Today across the world Christian congregations join together to celebrate and give thanks to God, for the mission and ministry of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther, who led the Reformation (1517 – 1685) that opened the door for the beginning of the Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Episcopalian and other Christian denominations. The Reformation, led by Martin Luther (and others) discovered the freedom and truth of the gospel that we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone…our salvation is a gift of God, not earned by any merit on our part. To God be the glory!

CHURCH MOTTO “Justified for Sanctification that Matters!”

VISION FOR MISSION AND MINISTRYAs servants of the Almighty God who have been justified by Jesus, we will as instruments of grace actively pursue our sanctification to give transformation and renewal to the community. Together with the total community we will grow in love and service to God and one another.

PREPARING FOR THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION

The congregation of St. Paul Lutheran Church welcomes to Holy Communion, the Lord’s Table, those baptized Christians who: Know Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior (John 20:31); Recognize that the Body and Blood of Jesus are truly present in the bread and wine (Matthew 26:26, 1st Corinthians 11:29); Are able to examine themselves and repent of their sins (1st Corinthians 11:27-29); and desire and look to God’s Holy Spirit for help in living the Christian life (1st Corinthians 1:10).  Any person not receiving Communion may come to the altar during distribution of the sacrament for a blessing.

1) Distribution is via continuous line, as directed by the ushers.  Please come forward using the center aisle, kneel at the altar and return to your seat using the outer aisle.

2) Non-alcoholic fruit of the vine, is available along with the regular communion wine.  The grape juice is located in the center circle of the serving tray and is lighter in color.  Both are served by individual cups.

3) Communion may be brought to those with limited mobility.  Please alert the ushers if you wish to commune at your seat.

Welcome to Saint Paul Reformation Sunday

10:50 Praise Music GatheringPraise Choir and Missionary Ben Tino

Let us prepare our hearts and minds to receive God in our worship through unified voices uplifted in songs of praise!

Oh, the GloryOh the glory of his presence. We your temple give you reverence. Come and rise from your rest and be blessed by our praise, as we glory in your embrace. As your presence now fills this place (repeat)

Bless the LordBless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless his holy name. (2x). He has done great things, he has done great things, he has done great things; bless his holy name!Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

Welcome Missionary Benjamin Tino Serving the Lord in Guatemala!

The missionary “seed” was rooted in me at a very early age, as I was born and raised as an MK (missionary kid) in Venezuela.  It is there that I learned to love and appreciate the Hispanic culture and lifestyle.  Moving to South Florida in 2001, I was engulfed by diversity during my grade school years and always enjoyed the rich cultural mixture found in South Florida.  With my mother being the music director at our church, music was bound to find me. In the fifth grade I was given my first trumpet lesson and from there on I developed my love for music and took it upon myself to learn a variety of instruments.  Going into high school I continued to study trumpet, classical guitar, and bass guitar, and would play any of those three on any given Sunday.

During my college years at Jacksonville University, I decided to study music and received my degree in Music Education in 2017. Upon completion of my degree I was unsure of what I would do after college, but I knew it would be something in music, and I wanted to work overseas.   It wasn’t until 2016 that I realized the plan God had for me: To serve Him by bringing music into churches.  Now, one year later, I have accepted the call to be the music director at El Divino Salvador Lutheran Church in Zacapa, Guatemala. I realized God has been preparing me for this opportunity my entire life, and everything I have done has been part of my training.

Ms. Regina Ford, Organist Devin Terry, Acolyte

On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted 95 Theses (propositions) on the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church as an invitation to debate the sale of indulgences for forgiveness. That event sparked a reform movement that eventually led to a Lutheran church and separate denominations. Luther called the Church back to the good news of salvation by grace alone through faith alone.

Luther believed the Word of God was the supreme authority for the Christian faith, rather than tradition or papal decrees. In the process of bringing the Scriptures to the common person, Luther translated the Bible into German, published numerous books and sermons of biblical teachings, and composed numerous hymns based on biblical themes. Many of his hymns are still sung today.

The Call to Worship[Today’s Call to Worship interweaves Martin Luther’s great Reformation hymn –“A Mighty

Fortress” with the words from Scripture that inspired it, the words of Psalm 46.]

