a quiet place.

FSU History

The Florida State University is one of the largest and oldest of the 11 institutions of higher learning in the State University System of Florida. The Legislature of the State of Florida in a Legislative Act of January 24, 1851, provided for the establishment of the two institutions of learning, their first purpose to be "the instruction of persons, both male and female, in the art of teaching all the various branches that pertain to a good common school education; and next to give instruction in the mechanic arts, in husbandry, in agricultural chemistry, in the fundamental laws, and in what regards the rights and duties of citizens."

The Florida State University has added to its academic organization and presently is composed of 15 independent colleges. It has expanded from the original few acres and buildings to 542 buildings on 1,550 acres, including the downtown Tallahassee main campus of 451.6 acres, a farm which for many decades supplied the Florida State College for Women with food, the Seminole

Reservation — a recreational facility, the Marine Laboratory on the Gulf Coast, the Florida A&M University-Florida State University College of Engineering facility, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and Division of Research at Florida State’s Southwest Campus, and the branch campus in Panama City, Fla. The University has over 50 years of experience in international education and is a nationally recognized leader in the field of study-abroad programs, with permanent study centers in London, Florence, Valencia and Panama.

Student Housing

The mission of University Housing is to create a community atmosphere that encourages academic and personal achievement of students. We support this mission by taking pride in the appearance and condition of our facilities. Our goal, and promise to you, is to maintain an environment that makes a good first impression, which places a value on comfortable and usable spaces, and is conducive to studying.

Overall about 85% of first time FSU college students live in residence halls. In addition over 20% of all undergraduates live in student housing. Facilities at Florida State include 17 residence halls on campus. About 6,200 undergraduates live in a majority of the residence halls. The residence hall community at Florida State University is an integral part of the student’s total university experience. University Housing is committed to providing a comfortable environment that promotes and supports the educational mission of the University. Great effort is undertaken to provide students with a variety of alternatives and choices.

Residence: Smith and Kellum Halls

Page 15: Bb jamaica orientation booklet 2013 2014

Smith and Kellum Halls are 10 floor community style residence halls, arranged in the traditional corridor style. Students on each floor share a community bathroom that contains several shower stalls, toilets, sinks, etc. Community bathrooms are cleaned by housing custodial staff. The rooms are equipped with built-in beds, shelves and dressers, desks with chairs, sink and mirror, and small refrigerator. Rooms are hard wired with direct computer connections.

Page 16: Bb jamaica orientation booklet 2013 2014

Dining For the complete college experience, most breakfasts and dinners will be eaten in the dining halls. You will eat several of your meals at The Fresh Food Company which is located on the west side of campus near your residence hall. Fresh Food's most unique feature is the lack of kitchen behind closed doors. Everything is prepared and cooked before your eyes - emphasizing freshness.

Another on-campus dining hall is the Suwannee Room, which was originally used to serve the Florida State College of Women. Seminole Dining has renovated this one-of-a-kind historical site to once again serve the students, and bring quality food and convenience to the east side of campus. There are many different food stations, and food is served buffet style; you may eat as much as you wish. You will also be able to drink as much as you would like, with many options available.

Florida State Athletics

Football

The Florida State Seminoles football team is a college football program that competes in NCAA Division I-FBS and the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Florida State has won two national championships (1993 and 1999) and finished in the top five of the AP Poll for 14 straight years from 1987 through 2000. Florida State has produced two Heisman Trophy winners: quarterback Charlie Ward in 1993 and quarterback Chris Weinke in 2000. The current head coach of the team is Jimbo Fisher. Longtime Head Coach Bobby Bowden was forced into retirement prior to the Gator bowl, and Jimbo Fisher took over the program after the Seminoles upset the West Virginia Mountaineers in the 2010 Gator Bowl. The team plays its home games at Doak Campbell Stadium, located on-campus at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida.

The Florida State College actually played football during the 1902 -1904 school years and played it well. The first game in 1902 was a 5 – 0 win over South Georgia Military on November 21st when touchdowns were worth five points. The NCAA nor the governing body at the time

Page 18: Bb jamaica orientation booklet 2013 2014

recognized the games for FSC, although the school won the state championship in 1904. The school then became the Florida State College for Women and would remain one of the top all-female institutions until the large number of returning veterans from World War II triggered the state system to open Florida State University to men in 1946. The school resumed football in 1947, taking on Stetson in its final game.

Basketball

Most college basketball programs have been around for over a century which makes Florida State’s 63 year old basketball program relatively young. But Seminole basketball is young in years only. Over the past 62 seasons Florida State has matched and surpassed many of its brethren in performance on and off the court.

The Seminoles earned their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1968 and have been to the NCAA Tournament 11 times including 2009 when Florida State traveled to play in Boise, Idaho in the NCAA East Regional. Seminole basketball has fought their way into the 1972 National Championship game, the Elite Eight in 1993, and the Sweet Sixteen in 1992.

Baseball

With 2,479 wins, 19 College World Series appearances, three National Championship games, 47 NCAA Tournaments, four Golden Spikes award winners and 18 first round draft picks, Florida State University has become one of the NCAA premier baseball schools.

