BBG Takes Landcare Honours

It’s official. Landcare in the Blackwood River catchment is award-winning stuff.

The Blackwood Basin Group (BBG) has taken out top honours in the recent 2015 WA State Landcare Awards, along with two key landcare identities from Katanning at the upper end of the catchment.

Announced at the recent WA State Landcare Conference’s Gala Dinner in Mandurah, the BBG received the Fairfax Media Landcare Community Group Award.

The 4-year project has achieved great success so far and is pioneering new methods for wetland rehabilitation.

“Landcare is about supporting the community that looks after the land, and we are so proud of our community and their achievements which are recognised through this award.” Dr Christensen concluded.

My Inbox….

We are well and truly on the downhill run to the end of the year.

There are many, many activities and events going on around the community this month and in the lead up to Christmas (sorry, but yes, it is just around the corner).

The UBAS ‘Dinninup’ Show is set to be another fantastic event with so much to see and do. Congratulations to the committee and volunteers who work so tirelessly throughout the year to bring this event together for us all to enjoy.

It is also time to reflect on November 11 for Remembrance Day. The CRC is screening a free program ‘Black Diggers’ at 1pm on this day. See page 17 for more details.

Summer sports are underway and the pool will be open shortly!

A big thank you to my CRC staff who very capably delivered the October Gazette in my absence. I had a wonderful time in Queensland playing hockey with lots of memories made!

Until next month, stay safe and remember to Buy up in Boyup!

Cheers, Jodi

A Pink M.U.N.C.H. cancer fundraising day was held at the Boyup Brook Community Resource Centre on October 27. It involved guest speakers, a fashion parade, pamper sessions and demonstrations along with good food, nattering and catching up with friends.

With forty ladies attending, the Centre was filled to capacity. Local cancer survivor, Lizzie Twigg gave her audience a roller coaster ride as she spoke of her journey through cancer which included both laughter and tears! Victoria Coyne from Victoria’s Place in Bridgetown gave an interactive talk on ‘Taking care of You’ and included some simple exercises and meditation.

With their selection of versatile clothing Georgia Wallace with her range of clothes from Intimo and Jacqueline Zanders with her collection of BDB Basics entertained the ladies with the fashion parade and afterwards ladies took delight in checking the fashions out further including a rack from Hot Country.

The day ended with a selection of pamper sessions: Reiki by Katie Everett, Light Touch Massage by Beth Askew or a hand massage from Lisa Martin.

Funds raised on the day are being donated to the Rose Centre in Manjimup. The Rose Centre is a peaceful and supportive sanctuary offering complementary therapies, comfort, care and compassion for local people who have a palliative care diagnosis, chronic disease or life limiting illness, or are undergoing treatment for cancer, and their primary carers.

“By the lovely comments received everyone enjoyed the day immensely finding it relaxing, informative with great variety – something to suit everyone,” said CRC event organiser, Lyn Willett. “It was a fun day and we enjoyed working with the other local businesses and providing an opportunity for social interaction for our rural ladies, whilst raising funds for the Rose Centre.”

Reminder – Cat Control The Cat Act was implemented from November 2013. The new cat laws are about:

encouraging responsible pet ownership; reducing the number of unwanted cats in the community;

and reducing the number of cats euthanised each year.

Don’t allow your cat to roam. Most people are aware that cats should be brought in during the evening to reduce hunting, but it will also assist in reducing cats being involved in road accidents, catching diseases from other cats and fighting with other cats.

It is a requirement that all domestic cats, over 6 months of age, must be sterilised, microchipped and registered with your local government. To help identify owned cats, they must wear a collar and registration tag.

A person must be over 18 years of age to lawfully register a cat. The registration period is from 1 November to 31 October, with all registrations expiring on 31 October, regardless of the date your cat was originally registered.

Your cat can be registered at the Shire office in Abel Street, Boyup Brook. You will need to bring the relevant documents to receive concession, a concession card or sterilisation certificate. Should you have any further queries please contact the Shire on 97651200.

Registration Fees Sterilised: 1 Year: $20.00 3 Year: $42.50 Lifetime: $100.00

Display Features Local Products

The South West District Display at the 2015 Royal Show was again well supported by Upper Blackwood Agricultural Society however it wasn’t in the top three places this year.

It was won by Coastal (Outer Metropolitan area) by using a 19 year old lad with expertise in computer and modern technology that enabled them to win.

Innovation, interaction, Education Value along with Best representation of area and Overall Visual look.

Second was our long-time rivals Gt. Southern and third was Mid-West who always have a wonderful display of Native Flowers.

South West did win the Dairy Produce, Fruit, Vegetables and Preserves. A hat-trick for Preserves being third year in a row and it is thanks to Anne Ritson, Sue Emmerson and Betty Knapp.