Deaconess: Grace, mercy, and peace to you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen and Amen.

Deaconess: God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

People: Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.

All Sing:A mighty fortress is our God, a sword and shield victorious; He breaks the cruel oppressor’s rod. And wins salvation glorious. The old satanic foe has sworn to work us woe! With craft and dreadful might, He arms himself to fight. On earth he has no equal.

Deaconess: There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.

People: God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns.

All Sing:No strength of ours can match his might! We would be lost, rejected. But now a champion comes to fight. Whom God himself elected. You ask who this may be? The Lord of hosts is he! Christ Jesus, mighty Lord. God’s only Son, adored. He holds the field victorious.

Deaconess: The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; God speaks and the earth melts.

People: The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Deaconess: Come, behold the works of the Lord!

People: God makes wars cease to the end of the earth; God breaks the bow, shatters the spear, and burns the shields with fire.

All Sing:Though hordes of devils fill the land, All threat’ning to devour us; we tremble not, unmoved we stand; They cannot over-pow’r us. Let this world’s tyrant rage; In battle we’ll engage! His might is doomed to fail; God’s judgement must prevail! One little word subdues him.

Deaconess: Be still, and know that the Lord is God!

People: God is exalted among the nations; God is exalted in the earth.

Deaconess: The Lord of hosts is with us;

People: The God of Jacob is our refuge.

All Sing:God’s Word forever shall abide, No thanks to foes who fear it; For God himself fights by our side, With weapons of the Spirit. Were they to take our house, Goods honor, child, or spouse. Though life be wrenched away, They cannot win the day. The Kingdom’s ours forever!

The Confession and Absolution Deaconess Loretta Wiggins

Deaconess: Let us now confess the sins and burdens of our hearts to the Lord as we seek His forgiveness.

ALL: We acknowledge that we are sinners and we confess our sins – those known to us that burden our hearts, and those unknown to us but seen by you. We know that before you nothing remains hidden, and in you everything is revealed. Free us from the slavery of sin; liberate us from the bondage of guilt; work in us that which is well pleasing in your sight; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Pastor: God is merciful and gracious, granting forgiveness through Jesus Christ to all who confess their sin. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sin, in the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son and of the Holy Spirit.

ALL: Amen!

The Confession of Faith Elder Simon Moorer

Elder: We continue with the confession of our Christian faith through the Apostles’ Creed…

All: 1I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian and apostolic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

The Communion Distribution Hymns LBW #301, Come to Calvary’s Holy Mountain

Come to Calvary's holy mountain, Sinners ruined by the fall; Here a pure and healing fountain, Flows to you, to me, to all, In a full, perpetual tide, Opened when our Savior died.

Come, in sorrow and contrition, Wounded, impotent, and blind; Here the guilty free remission, Here the troubled peace may find; Health this fountain will restore, He that drinks shall thirst no more

Those that drink shall live forever; 'Tis a soul-renewing flood. God is faithful; God will never, Break his covenant in blood, Signed when our Redeemer died, Sealed when he was glorified.

TFBF #72, Down at the CrossDown at the cross where my Savior died, Down where for cleansing from sin I cried, There to my sin was the blood applied; Glory to His name! Refrain: Glory to His name, Glory to His name; There to my sin was the blood applied; Glory to His name!

I am so wondrously saved from sin, Jesus so sweetly abides within; There at the cross where He took me in; Glory to His name. [Refrain] Oh, precious fountain that saves from sin, I am so glad I have entered in; There Jesus saves me and keeps me clean; Glory to His name. [Refrain]

Come to this fountain so rich and sweet; Cast thy poor soul at the Savior’s feet; Plunge in today, and be made complete; Glory to His name. [Refrain]

TFBF #108, Come Thou FountCome, thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace; streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. While the hope of endless glory fills y heart with joy and love, teach me ever to adore thee; may I still thy goodness prove.

Here I raise my Ebenezer, hither by thy help I've come; and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God; he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood.

Oh, to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be! Let thy grace now, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee: prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; here's my heart, Oh take and seal it;seal it for thy courts above.