Since its inception in 1948, Florida State has the second highest winning percentage in Division I baseball history. The Seminoles are just one of two programs in the NCAA Division I history to have won more than 73 percent of their games all-time and only one of three teams to have won more than 70 percent. Fourteen FSU players have

Page 19: Bb jamaica orientation booklet 2013 2014

worn the red, white, and blue uniforms representing the U.S.A. in baseball in the Olympic Games since 1976.

Other Sports

FSU also offers other college team sports including cross country, golf, swimming & diving, track & field, and tennis, along with women’s teams including basketball, soccer, cross country, golf, softball, swimming & diving, track & field, tennis, and volleyball. FSU offers many additional intramural sports for any FSU students wishing to participate.

Florida State & the Seminole Tribe of FloridaFlorida State University and the Seminole Tribe of Florida enjoy a positive relationship, and the tribe has granted the university permission to use Seminole symbols and imagery. In fact, the women of the Seminole tribe design and produce the regalia worn by Osceola on game day each year.

TraditionsOne of the most nationally-recognized traditions in college football in the United States belongs to Florida State University. Before kickoff (the start of the game), Chief Osceola and his horse, Renegade, ride onto the field and plant a flaming spear in the center to officially begin the game. Osceola and Renegade made their first

appearance on September 16, 1978, and have since become an integral part of football culture at FSU. Students can take pictures with the iconic symbol before and during the game.

Another FSU football tradition is the Seminole War Chant, a cheer accompanied by an arm motion intended to symbolize a tomahawk swinging down. It is affectionately called the “Tomahawk Chop.” Visitors can witness these and many other FSU football traditions Friday evening before every home game at Downtown GetDown, a city-wide pep rally.

Leach CenterThe Leach Student Recreation Center contains a full working gym for FSU students and faculty to enjoy. It also has six racquetball and squash courts and three indoor basketball courts for recreational matches. The indoor track on the third floor allows students to exercise even during the rain. A 25-lane indoor pool is located inside the Leach Center with a spa area including two whirl pools, two steam rooms and a sauna. The Leach Center is open Monday through Thursday from 6:15 am until Midnight, Friday from 6:15 am until 10:00 pm, Saturday from 11:00 am until 9:00 pm and Sunday from 11:00 am until Midnight.

FSU Reservation

The Florida State University Reservation is a 73-acre facility, with 10 active acres, located on beautiful Lake Bradford. The "Rez" is located 1/4 mile from the airport and four miles from the Florida State campus. In our unique natural setting you can enjoy canoeing, kayaking, picnicking, swimming and many other activities. Hours: Monday-Thursday from 2pm—6pm, Friday-Sunday12pm—6pm.

The FSU Reservation was founded in 1920 by Mrs. S. L. Cawthon, the social director of Florida State College for Women. Its original name, Camp Flastacowo, was derived from the first few letters of the words Florida State College for Women. When the Florida State College for Women became Florida State University a new name was needed. After a campus wide name search in 1954, Camp Flastacowo changed its name to The Reservation. Through the years the "Rez" has continued to grow. Visitors include students, faculty and staff, and the local community.

What we will be doing at the Rez……

What is the FSU Challenge?

The FSU Challenge consists of group initiatives and a low & high challenge course, with climbing wall, which brings your group face-to-face with a series of problem solving activities. Your group may need to cross a quixotic canyon, scale a palace wall, or negotiate your group through a gigantic spider's web. No special physical skills are needed to participate because the real challenge lies in communicating with fellow participants to figure out a solution and then actively solve the problem. This year, we will be participating in the “New Team, One Dream” challenge. It is a low-challenge, 4-hour course designed to help team members build relationships with one another.

Crenshaw Lanes

Crenshaw Lanes, a twelve lane bowling center located in the Oglesby Union on the campus of Florida State University has been an FSU tradition since 1964. Along with bowling, Crenshaw offers ten full sized billiards tables. The Locker

Page 24: Bb jamaica orientation booklet 2013 2014

Room, located next to Crenshaw Lanes is a lounge area with tables, chairs and televisions. The Locker Room is also the home to Campus Link, providing internet access and information to students and campus visitors.

Programs include a number of bowling leagues, billiards tournaments, intramurals, parties, cosmic bowling, late night programming and open bowling. Crenshaw Lanes is a popular party spot for student and university groups.

Crenshaw Lanes also serves as home to the FSU Bowling Team. The bowling team represents FSU in

intercollegiate bowling competition and has established itself as one of the elite programs in the country.

Crenshaw Lanes exists to serve the social and recreational needs of the students of FSU and the FSU community. We are also open to the public when not being used by FSU students.

Club Downunder

Union Productions is a student run programming board, with 20 student employees and 20-30 other active volunteers assisting throughout the year. All aspects of the organization are run by students, including event booking, graphic and web design, hospitality, event staffing and management, production, and everything else you can possibly imagine.

