Proms At … The Proms takes four Saturday matinees to further venues around London: The Chapel, Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich; Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Shakespeare’s Globe; Roundhouse, Camden; Bold Tendencies Multi-Storey Car Park, Peckham

The Proms puts the spotlight on the cello with 10 concertos ranging from Elgar’s Cello Concerto performed by Sol Gabetta on the First Night to the world premiere of Huw Watkins’s Cello Concerto performed by his brother, Paul Watkins

The Proms marks 400 years since the death of Shakespeare with a broad survey of music inspired by the Bard from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet to extracts from Kiss Me, Kate

SHAKESPEARE 400Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet overture launches the Proms’ celebrations marking 400 years since the death of Shakespeare. Music inspired by the Bard, including orchestral works by Berlioz, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky and less familiar pieces by Hans Abrahamsen and Jonathan Dove via Kiss Me, Kate and West Side Story, feature throughout the season.

The free Proms Extra Lates events offer the chance to hear emerging world, jazz and folk musicians perform in the Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room, alongside upcoming poets selected in collaboration with the Poetry Society.

The Proms Poetry Competition returns this year with entries in two categories (ages 12–18 and over-19). Winners are announced at the Proms Extra event on 8 September.

Free activities for families to participate in through-out the season including pre-concert family workshops and Proms Family Orchestra and Chorus.

The BBC Proms Inspire scheme returns to offer a platform to young composers aged between 12 and 18 years old across the UK. Past winner Tom Harrold’s BBC commission Raze will receive its world premiere at this year’s Last Night of the Proms performed by the BBC Proms Youth Ensemble and members and the BBC SO.

BBC Proms Sessions for young composers are held during the festival with some of the leading composers featured in this year’s season, and young musicians have the chance to work with cellist Guy Johnston, jazz singer-songwriter Jamie Cullum and DJ Mr Switch.

LATE NIGHTSThis year’s eclectic Late Night Proms series ranges from Bach to Bowie and Brazilian dance rhythms to Gospel sounds.

Gospel, 19 July A selection of handpicked singers from

leading gospel groups come together in a celebration of traditional gospel classics and arrangements, alongside original material.

David Bowie, 29 July A celebration and reinterpretation of

Boulez, 2 September The Ensemble Intercontemporain

commemorates its founder – the late Pierre Boulez – with a programme of pieces he conducted during more than 40 years of appearances at the Proms. Joined by conductor Baldur Brönnimann and the BBC Singers, it performs two Boulez works alongside Bartók’s earthy Village Scenes and Elliott Carter’s Penthode – written for the ensemble.

Brazilian Popular Music, 24 August The string players of the São Paulo

Symphony Orchestra and their Principal Conductor Marin Alsop are joined by members of the São Paulo Jazz Symphony Orchestra for a celebration of Brazilian popular music from the past 100 years.

Kamasi Washington, 30 August California-based saxophonist and

composer Kamasi Washington brings his own band, combining with the strings of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra along with choral backing, to perform tracks from his groundbreaking recent three-disc album The Epic.

LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMSSakari Oramo leads the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Singers and BBC Symphony Chorus plus the BBC Proms Youth Ensemble in the world-famous finale of the festival on Saturday 10 September.

PROMS IN THE PARKThe Last Night celebrations spill out from the Royal Albert Hall into all four nations of the UK on Saturday 10 September.

Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez makes his first appearance at the Proms since 2006. 16 young singers take to the stage to perform Vaughan Williams’s Serenade to Music.

Opening with the world premiere of past BBC Proms Inspire winner Tom Harrold’s BBC commission Raze, the night’s festivities feature the music of Butterworth, Borodin, Rossini, Donizetti, Offenbach, Britten, Jonathan Dove and Vaughan Williams before closing with the traditional Last Night pieces, this year marking 100 years since the composition of Parry’s Jerusalem.

Celebrations in Hyde Park, London will feature a host of musical stars, including the BBC Concert Orchestra with conductor Richard Balcombe, special guest Juan Diego Flórez, who will also appear across the road at the Royal Albert Hall.

In Northern Ireland, the Ulster Orchestra returns for a night of music-making at the Titanic Slipways, Belfast.

In Scotland, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra takes the magic of the Last Night to Glasgow Green, for a glorious night of music on the banks of the Clyde. In Wales, Proms in the Park promises to be an evening of spectacular music and celebration, led by the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales.

Highlights of the Last Night of the Proms celebrations around the UK will be included as part of the coverage on BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 3. All four events can also be watched live at bbc.co.uk/proms and via the red button.
