To determine if a tube has completelyrecovered, look for the following, especially on the back and underside ofthe tube:

1. Uniform wall thickness.2. Conformance to substrate.

Note : When installing multiple tubes, make sure that the surface of the lasttube is still warm before positioning andshrinking the next tube. If installed tubehas cooled, re-heat the entire surface.

Overheating of tubing must be avoided. This is evidenced by scorching orblistering on the surface. Any minorsurface scorching that can be removedby solvent cleaning is acceptable.Tubing with deep blistering must bereplaced.

Busbar PreparationBusbar must be free of sharp edges orburrs and thoroughly cleaned.

Lubricate bent busbars by applying athin film of silicone grease or a greasewith a melting temperature above theintended shrinking temperature.

Dow Corning 7 Release compound hasbeen used successfully. Aqua Gel II(Ideal Industries Inc. - IL) is anacceptable alternative.

Straight busbars do not need to belubricated.

Sealant:To environmentally seal, use either S-1085 or S-1251 adhesive.

Cutting Length & Technique

Care should be taken when cuttingtubings to ensure that the cut edge isclean (no jagged edges). A cutting tool(utility knife) or a guillotine with a suitablysharp blade and the facility for clampingthe tubing during cutting isrecommended. A paper cutter with acurved blade has been usedsuccessfully (one stroke only).

When measuring tubings for longlengths, about 5 - 10% extra lengthshould be added to take account oflongitudinal shrinkage .

General Shrinking Instructions• Apply outer 3-to 4- inch (75 to 100 mm) tip of the flame to heat-shrinkable material with a rapidbrushing motion.• Keep flame moving to avoidscorching.• Unless otherwise instructed, startshrinking at the beginning of the tubingworking around the busbar with asmooth brushing motion.

Recommended Raychem TorchesInstall heat-shrinkable cable accessorieswith a "clean burning" torch, i.e., apropane torch that does not depositconductive contaminants on the product.

Clean burning torches include theRaychem FH-2609, FH-2629 (usesrefillable propane cylinders) and FH-2616A1 (uses disposable cylinder).

Cleaning the CableUse an approved solvent, such as theone supplied in the P63 Cable Prep Kit,to clean the cable. Be sure to follow themanufacturer's instructions. Failure tofollow these instructions could lead toproduct failure.

Some newer solvents do not evaporatequickly and need to be removed with aclean, lint-free cloth. Failure to do socould change the volume resistivity ofthe substrate or leave a residue on thesurface.

Please follow the manufacturer'sinstructions carefully.

Safety InstructionsWarning: When installing electricalpower system accessories, failure tofollow applicable personal safetyrequirements and written installationinstructions could result in fire orexplosion and serious or fatal injuries.

To avoid risk of accidental fire orexplosion when using gas torches, always check all connections for leaksbefore igniting the torch and follow thetorch manufacturer's safety instructions.

To minimize any effect of fumesproduced during installation, alwaysprovide good ventilation of confinedwork spaces.

As Raychem has no control over fieldconditions which influence productinstallation, it is understood that theuser must take this into account andapply his own experience andexpertise when installing product.

Adjusting the TorchAdjust regulator and torch as required toprovide an overall 12- inch bushy flame. The FH-2629 will be all blue, the other

torches will have a 3- to 4-inch yellowtip. Use the yellow tip for shrinking.

If shrinking with an oven, go to Page 6, Step 7. Instructions below arefor shrinking with a torch.

3. Preheat busbar.

Note: If applying product to bent busbar, lubricate bar with thin film of approvedlubricant. Straight busbars do notrequire lubrication.

Preheat busbar with torch until it feelshot to the touch.

5. Shrink in place.

Begin shrinking at one end of the tube, working the torch with a smoothbrushing motion around the tube. Asthe tube shrinks, work torch as beforetoward the other end, continuouslymoving the torch to avoid scorching.

For straight or bent busbars only.

Go to Step 3, below.

6. Inspect installation; trim excess.

A properly installed tube will be smoothand conform to the contour of thebusbar.

Note: Cold spots (or dimpling) may bepresent if the busbar was not sufficientlypreheated. These may be eliminated byapplying more heat to the tube.

Allow the insulated busbar to cool toroom temperature before trimming endsto the required length and/or punchingholes in the tube.

Installation is complete. 1149a

2. Select Application.

Choose the application (Choice 1-3) and follow the directions given.

1148

4. Position tube.

Slide tube over busbar into correctposition. Excess wrinkles should beavoided.

Note: If installing on bent busbar, takecare not to scratch the inside of the tubeagainst the busbar end. Distributewrinkles around bend as evenly aspossible.

Note: If applying product to bent busbar, lubricate with thin film of approved lubricant.Straight busbars do not require lubrication.

7. Position tube.

Position tube on busbar. If bars are to behung, secure tubing to busbar with maskingtape. Excess wrinkles should be avoided.

Note: If installing on bent busbar, take carenot to scratch the inside of the tube againstthe busbar end. Distribute wrinkles aroundbend as evenly as possible.

Suspend or support the bars such that theunrestricted recovery of the tubing will beallowed.

9. Inspect installation, trim excess.

After shrinking, remove bars from oven andleave hanging to cool to room temperature.A properly installed tube will be smooth andconform to the contour of the busbar.

Note: Cold spots (or dimpling) may bepresent if the oven temperature was too lowor if the bars did not remain in the ovenlong enough. To prevent dents in thetubing, avoid resting bars against any hardsurface while cooling. Cold spots anddents may be eliminated by returning thebars to the oven.

Allow the insulated busbar to cool to roomtemperature before trimming ends to therequired length and/or punching holes inthe tube.

Installation is complete.

8. Place tubes in preheated oven.

Place the bars with tubing in place in aprewarmed oven with a temperature setpoint of 320-360oF(160-180oC).

Shrinking time depends on oventemperature and cross section of busbars.Average shrinking time is 10-15 minutes;shrink time lower than 5 minutes is notrecommended.