Page 25: Bb jamaica orientation booklet 2013 2014

Club Downunder is part of Union Productions and hosts a variety of concerts and events in the student union. Most events are free to attend with your FSU ID.

FSU's Student Life Cinema program is located in the heart of campus in the Askew Student Life Center. The SLC film program features movies up to six nights a week. The Film Committee brings every type of movie to the university community, with titles that range from Hollywood blockbusters to foreign, independent, and documentary favorites.

Center for Leadership and Social ChangeThe Mission: “The Center enhances the education of students for responsible citizenship and effective leadership.”

The Vision: “Students and alumni are responsible citizens and effective leaders. They are aware of and engaged in the world around them and use their talents and means to create a more just and humane society. Students and alumni are well-known and respected for their leadership acumen and public service tradition. They readily seek and accept opportunities for leadership; partake actively in professional, civic, and community organizations; offer themselves for positions of trust and public service; and strive to make positive changes in their professions and communities.”

Center for Leadership and Social Change, established in 2007: “The individual values and visions of the LEAD Center and the Center for Leadership and

Page 26: Bb jamaica orientation booklet 2013 2014

Social Change are complementary, following a trend in higher education to better incorporate leadership and service into the campus community. Their shared mission in preparing students for success after graduation allows for the opportunity to combine efforts for a stronger and more cohesive department.”

Leadership is an inclusive, ethical, change process that moves a group of individuals toward a shared vision. Leadership is an active behavior, not a passive role based on a title or position within a group.

Undergraduate Certificate in Leadership Studies

The Undergraduate Certificate in Leadership Studies is an 18 credit, interdisciplinary, multidimensional, and experiential program open to all Florida State Undergraduate students. The Certificate program prepares students for leadership in multiple contexts and uses practical experience and service-learning projects to frame leadership learning within the context of social change. Upon completion, the Leadership Certificate appears on students’ academic transcript.

During your visit to FSU, you will be attending one of the courses required to obtain the Certificate in Leadership Studies. The class is called Leadership Theory and Practice, and it is “designed to introduce students to leadership theory and help them come to understand their unique role in leadership on campus, in their academic discipline, and within our larger society.”

The Capitol Buildings

As the capitol city of the state of Florida, downtown Tallahassee is home of the Florida capitol building. Both the “Old” capitol building, originally built in 1845 and the “New” capitol building stand next to each other. Also near the capitol building are the

Museum of Florida History and the Florida Supreme Court.

Tallahassee’s proud heritage. At the New Capitol, visitors get a glimpse of government in action and a panoramic view of the city from the 22nd floor observatory. In the shade of giant live oaks, the Old Capitol proudly stands restored to its 1902 appearance with candy-striped awnings, stained glass dome, and historic displays.

The first Christmas celebrated in the United States was in Tallahassee at the encampment of Spanish Explorer Hernando de Soto in 1539.

Lights, Camera, Action … Early "Tarzan" movies featuring Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O’Sullivan, were filmed at nearby Wakulla Springs. "Creature from the Black Lagoon" and "Airport 77" was also filmed there.

George Washington’s great grandniece, Catharine Daingerfield-Willis-Gray, and Napoleon Bonaparte’s nephew, Prince Achille Murat, provided the social event of the season when they were married in Tallahassee in 1826. The plantation home of widowed Princess Murat is on exhibit at the Tallahassee Museum.

As Florida was first settled by the Spanish, Mission San Luis is the original site of a Spanish Mission in Tallahassee where a group of Apalachee Indians lived and worked with Spanish settlers.

Wakulla Springs State ParkWakulla Springs State Park hosts one of the world's largest and deepest freshwater springs.  The springs form the headwaters of the Wakulla River.  The river runs through old-growth cypress swamp with abundant wildlife.  Nature trails in the upland portion of the park traverse approximately 3,000 acres of pristine forest.

There are over 180 species of birds. Here is the perfect place to study and photograph limpkin, purple gallinule, anhinga, osprey and over 180 other species of birds. Waterfowl and warblers traveling the Atlantic flyway are numerous during the winter months.

Guided riverboat tours are offered daily to provide a view of how unspoiled, natural Florida may have appeared. Alligators and turtles bask in the sun at arms length, while birds feed on the native vegetation.  Glass-bottom boat tours offer the visitor a unique opportunity to observe the underwater habitat.

Wakulla Springs Lodge, built in 1937, is a vision of quiet elegance, placed gently on the banks of Wakulla Springs.  While many improvements have been made to this historic structure for the purpose of safety, it's structural integrity remains the same today as it did sixty years ago.

The Wakulla River, originating at Wakulla Springs flows south for about ten miles before it joins the St. Mark's River.   The crystal clear waters of the Wakulla River make it a popular place for canoeing and kayaking.

Picnic areas including tables and grills are provided within the park. Nature trails located along the park

drive provide convenient access to the many plant communities found in the park. A six-mile hiking trail is provided through the use of park service roads. Swimming is allowed only within the designated swimming area near the spring. An observation and diving platform at the spring head allows a splendid view of the spring. A variety of educational and interpretive ranger-led programs are offered throughout the year.