It also featured a range of Fowlers Vacola jars being the 100th year of that company. Come to our Dinninup Show to see more of Fowlers Preserving system.

Boyup Brook also featured well with Olive products from Red Hill, Dinninup Grove and Grindon’s prize winning Oils of Robust - Gold Medal, Fruity - a Silver, Delicate - a Bronze and their St Saviour’s Oil also won a Bronze medal.

Local wines were included with Beulah Wines’ Gold medal Shiraz. We also had knitting from Denise Burton and smocking from Rhonda Parker.

Rhonda also organised Hardanger embroidery from Lena Battersby of Manjimup and to see more Hardanger work come to the Dinninup Show.

Plus local farmers loaned Alpaca fleeces, crop, pasters and wool.

The South West members would very much welcome some new and younger persons to help us with the Display next year.

Planned Western Power Outage

To make sure you have a safe and reliable electricity supply into the future, Western Power is making some improvements across the network.

Work to be completed: Western Power will replace four power poles in Boyup Brook. The work will be undertaken at night time to minimise disruption to the community, and where possible will be carried out with live electricity lines.

Planned Outages: Keeping the community and our crews safe throughout these works is our number one priority. Because it’s not always sake to work on live lines there will be times when we will need to interrupt the power supply.

A major planned power outage will be taking place in Thursday 5 November to change four power poles in Boyup Brook. Outage times will be between 10:00pm and 6:00am.

To help you prepare we will let you know ahead of time if your home or business will be affected by this power outage.

For more details, keep an eye out for mail from us and download the Western Power smartphone App.

Farming Equipment Movement on Roads With Harvest time upon us, I am taking the opportunity to remind local farms and contractors of some continuing issues with movement of farming equipment around Harvest and seeding times.

When you are moving agricultural machinery along the road whether it is a short or long distance you must have a rotating amber light that can be seen 500mtrs by the driver of an approaching vehicle from any direction, this does not include a vehicles flashing hazard lights.

Make sure your complying at all times not only in relation to Police but think of the Civil law suit issues.

When using licenced powered farm machinery (Tractor, Harvesters etc check the conditions of the vehicles license if you are unsure ask) remember that they are only licensed to travel on the roads during the hours of day light and not after dark, this has been happening regularly over the last few years and Police are going to crack down on those who try and push the boundaries.

If you’re wondering why they cannot be driven after dark is that the headlight do not meet the vehicle standards act, with lights being above the regulated height and can cause oncoming cars to be blinded even on a low beam, also their width.

If you do not wish to receive an infringement for the above then do not drive these vehicle after dark or without an amber light. If you are unsure ask we are more than happy to advise on what is required.

Stock Crossings and signage When moving stock from paddock to paddock and you have to cross a road you are required to display signs in either directions warning oncoming motorist of the hazard ahead.

The requirements are as per Main Roads stock being moved on roads Where it is necessary to move stock more than 100m along a road reserve, signs should be erected along the road shoulder in accordance with Figure 3. In addition, a lead vehicle and a tail vehicle should be placed in front and at the rear of the stock to warn approaching motorists. The vehicles should be located at a distance from the stock as shown in Table 2.

Note: When using the NEXT ... km sign, the value for the distance should be between 1km and 10km.

Where stock can be moved along the road reserve without stock or vehicles travelling on the carriageway, it remains necessary to adhere to the signage shown in Figure 3 (below).

St Saviour’s Anglican Church in Boyup Brook won credit for its first-class environmental efforts on Saturday when it became the first church in regional WA to earn a Five Leaf Eco-Award.

The Five Leaf Eco-Awards are a national ecumenical environmental change initiative that assists, inspires and rewards churches and religious organisations for environmental action. There are currently six awards of varying difficulty available.

Awards founder Jessica Morthorpe was in Boyup Brook to present the award and congratulate the congregation on their achievement. This award makes St Saviour’s the 23rd church in Australia, and the eighth in Western Australia, to receive a Five Leaf Eco-Award.

Ms Morthorpe introduced the program, “Founded in 2008, the Five Leaf Eco-Awards are non- competitive, with churches completing tasks from a list of flexible criteria to earn each certificate. The program is designed to encourage churches to embrace the important role they are called to play within the environmental movement.”

“Christian eco-theology and teaching on the environment make it very clear that Creation Care is a vital priority for the Church, and all around the world churches are currently embracing action by creating more environmentally friendly buildings, helping members of their congregations to change their behaviour, educating their communities on sustainability and

advocating with decision makers to give greater consideration to the poor and the environment. In Australia, our network of Five Leaf Eco-Awards churches are at the forefront of this growing church greening movement.”