Your Grace and MercyYour grace and mercy brought me through. I’m living this moment because of you. I want to thank you and praise you too. Your grace and mercy brought me through.

Stewardship: One Incredible Adventure

ICARE Community Problems Assembly (CPA)Monday, October 28, 2019, 7:00 pm

Who Cares?  "I Care!" Greetings ICARE Justice Ministry Participants. This is a reminder of our important ICARE Community Problems Assembly (CPA) where we will decide which problems we will address in 2020.

The Assembly will take place on Monday, October 28, 2019, 7:00 pm at Christ the King Church, 742 Arlington Road N. Please mark your calendars now and encourage others to attend. We will provide transportation from St. Paul with a departure time of 6:00 pm. A

We will vote to address one of these problems: a. Housing & Homelessness, orb. Health & Mental Health Care, or c. Crime & Violence

In 2018 Jacksonville was the per capita murder

capital of Florida. But that barely made news, since Jacksonville has been the murder capital among large cities in Florida since 2001.

Duval County Jail is the biggest mental health provider in Northeast Florida, which means people aren’t getting treated until they’ve already been locked up.

25 percent of children under 18 live in poverty in Duval County. 30 percent of children under 5 live in poverty in Duval County.

The largest demographic living in poverty in Jacksonville are Females 25 - 34, followed by Females 35 - 44 and then Females 18 - 24.

The most common racial or ethnic group living below the poverty line in Jacksonville, FL is Black (44%), followed by White (38%) and Hispanic (9%).

11.9% of people in Jacksonville do not have health insurance. Across Florida, 77.4 % of pregnant woman receive pre-natal care in their first trimester

and 6.7 % started prenatal care late or receive no prenatal care. In Jacksonville, only 65.1% of pregnant woman receive pre-natal care in their first trimester and 11.2% started prenatal care late or receive no prenatal care.

In 2016, 18.9% adults could not afford to see a doctor. From 2016-2018, 8,858 people in Jacksonville were hospitalized for mental disorders.

1,174 of those were children under age 18. Every year, roughly 49,000 ex-offenders are released from jail or prison to live in Duval

County. According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the majority of prisoners released in Northeast Florida are concentrated in Jacksonville, particularly in the region’s low-income, minority neighborhoods where poverty, unemployment, and other risk factors work against a successful re-entry.

Fair market rent for a 2 bedroom apartment in Jacksonville is $947. Jacksonville FMR area is more expensive than 73% of the state.

Florida is 50th in the nation in what we spend on Mental Health. 1 in 5 High School students at the beaches have attempted suicide. While the United States locks up more people than any other country in the world, Florida

exceeds the national average. In other words, Florida locks up people in prison at one of the highest rate in the world.

Florida currently spends $2.3 billion a year to lock people up. A single mom with two children would have to work 88 hours at a minimum wage job to

afford an average two bedroom apartment in Duval County.

Lesson 9. “A Loving Law” was today’s study topic. Months into their wilderness wanderings, the Israelites arrive in the wilderness of Sinai. God comes to the mountain in clouds and thunder—fire and smoke—as He establishes His covenant with His people through Moses, His chosen intermediary. There on the mountain, God gives Moses His Ten Commandments. Discussion: Why the Ten Commandments are still important in our lives today.

PREPARE FOR NEXT SUNDAY – SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2019 Lesson 10. “The Land at Last” is the title for next Sunday’s lesson. For forty years, the Israelites wandered on sandals that didn’t wear out and ate daily doses of manna. Following Moses’ death, Joshua prepares to lead a new generation into the Promised Land. This time, the floodwaters of the Jordan River stand in the way; but, hearkening back to the Red Sea crossing, the people pass through on dry land as they gather twelve stones for a memorial to God’s faithful care for His people. Come prepared to discuss how God leads us today.

Breakfast is served from 8:50am to 9:30am with Sunday School Classes for all ages from 9:30am to 10:30am.

Overview: Stewardship – One Incredible Adventure! invites its readers to immerse themselves in an energetically motivated, biblically grounded, practical exploration of stewardship.
