NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH: LEARN TO EAT HEALTHIER!LEARN TO EAT HEALTHIER! By Morgan Casey, Elementary Program Specialist March not only springs us into longer days and warmer weather, but it spurs us to keep up with those “healthy eating” New Year Resolutions we all forgot about. Get back on track by forming a personal nutrition plan on www.choosemyplate.gov and learning just how many calories you need each day. Until your new plan is started, here are some simple tips for eating to a healthier you! Switch to Liquid Fats for Cooking Vegetable oils such as canola, corn, olive, peanut and soybean are better than solid fats such as margarine and butter. Olive oil is also high in unsaturated fats, which help lower cholesterol! Snack Smart Fruits, vegetables, and unsalted nuts make better snacks than the pre-packaged sugar and junk food in the checkout lanes. Keep healthy snacks on hand to avoid getting hungry and over-eating later.

Fill the Wholes in Your Grains Choose 100% whole grain breads and cereals, brown or wild rice, and whole grain pasta. Make at least half your grain servings whole grains, which are higher in protein, fiber, and iron than refined grain products. For children, healthy eating is necessary for optimal growth and development. Healthy eating helps reduce a child’s risk of developing heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes later in life. You can make eating healthy a priority and a fun activity for you and your Little! Find a kid-friendly cooking class, or try making a healthy recipe in your own kitchen! If your Little is a picky eater, try an “undercover” dish like Mock-a-roni and Cheese, or add Greek yogurt or a can of pumpkin puree to your batch of cookies, brownies, or sweet bread instead of eggs, butter, and oil. Try this sneaky treat below, you won’t even know it’s healthy!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Hummus

Ingredients:

1 can drained chickpeas

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/4 cup peanut or almond butter (or substitute 3 tablespoons of oil)

2/3 cup brown sugar

1/3 cup mini chocolate chips

Add all ingredients to a food processor or blender and blend until smooth.

CRAFT ACTIVITY: POT O’GOLD PAPER PLATECRAFT ACTIVITY: POT O’GOLD PAPER PLATE

Paper Plate

Printable

You only need a few materials for this pot of gold craft. It's super easy to make in time for St. Patrick's Day. Materials: Paper Plate, black paint, markers (one for each color of the rainbow), cut outs from stencil, gold and green glitter paper (or color it yourself), glue, scissors, paintbrush, pencil Cut your paper plate as shown below. Trace your gold pieces onto gold glitter paper and your shamrock onto the green glitter paper and cut them out. Of course you can color the pieces yourself if you don't have colored paper. Using your markers (or paint, or crayons) color a rainbow on the top half of your paper plate as shown below. Paint the bottom half black (or use markers/crayons). Let it dry.

Once the paint is dry, use glue to glue on your gold pieces and the shamrock. Glue the long gold piece to the back of the plate so it gives the appearance that it is inside the pot.

Glue three gold coins on each side of the rainbow. Add the shamrock to the pot.

Big Brothers Big Sisters would like to thank these matches for representing BBBS and youth mentoring in a very impressive

way. January was National Mentoring Month and each match attended a City

Council meeting where they were presented with a city proclamation

honoring mentoring. The Bigs and Littles spoke briefly, accepted the award and

learned about civics and leadership. For more details and each match story,

go to www.bbbsmv.org.

We are so proud of Little Sister, Diamond! Her story was featured in the Winter edition of the Girls Love Magazine. Check it out! Shine Like Diamond. I am the girl that sat alone and soundless in the corner, and then I met Chris Britton at Youth Hope. He is the Youth Director and he introduced me to poetry. He said his inspiration started with rap, but later he realized that poetry was so much more. He has been writing and sharing his poetry through spoken word for the past five years. When I asked him what motivates him to keep going, he said “basically life in general.” He described poetry as a way for him to interact with life around him. He said he was motivated by life experience. I wondered if poetry was easy for him or if he ever struggled with what to write or say. Silence had been the sound track to my life. I hid in the background, head down with nothing to say, shy and quiet, because it was the place I felt most comfortable. He told me poetry could be more than an outline. Poetry allowed him to wrestle with the things on his heart. It allowed him to share his story, feelings, and fears.

Britton said writing a poem is much easier than performing because when you perform, you have to embody your poem. Britton’s advice

to a beginner was simple and straight forward, “Don’t be afraid to share your story because there will always be people who will relate to it.” There was a time I was afraid to tell my story because my name was spit on by my peers. It didn’t matter how far away I got from my enemies, they were always there, lurking behind me like shadows, calling me names like “dirty Diamond”. They would even laugh and ask me what soap I used. Sometimes when they would walk past, they would grab my hair and jerk it. They picked at me like crows at a dead animal lying in the street. I thank God I never thought about killing myself, instead I got more open and embraced myself. My life is more valuable than what a few people think

of me and I am going to be heard. I have learned that if you have friends and family for support you can tear down the walls that keep you in your corner.