“St Saviour’s Anglican Church is receiving the Five Leaf Eco-Awards Basic Certificate today as recognition for completing a range of environmental achievements as required by the criteria of the award, including conducting an energy audit, taking actions to reduce their resource use and create behaviour change, holding talks on the environment, celebrating World Environment Day, providing environmental suggestions to members of the congregation in their pew sheets, petitioning the shire to retain their recycling services, hosting the combined Boyup Brook Churches book sale to raise funds for Act for Peace’s ‘Seeds for Sustainability project’ and hosting this festival with a focus on caring for creation,” Ms Morthorpe added.

The award was presented at St Saviour’s first Spring Garden Festival, a very successful event that drew crowds to 21 stalls designed to help them care for creation, including environment, garden, recycling, and food stalls from around the region.

It was a very successful event, with many people from the church and community enjoying the shopping, food and lovely weather.

Activities will include; Aboriginal cultural experience, birdwatching tips, vegetated floating islands, photo competition, and much more.

A tasty morning tea be provided, so come along and see what we’ve been busy doing. The event will take place at Schwenke’s Dam, Greenbushes on Saturday, November 14 and run from 9am to 12pm.

“This is your chance to see and experience many of the activities that go into creating a wetland haven for waterbirds,” said Project Officer, Joby Rand.

The Waterbird Project (The Priority Bittern and Waterbird Biodiversity Enhancement Project) aims to create a functional and resilient wetland for the protection of endangered waterbirds such as the Australasian Bittern (Botaurus poiciloptilus).

The site’s mining legacy led to a steep-sided freshwater dam that is being modified to create mud-flats, reed beds, and islands which are ideal habitats for waterbirds.

Project activities also include revegetation, weed and pest control, community workshops and involvement, a cockatoo

nest-box program, and flora and fauna surveys.

The 4 year project is funded through the Australian Government’s Biodiversity Fund, Round Two, with the BBG working in partnership with Talison Lithium, and supported by the Department of Parks and Wildlife.

St Mary’s Brings Aboriginal Culture

St. Mary’s is participating in the Department of Aboriginal Affairs’ 2015 PALS Program.

PALS encourages reconciliation In 2015, 367 schools are coordinating 422 PALS projects

across WA

St. Mary’s has received PALS funding to undertake a unique reconciliation project that aims to teach our students more about our unique Aboriginal culture. PALS, an initiative of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, encourages young Western Australian school students to develop projects that promote reconciliation in their local community.

Recently, St Mary’s were fortunate to experience the Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company that was touring in this area. They engaged the students from the start, drawing them into the story, teaching the students the Noongar names of the animals and inviting participation throughout the stories. Students giggled and screamed as the story unfolded. The performers danced their way through the story, highlighting the flaws of each character and revealing a strong message.

“The Yirra Yaakin performers were a wonderful surprise for the students, performing the dreamtime stories from the Noongar culture with passion, energy and humour. The students loved it and it was an opportunity to learn about the creation stories of Noongar culture here in the South West,” said Principal Cathryn Voak.

Aboriginal Affairs Minister Peter Collier said that the PALS program provides a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn more about our unique Aboriginal culture.

“The continuing success of the PALS program demonstrates the willingness of young people to embrace reconciliation and cultural awareness.”

“The program allows non-Aboriginal students to learn more about our Aboriginal culture in an engaging way, and creates an opportunity for our Aboriginal students to be proud of their culture and history,” the Minister said.

“I congratulate all of the 367 schools involved in 2015 for their willingness to participate and for their contribution to ongoing reconciliation efforts,” the Minister said.

Future Funds for BBDHS

Philippe Kaltenrieder and Maureen Piper, from Future Boyup Brook, presented Anne Klaassen, the principal of Boyup Brook District High School, and Mary-Anne Inglis from the School Board, with a cheque to assist with the provision of synthetic turf at the ANZAC Memorial Site.

This site is truly magnificent, and we encourage all community members to attend the next ANZAC service there, or any other event that is open to the public. It is a wonderful addition to the school.

The Future Boyup Brook Fund was established as a form of self-reliance for our town and wider Shire. There is not always a government grant waiting when the need arises, and at that time, small towns have to fall back on their own resources. As people put back into their community, the town is strengthened and its future is secured.

Future Boyup Brook is a worthy recipient of regular donations from everyone in the community, so that over the years, a large capital base is grown, and the earnings can be continually distributed to projects such as this one.

We hope that this example encourages others to contribute; as they feel financially able, at retirement, or in their wills.

Medals Galore at Wine Show

On Saturday, 17 October the 2015 Blackwood Valley and WA Boutique Wine Show Awards were presented in Bridgetown.

The Blackwood Valley and WA Boutique Wine Show is limited to wine producers in Western Australia who produce up to 250 tonnes of wine grapes. This year, 272 entries were received from 52 boutique wine producers. These were judged over two days by an experienced panel of wine judges.

