Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

Winding its way through more countries than any other river in Europe, the Danube has witnessed centuries of changing cultures, from ancient Romans to Ottomans, and Germanic tribes to Slavs. During an elegant, week-long cruise along this waterway, we will discover the rich legacy of these cultures and the picturesque cities of Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania. Join me next June, as we board the new ship AmaMagna, which sailed its maiden voyage in May 2019. Relax in its spacious suites with balconies, and enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime experience of cruising through the Iron Gates, where the Danube narrows and winds through awe-inspiring, cliff-lined gorges. Along this legendary river that once formed the Roman Empire’s northern border, exquisite museums, historic synagogues, ancient churches, and medieval fortresses soar above lush landscapes. After an overnight stay in Budapest, we will embark AmaMagna and stop at the historic towns of Mohács and Pécs in Hungary, Vukovar in Croatia, and Novi Sad, nicknamed the “Serbian Athens” for its cultural import. The lively and often overlooked Serbian capital of Belgrade awaits, with its sumptuous Royal Palace. After sailing through the Iron Gates, we’ll call at Vidin, Bulgaria, and later venture to that nation’s former capital of Veliko Tarnovo, where the Tsarevets Fortress towers formidably over the hills. Travelers will have the option to explore Bucharest, Romania’s “Little Paris,” before concluding in Giurgiu. In my nearly 15 years as a Travel with The Met lecturer, I have led tours of the Netherlands, Mexico, Russia, and beyond. But I’m particularly excited about the variety of stunning vistas, magnificent collections of art, and landmarks that we will see on this memorable river journey. I hope that you will join me.

Sincerely,Nadine M. OrensteinDrue Heinz Curator in Charge, Department of Drawings and PrintsThe Metropolitan Museum of Art