We have tons of great news to share this month! IN THE COMMUNITY During the week of 18 January, the Monmouth and Macomb communities celebrated the great work our volunteers do! Big Sister Jane and Little Sister Lexi accepted a proclamation from Mayor Davies of Monmouth on behalf of our program. Big Sister Meghan and Little Brother Daveion accepted a proclamation from Mayor Inman of Macomb on behalf of our program. Many thanks to both the City of Monmouth and City of Macomb for their support!! MATCH ACTIVITIES At the end of January, a large number of our

matches came together to enjoy our first match activity of the year. We watched an extremely close WIU Men’s Basketball game, and saw the WIU Leathernecks beat the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Jaguars 63-59. Some of our Littles were able to meet the team’s mascot (Sir Colonel Rock III) and members of the WIU Veterans Club, who always go all out to support their fellow Leathernecks!

UNITED WAY’S IMAGINATION BALL In early February the United Way hosted their Annu-al Imagination Ball, and man did one of our matches have a great time! Little Sister Julie and Big Sister Sammie attended the Wild West themed event and enjoyed a day of reading stories, coloring, playing games and more! Big thanks to the United Way for inviting us to their fun event! ALPHA PHI ALPHA On 6 February, Alpha Phi Alpha held their Illinois District Annual Conference at WIU. The Alphas recognized BBBS for the good work that all of our people do with a luncheon on Friday (Big Brothers Anthony, Eric, and Eric and Little Brothers Tavahreon, Devonte, and Malik were at the luncheon), and an award presentation at the banquet dinner on Saturday. Many thanks to the Alphas for be-

ing so friendly and supportive!

NEW MATCHES In February we made 2 brand new matches! We are very proud to in-troduce Little Sister Julianna and Big Sister Vanessa and Little Sister Genesis and Big Sister Ashley. Nothing beats making matches, and we see great things in the future for these two. Welcome to TEAM BBBS! NRHH and BBBS For our second match activity of the year BBBS joined student members of the National Residence Hall Honorary (pictured) to play all sorts of fun games. The students and matches also drew pictures, ate snacks, and just had some good old fashion FUN! The matches who were able to attend had a great time, and we were happy to work with a great group of students.

MATCH ANNIVERSARIES A few of our matches reached their 1-year anniversary in February. CONGRATULATIONS to them all, and we salute those volunteers for serving the community in the most rewarding of ways! Little Sister Kacie and Big Sister Pat sent us a photo.

AWARDS Little Brother Quinton received an award for being an all-around great kid! "You make Edison a better school" is what it says. We couldn't agree more. Well done, Quinton!

2015 HAVlife GRANT RENEWED! We are so excited to announce that the HAVlife Foundation has renewed a grant to Big Brothers Big Sisters in the amount of $7,500! This means we can help many more Littles gain new experiences in the areas of art, athletics, and music. To learn more about getting your Little involved, contact Jaime at [email protected].

Dear Big, I have great news for you, yes you can attend your Little’s sporting events at their school! We would encourage you to support your Little in any way that you can. Just remember you can attend events at your Little’s school but you cannot take them off of school property or meet them off school property. We are beginning the process of transitioning all of our School-Based matches to the School-Based Plus

program which will then give you the opportunity to also attend BBBS sponsored match activities with your Little. Contact your Match Coach to get that process started! Your Little will love seeing you cheering for them from the stands. This is a great way to support your Little in activities that they like doing. Have fun at the game! Sincerely,

Name: Jen Ivy Position: Volunteer Enrollment Specialist and AmeriCorps member How long have you been working for BBBS? I have been working for BBBS since September 2014. What do you most enjoy about being with BBBS? Big Brothers Big Sisters is an incredible organization that has a huge impact on the Quad Cities. Knowing that what I do every day helps provide children with mentors is such a rewarding experience. It has been great getting to know all of our Bigs, Littles, and others who have helped support our program. I am proud to be a part of an organization that truly makes a difference. What do you like to do when you’re not working? My favorite hobby is traveling! So far, I have been to three continents and plan to travel to South America this fall. In my spare time at home, I enjoy reading books, going to the gym, playing piano, and spending time with my family and friends. What advice would you give a child who is in our program? Always, always be open to new experiences. You never know when you will discover a hobby you love, try a new food you like, meet a new friend, or find a passion that could eventually turn into a career. Don’t miss what’s going on around you because it might be something really, really cool.