Chief Judge, Rod Properjohn, was impressed by both the organisation of the Wine Show and the quality of entries. High praise indeed from a man who has not only received several awards for his contribution to wine education and journalism in Western Australia, but has also had extensive experience judging wine shows during the 40 years he has been a lecturer with the Wine Education Centre of Wines of Western Australia.

The overall results were fantastic with 73% of the wines entered receiving medals," said Mr Properjohn. "Usually in Australian wine competitions about 50% of wines would be given a medal, so this is an outstanding achievement and this clearly demonstrates that boutique wineries in Western Australia are producing wines of exceptional quality.

A total of 16 wines received a gold medal (8%), 62 wines received a silver medal (22%) and 43% of the wines were given a bronze medal.

BVWIA President, Chris Shedley said "It was a great show, we had a slight increase in entries and a record number of medal winners. The judges were extremely happy with the organisation of the event and I really appreciated their valuable input throughout the show."

The Most Successful Exhibitor of the show, who won 17 medals from 18 entries, was Mandoon Estate from the Swan Valley. The Best Boutique Wine of the Show was awarded to Windance Estate from Margaret River for their 2014 Shiraz.

The local region trophies were awarded to Boyup Brook producer, Beulah Wines for the Best Blackwood Valley White Wine for their 2014 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc and Nannup Ridge Estate who won the Best Blackwood Valley Red Wine for their 2014 Shiraz, as well as the Most Successful Blackwood Valley Producer.

Medals were awarded to the following Boyup Brook producers: Beulah Wines: Silver - 2014 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Bronze - 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon

Latitude 34 Wine Company (formerly Barwick Wines): Bronze - 2014 The Blackwood Sir Henry Shiraz, 2013 Barwick, Optimus The Terraces Shiraz, 2014 Barwick, Optimus, The Terraces Cabernet, 2014 The Blackwood Tweed River Cabernet Sauvignon, 2014 The Blackwood El Toro Rojo, 2013 The Blackwood Estate Shiraz Cabernet

TG & MJ Dickinson: Bronze - 2014 Dickinson Estate Chardonnay, 2015 Tammar Gully Sauvignon Blanc and 2014 Tammar Gully Shiraz.

A full list of trophy and medal winners is available on the website: www.blackwoodvalleywine.asn.au

On Friday, 16 October, the annual Rylington Park Field Day and Men’s Day was held.

The morning’s trial walk was well attended by farmers, with specific interest in the lupin trials. Thanks to Irwin Hunter and Co, Bell Pasture Seeds for supplying pasture varieties. Thank you also to Alan Meldrum from Pulse Australia for talking about the lupins and Raj Malik from the Ag Department filling us in on the oat varieties.

CSBP’s Dan Glover spoke about liquid nitrogen on pastures and Brett Southcott from Farm Supplies filled us in on the ongoing lime trial.

After lunch, which was provided by CSBP, Graham Aird shared the story of his heart attack and brought to our attention the risk factors and prevalence of heart disease.

Veterinarian, Adrian Baker, first discussed good animal husbandry and the principles of Lifetime Ewe Management, after which he gave us a humorous and interesting view of live export of sheep and his role as a veterinarian on one of these vessels.

Jason Reid from Uni Grain spoke about the expansion of their business, oat pricing going forward and discussed some of the oat varieties.

With Sergeant Paul Williams not being able to attend, local Police Officer Daniel Simpson kindly stepped in for a question and answer session with the farmers.

The day ended around the bonfire with Blackwood Valley Beef sausages.

We would like to thank everyone for attending the day as well as our sponsors: Shire of Boyup Brook, CSBP, the Boyup Brook Co-Op, Boyup Brook Farm Supplies and Rylington Park.

Scholarships A reminder to all year 9 and 10 students from the Boyup Brook Shire who will finish their schooling at Agricultural schools to apply for the Rylington Park scholarships. Contact Erlanda on 9765 3012 or 0429 375 609 or email [email protected] for more info.

Storm in a Teacup – Women’s Day The 2016 event will be on Saturday, 19 March. For the fifth year in a row, Rylington Park and the Boyup Brook Co-Op will be hosting our annual women’s day. Thank you very much to the Co-Op board for your ongoing support for the day.

The main speaker will be chef Don Hancey, better known as the WA Food Ambassador. Don is very passionate about supporting farmers and using local produce. He will do two cooking demonstrations of which a few lucky ladies will have the opportunity to go up and have a taste.

We are also very fortunate to have two ‘almost local’ ladies to talk on the day. They are author and story writer Sarah Evans from Bridgetown and Jennifer Egerton-Warburton from Lucinda’s Everlastings in Kojonup. More on them in the next Gazette.

Rylington Update If anyone would like to add something to the goody bags we hand out to all the ladies on arriving at the field day, please contact Erlanda.

Also to book a stall in advance please phone 9765 3012 or 0429 375 609. This is only an appetiser – watch this space.

Fox Shoot 2016 The Boyup Brook annual fox shoot will be held the weekend of 5 to 7 February 2016. Please mark this date in your calendars.

Again we will be seeking farmers willing to take some city folk out shooting feral animals on your property. Thank you to the farmers who have been helping us the past few years. This way we cover more land and kill more critters.

Any prize donations are also very welcome. Erlanda Deas

Perth Scorchers bowler Brad Hogg and teammates Jason Behrendorff and Sam Whiteman are the faces of this year’s Are You Ready? bushfire campaign.

Member for Warren-Blackwood Terry Redman MLA said the awareness campaign aimed to encourage all members of the community to play a part in preparing for the summer bushfire season.

It is critical everyone, particularly those who live in bushfire prone areas, have a survival plan in place to protect themselves, their families and their property. Last season firefighters attended more than 3900 bushfires across WA. It is really important that we all contribute to reducing the risk of bushfires.

Mr Redman said State Government agencies, local governments and volunteers were doing their bit to prepare for the upcoming bushfire season.

The Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW) burned about 147,000 hectares in WA in 2014-15, which means 35 per cent of department-managed land in the South West had a fuel age of less than six years.

Additionally, $20 million of Royalties for Regions was allocated in the last State Budget to boost DPaW’s prescribed burning program over the next four years.

Western Power has been clearing vegetation away from power lines and carrying out network improvements.

Mr Redman said as the days heated up it was essential for residents and property owners to play their part in bushfire preparation for their homes and families.

We’ve seen the devastation bushfire disasters can have on our regional communities, most recently in Northcliffe and Boddington.

Everyone needs to make sure they are bushfire ready for this summer, which has already been predicted to be one of the highest risk seasons recent times.

The State Government has also announced the official opening of the $1 million Hardship Assistance Scheme. The scheme helps emergency service volunteers experiencing difficult times, through misfortune such as illness or accidental injury.

Bushfire Campaign Wildflower Watch

Did you know that photographic records of all of the orchids found in the Boyup Brook town bush blocks can be viewed at the Visitor Centre?

The files of ALL of the flowered plants provide useful information for those wanting to identify plants.

While, from the road, the bush appears to have little to see this month brings with it at least twenty two new flowers including Bush Gerberas; Jacksonia trees; three different Mulla-Mulla’s (the common pink pompom called the rose tipped variety, the narrow leaved and a tall version) and the purple Branching Fringed Lily.

Just because the season has not been suitable for an abundance of orchids doesn’t mean that there isn’t much to see.

Don’t forget your magnifying glass as many are quite small.

Garden Club Cuttings

Roses Galore, for our October Club visit to Felicity and Richard Graham’s garden near Donnybrook. Felicity talked about how the garden grew from a four hectare bare block transformed over ten years to a spectacular house and garden. With 300 heritage tea roses blooming over trellis structures, formal areas, a paved circle of Lady Hillingdons, also large tubs on the verandah of old fashioned beautiful double pink roses. As we strolled through the garden, floral perfume filled the air.

The southern boundary was planted with native tree's to provide a windbreak and privacy. The drive way is lined with London Plane, with Liquid Amber in the front garden. The boundary is also planted with Evergreen Ash, Claret Ash, Tipuana, Snow Pear, Jacaranda, Chinese Elm, Crab Apple, Bay Tree, Gingko, Golden Ash, Lipstick Maple too many to name.

We then settled into afternoon tea with delicious homemade cake's enjoyed by over 20 members and visitors at the back of the property overlooking the garden and paddocks along the Preston River. The plant raffle was won by Maria she was delighted. We thanked Felicity and Richard for showing us what can be done on a bare block with hard work, passion and determination creating this magnificent beautiful garden, which is a credit to them.

A Puppet and Mask Making Day was held during the October school holidays at the Boyup Brook Community Resource Centre in partnership with the Boyup Brook Art and Craft Club.

Children could choose from a pre-cut design or could create their own masterpieces.

Nine children attended and with guidance from crafters Mary-Anne Brlevich and Mary Connolly, and CRC Trainee, Chantay Della Vedova, all participants enjoyed themselves immensely, making puppets and masks to enter into the Dinninup Show. Some even made their o w n c r e a t i o n s , i n c l u d i n g f i n g e r puppets, paper crafts and drawings.

More than 2300 interim satellite users in O’Connor are a step closer to having access to fast, reliable broadband with the successful launch this morning of the first of nbn’s two world-class communication satellites.

Federal Member for O’Connor Rick Wilson said the launch of the Sky Muster satellite from South America today means the wait for access to the National Broadband Network is almost over for many remote communities.

“O’Connor has the largest number of people using the interim satellite so this is huge news for the electorate,” Mr Wilson said. “This Government recognises broadband access is crucial in overcoming many disadvantages faced by Australians in rural and remote areas.

“We are determined to maximise the value of these satellites by delivering content in the most innovative and efficient ways, and by prioritising uses of high social value such as distance education and e-health.”

Mr Wilson said the Australian Government is committed to providing fast broadband internet to rural and regional residents.

“The cost of each satellite connection is $7900, compared with an average cost of connecting fibre to existing homes and businesses of around $4400.

“This means rural and regional residents will have highly subsided internet access if they use the long term satellite which will benefit O’Connor’s farming and pastoral communities the most.”

nbn is investing around $2 billion on the design, construction and launch of the two satellites and for other ground-based equipment and services. Sky Muster and its sister satellite will be among the world’s most advanced communications satellites.

When operational, nbn’s satellite broadband service will cover more than 400,000 homes and businesses across Australia.

A region-by-region rollout plan is being developed to manage connections to the new service as all users will require a new external receiver dish and modem to connect to the nbn satellite service.

The transfer of ISS users to the new service will occur over a period of around 9 to 12 months.

Communications Minister Senator Mitch Fifield said nbn’s two high-capacity satellites would use the latest technology to deliver speeds of up to 25 megabits per second, the same as what is offered by fixed line ADSL2.

The second nbn satellite is scheduled for launch in early 2016 and

users will be able to connect broadband and voice services from around April next year following beam commissioning and product testing.

Households and businesses will be able to choose from a range of monthly download plans across two different speed tiers.

Locals Learn About NBN

With the launch of the Fixed Wireless NBN coverage in Boyup Brook in July, the need to provide some insight and guidance about this new technology to community members was vital.

The Boyup Brook Community Resource Centre worked with the Telstra Business Development team to bring this information to the town.

Across the two days, individuals and local business people were invited to have one-on-one consultations with the Telstra team about their specific locations and ask questions about the NBN and other telecommunications issues. There was also a general NBN information session and sundowner held for interested community members.

CRC Manager, Jodi Nield said, “It was a great opportunity for residents to efficiently obtain this information without having to travel or spend time on the phone.”

Brian Cross, Business Development Specialist said, “Our Telstra team were extremely pleased with the patronage of the community visiting our NBN Experience Vehicle over the two days. The participation and support shown by both the local council and CRC members to ensure their community are kept well informed and up to date with the latest technology in their community is a credit to all involved. Thank you Boyup Brook for your hospitality.”

Editors note: Telstra is not the only NBN provider. Please contact your current internet service provider, or visit www.nbnco.com.au for more information.

Trans-Pacific Partnership

WAFarmers welcomes the completion of negotiations under the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TTP) which will improve market opportunities for a range of agricultural commodities produced by farmers in Western Australia.

The agreement between twelve countries was reached in early October and is expected to drive sustainable growth, promote innovation, enhance job opportunities and reduce trade barriers.

WAFarmers President Dale Park said the conclusion of the agreement is a generally positive outcome for Australian farmers.

The TPP will create longer term benefits for Australian farmers, particularly in countries where we don’t have already have agreements.

Australia exported roughly $15 billion of agricultural goods to TPP countries in 2014 and this is set to increase as a result of the agreement.

The TPP is a multi-country Trade Agreement between Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Japan, the United States, Vietnam, Mexico and Canada.

An agribusiness degree offered at Muresk has been embraced by the agriculture and service industries as a means of meeting some of the unmet demand for graduates in WA and nationwide.

The highly regarded Charles Sturt University Bachelor of Agricultural Business Management is run in a partnership with C Y O'Connor Institute School of Agribusiness and based at the Muresk Institute campus near Northam. Charles Sturt is Australia's largest regional university.

Students learn through face to face classes, laboratory sessions and field work. Trips to exemplary farms and agricultural businesses support learning and foster networking with potential employers.

The degree gives students the knowledge, skills and industry experience for a growing number of careers in agribusiness.

During a recent discussion about the course, student comments included: "It is great that we get to visit and experience a range of well run farms and agricultural businesses.

Earlier this year we took a trip through Wheatbelt and Midwest visiting farms and a gypsum mine.

They get to see things like a sheep carrier being loaded at Fremantle and learn things first hand. Trips, field trials and lab sessions make it easier to understand what we learn in the classroom.

Head of the School of Agribusiness, Dr Christine Storer, said evidence of the strong support for the degree is the financial backing and offers of work placements.

Applications are now open for places in the course and for scholarships worth more than $80,000.

There are eight scholarships of $5,000 each and one of $2,500 for students commencing in 2016.

A further eight scholarships worth $38,500 are available to students in their second or third year of study.

Features that attract students include subjects timetabled in two day blocks every fortnight with materials online allowing them to study full or part time while working.

Broad industry representation on the advisory committee overseeing the degree and industry experienced lecturers ensures every subject is relevant to agriculture and agribusiness in WA.

There are a number of pathways into the program including ATAR, Principal’s Recommendation, Certificate IV and completion of single subjects.

Innovation to Reignite Agroforestry

Boyup Brook small landholders David Singe and Natalee Kuser are taking a novel approach to agroforestry. Instead of developing single species woodlots, they are planting a mix of local timbers with the long term goal of producing high value craft and furniture wood.

The approach is a natural extension of their knowledge and passion for landscape rehabilitation.

Natalee has a background in revegetation and they have done a lot of work on the property over the years. This has helped them develop an understanding of our soils, and which of our local species will grow where.

David completed a Master Tree Growers course in 2011 and the following year the couple developed their first mixed species woodlot, combining their knowledge of local species with silvicultural processes.

“I haven’t seen many people using mixed species, and certainly not mixed local natives in an agroforestry setting.”

“While some people think it’s too complex, using a mix of native species is consistent with our interest in repairing the landscape, and builds a level of robustness into the woodlot design and our product range,” he said.

The couple is now planting a second woodlot, with support under the South West Catchments Council (SWCC) Sustainable Agriculture program. The program, which aims to promote soil health across all industries, will investigate how soil health can benefit tree-growers, as project manager Peter Clifton explains.

Over the long term we might expect a benefit to soil health from woodlots.

However, during the establishment phase there could be a temporary reduction in soil condition and function due to a loss of ground cover.

This project is testing a few mitigation strategies to see how they affect plant survival and growth, and to gauge whether the strategies might be economically viable,” he said.

The project matches species to soil type and will compare how summer watering, soil wetters, mulching and planting in shallow swales can benefit growth and survival.

Mr Singe said that the project was particularly relevant in a changing climate.

“We’ve had low rainfall so far this year, so it will be particularly interesting to see the relative effect of these different establishment techniques.”

This project is supported by the South West Catchments Council, through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme.

Calendar Supports Wildlife

Locals will be able to purchase the 2016 Perth Zoo Calendar at over 250 Independent Grocers of Australia (IGA) stores across the state^ from 25 October 2015 to help Perth Zoo save wildlife.

IGA WA Retailer Council Chair and owner of SUPA IGA Denmark, Bob Cybula, said IGA supports a number of community initiatives like school and community groups but every year the staff favourite is the Perth Zoo calendar.

This is the fifth year IGA has sold the Perth Zoo Calendar and all monies go towards saving wildlife both at home and abroad. By buying the calendar this is a small way locals can actively contribute to conservation. IGA’s sponsorship contributes to Perth Zoo’s protection of regional biodiversity and efforts to improve community knowledge of the environment.

As independent retailers, own and run our supermarkets – they are part of the local community and it’s one of our priorities to reinvest back into communities are a part of. Two cents from every sale of an IGA Signature product is donated to IGA Community Chest.

Some of the money customers spend at their local IGA filters down into the community through IGA Community Chest, a program that raises funds to support local community organisations or charities.

It really is a win-win situation because by shopping at your local IGA, customers are also helping us in our commitment to keep supporting and building independent Australian brands and suppliers.

IGA strives to deliver a shopping experience that our local communities value, which is to shop locally and conveniently with great customer service, whilst supporting local suppliers and brands, offering far more benefits than just competitive prices. It pays to shop independent as highlighted by our Price Match* campaign matching the big chains.

Poem ‘Angry Dan’s Station Hand’

Now Angry Dan from ‘Stony Ridge’ With the ‘Running S’ for a brand

And a temper to match his fiery hair, Had hired a station hand

The lad came up from Centrelink In a city far to the south

He was long and thin with a pointed chin And bumfluff round his mouth

And what he knew of the northern life You could write on the head of a pin

So Dan says “Right young feller We’ll have to break yous in”

So he told him all about cattle And horses and fences and bores

And he taught him to ride and to shoot And he mentioned the ‘Out Back Laws’

But he stressed most of all and most firmly Time after time to the letter

“We don’t eat our own beef young feller ‘Cause the neighbour’s beef tastes better”

And he showed him the brand on the cattle And told him he never must shoot

At a beast with a Running S shoulder Or he’d get the sharp end of a boot

He said “You can shoot any killer But you’ll die without getting older

If I catch you just once with your rifle Aimed at a Running S shoulder”

So the lad settled in and got useful And he worked and he worked pretty hard Round the fences or out in the paddocks

Or down with the stock in the yard

Then time came round for a killer And Dan thought he’d give him a try

But he said “Now you watch where you’re aiming Unless you just aiming to die”

So the lad set out in the evening In the battered old station truck

And he never knew as he bumped along Just how far he was pushing his luck

Out near the neighbour’s far boundary He found a fine beast to one side

It was quiet and he drove all around it To check any brands on its hide

The Running S brand on the shoulder Was definitely not on this one

So he lifted his rifle and steadied And dropped the beast cold as a stone

Now Dan sits at home with a bottle Doing his best to get full

The beast had no Running S shoulder It was only his flaming stud bull

Technology lets us do things we’ve never been able to do, but it can be addictive. You can become tied to it in ways that are exhausting. One expert notes: ‘There’s a strong tendency for humans to do everything they’re able to. Combine that with constant connectivity, and the workday need never end. It’s easy to contact anyone anytime, and with information always available on line you can keep clicking forever.’

Paul writes about ‘making the most of your time.’ Ephesians 5:16 We say, ‘Time is money,’ but in actuality time is much more valuable, because it’s a non–renewable resource. Once spent, it’s gone forever.

Managing information overload means re–establishing boundaries that technology has demolished.

So: Recognise the signs: if you communicate with people all day yet you’re still lonely, chances are, technology is dominating your life. Take baby steps: make yourself unavailable for short periods and see what happens. The wheels of industry won’t grind to a halt! Remember you have a choice: people who think they should be available 24/7 exaggerate their own importance or the control others have over them. Establish boundaries: rein in the emails, instant messages and on–line feeds. Do you really need all those ‘FYI’s’ about the same thing? Give clear instructions: tell people you answer emails at designated times throughout the day, and let them know who to contact for an immediate response. Make a task list: that way if you’re interrupted you’ll get back on track faster. Stick to a schedule: constantly dipping in and out on the computer is classic self–interruption. Do a reality check: after a few minutes of surfing the web ask yourself, ‘Should I be doing this now?’ When you’re constantly multi–tasking, important things can fall between the cracks.

A lawyer who negotiated an unbelievable deal in favour of his client was asked how he did it. He replied, ‘I was the only person at the meeting that day who didn’t spend the whole time text messaging!’

A respected researcher says we’ve trained our brains ‘to constantly flit around the universe of messages and information, seeking brief hits of excitement. Grazing ceaselessly, we never dig too deeply before moving on to the next distraction and it ratchets up our stress levels in ways we’re only starting to understand.’ Another expert says: ‘We get more information in 72 hours than our parents received in a month, and most people don’t have the skills to deal with it. They let new things in, but don’t get rid of old information they wanted to act on.’

When was the last time you enjoyed some relaxed, uninterrupted down time? Can you even remember? We’re so results–oriented that unless we’re doing something that can be quantified, we think it’s a waste of time. The fact is you need time away from the unrelenting onslaught of information to regroup, reflect and recharge.

Jesus had a schedule to keep, people to minister to, disciples depending on Him, and a short time to do it all. Nevertheless, ‘He withdrew…into the wilderness, and prayed.’ Luke 5:16 Now, since ‘the servant is not greater than his lord,’ do you think you’re above all that? Are you wiser than He? Or more spiritual? Jesus said, ‘Come… apart…and rest a while’ Mark 6:31, because when you don’t come apart, you fall apart.

Golfers Support Foodbank

Nationals Member for the South West Region Colin Holt MLC has finished his 2015 Nationals WA Foodbank Golf Drive. The turn out and support was outstanding with fifteen Golf Clubs throughout the region doing their part to contribute to the three month drive reaching all corners of the South West.

In 2014, 516,000 Australians relied on food relief services each month, Foodbank is working at full capacity in order to provide these services to those in need.

“The contribution and effort made by the South West community is a priceless donation to Foodbank WA,” Mr Holt said. Their goal is to continue to make a difference and with the communities involvement we can support those in the South West who are desperately in need of the assistance that Foodbank WA provides.

Thanks to the kind donations of participants in this year’s Foodbank WA Golf Drive, 16kgs of non-perishable food was collected by the Boyup Brook Golf Club, which equates to 32 meals. The food will be distributed to South West families experiencing rough times.

Mr Holt would like to thank all those involved for their generosity and commitment to support Foodbank WA in the community.

On The Green

Social bowls started during September as the weather became a little warmer with the official Opening Day being held on Sunday 27th September with a good attendance.

Repairs to Green: The bowling season was then interrupted as major repairs were undertaken to the green which was damaged in the hailstorm in October 2014. The carpet and underlay had to be removed then the top was covered with a finely graded sand, spread and laser levelled. The underlay was then put back then the carpet re-laid and stretched to the correct tension. The green was finished on the Friday afternoon just in time for the men’s first pennants game for the season on Saturday 10th October.

Men’s Pennants: The first game for the season was held at Boyup Brook against the team from Balingup with two of the three teams having a rink win and Boyup Brook winning the aggregate to take a five points one point lead.

Ladies Pennants: The ladies first game for the season was also held in Boyup Brook and played against Bridgetown with each team having a rink win but Boyup Brook won the aggregate to go to a three points to one lead.

Social Bowls: We are now looking forward to the new season. Mixed social bowls is held most Sundays and new members are always welcome. Ladies bowls is held on Thursday afternoons.
